Primary mucinous carcinoma of the skin (PMCS) is a rare cutaneous malignant neoplasm; its regional node metastasis is also rare. Currently, positron emission tomography-computed tomography (PET-CT) is known to be a useful tool to search for early metastatic lesions in various carcinomas. However, PET-CT is not always specific for head and neck lesions because of physiological uptake in the brain, palatine tonsil, salivary gland, thyroid etc. Herein we present two cases of head and neck PMCS in which metastasis was diagnosed accurately by PET-CT. In these cases, nodal uptake of fluorodeoxy-d-gl

Clinically diagnosed metastasis to the thyroid gland is exceptionally rare and may present diagnostic issues on fine needle aspiration. The most common primary sites of metastases to the thyroid are cancers of the lung, breast, skin (especially melanoma), colon, and kidney. Herein, we report a case of metastatic Merkel cell carcinoma to the thyroid presenting as a 2.1-cm solid nodule in a 50-year-old male with a previous history of Merkel cell carcinoma of the upper extremity. The aspirates were moderately to highly cellular featuring small to intermediate sized cells with scant to no cytoplas

STUDY DESIGN: This is a single case-based report.
OBJECTIVE: We report the first case of epithelioid trophoblastic tumor (ETT) presenting as primary metastasis to the spine.
SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: ETT is an extremely rare form of gestational trophoblastic neoplasm with less than 100 cases reported in the literature. A 36-year-old, postpartum woman presented with severe low back pain and was found to have a contrast-enhancing lesion in lower thoracic spine subsequently confirmed as ETT.
METHODS: The patient data, history, clinical examination findings, laboratory, and histopathology dat

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The complex and varied drainage patterns in the head and neck present a challenge in the regional control of cutaneous neoplasms. Lymph node involvement significantly diminishes survival, often warranting more aggressive treatment. Here, we review the risk factors associated with lymphatic metastasis, in the context of the evolving role of sentinel lymph node biopsy.
RECENT FINDINGS: In cutaneous head and neck melanomas, tumor thickness, age, size, mitosis, ulceration, and specific histology have been associated with lymph node metastasis (LNM). In head and neck cutaneous s

Small bowel neoplasms comprise 0.1% of all malignancies. Of these one third are duodenal, mainly primary. Secondary involvement of the duodenum by other malignancies or enlarged para aortic nodes is common but isolated duodenal secondaries arising on account of haematogenous spread is rare. Our case of duodenal obstruction due to an isolated duodenal metastasis as a result of haematogenous spread is unique in the literature.

INTRODUCTION: C-X-C chemokine receptor type 7 (CXCR7) has recently been characterised as a novel receptor for the C-X-C motif chemokine 12 (CXCL12)/stromal cell-derived factor 1-alpha. CXCR7 has been thought to play an important role in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis, angiogenesis and tumour metastasis. The present study aimed to examine the expression of CXCR7 in tissue samples of laryngeal cancer and maxillary sinus carcinoma to determine its role in the development of otorhinolaryngologic neoplasms.
METHODS: Samples of otorhinolaryngologic neoplasms were obtained from 17 patien

PURPOSE: Olfactory neuroblastoma (ONB) is a rare neuroectodermal malignant neoplasm that originates from the olfactory sensory epithelium. In reported cases involving the orbit, the primary neoplasms could invade the orbits through bone destruction or cranio-orbital communication anatomical structure. The present study reports a rare case of orbital metastatic tumor arising from an intracranial ONB in a Chinese patient, which is the first case demonstrating an uncommon route of ONB involving the orbit.
PATIENT AND METHODS: A 62-year-old man with a right orbital tumor was diagnosed as having a

Intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) is a highly malignant neoplasm prone to metastasis. Whether cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAFs) affect the metastasis of ICC is unclear. Herein, ICC patient-derived CAF lines and related cancerous cell lines were established and the effects of CAFs on the tumor progressive properties of the ICC cancerous cells were analyzed. CAFs could be classified into cancer-restraining or cancer-promoting categories based on distinct tumorigenic effects. The RNA-sequencing analyses of ICC cancerous cell lines identified polycomb group ring finger 4 (PCGF4; alias BMI1)

BACKGROUND: Ewing sarcoma is a primary bone neoplasm, which is a high grade aggressive small round blue cell tumour, and is currently recognized as a part of the Ewing family of tumours. It is the most lethal bone tumor, and is a rare malignant bone tumor accounting for 10% of all primary bone tumors, and 6% of malignant bone tumors. It has an average annual incidence of 3 per 1 million, found almost exclusively in Caucasians. It commonly occurs in long bones and pelvis but rarely involves the scapula. 85% of cases have metastasis within 2 years of diagnosis, rarely involving the meninges.

INTRODUCTION: A phyllodes tumor is a neoplasm of mixed mesenchymal and epithelial origin affecting the breast. It may pursue a benign or malignant evolution with distant metastases in the latter case. Sites most commonly affected by metastases are the lungs and bones. Simple mastectomy is the mainstay of treatment. This article presents the first described case of metastasis to the adrenal gland after sarcomatous transformation of a phyllodes tumor. A review of the literature is presented afterwards.
PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 57-year old female patient presented with a voluminous breast mass wh

We report a carcinosarcoma of the pancreas with liver metastasis combined with gastrointestinal stromal tumour (GIST) of the stomach in a 72-year-old woman who presented with right upper quadrant pain, nausea and vomiting. A radical resection including pancreaticoduodenectomy, left hepatic lobe resection and local resection of the gastric mass was performed. The tumour in the head of pancreas was found to be grossly yellow-white, and it infiltrated the common bile duct and duodenum; the mass of the liver metastasis is solitary. Pathologic examination showed two components separated from each o

BACKGROUND: The usual locations of metastatic breast neoplasms include the bones, the liver, the lung, and the brain. Breast cancer rarely metastasizes to the pancreas. However, pancreatic metastasis and primary pancreatic cancer are difficult to differentiate because of their similar clinical features and radiological characteristics.
CASE PRESENTATION: We report on a 49-year-old woman initially diagnosed with left breast ductal carcinoma in June 2008. The patient was admitted to the hospital with jaundice after 12 years. Computed tomography (CT) scan and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) rev

Epithelioid cell granulomas identical to those of systemic sarcoidosis are occasionally observed within malignant neoplasms, particularly in the lymphatics draining a primary tumor. These histologic changes have been termed sarcoid reactions and are easily confused with systemic sarcoidosis. This report describes an extremely rare case of gastric cancer accompanied by sarcoid reactions in the regional lymph nodes and liver parenchyma near a tumor metastasis. A 63-year-old woman with advanced gastric cancer was treated by subtotal gastrectomy with dissection of the regional lymph nodes and loca

Primary carcinomas of the lacrimal drainage system are rare. These malignant neoplasms typically present as noncompressible, nontender masses with low-grade dacyrocystitis and/or unilateral epiphora. Lymph node metastasis may occur late in the disease course. Complete surgical resection is the best treatment choice; extensive procedures such as orbital exenteration and maxillectomy may be necessary for complete tumor extirpation. Further adjunctive radiotherapy may improve local control. We present two cases of carcinoma of the lacrimal drainage system, including one locally controlled tumor w

Lung cancer is one of the most common neoplasms to appear leptomeningeal metastasis (LM). Contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is better diagnostic choice for LM and usually shows focal nodular or diffuse linear enhancement on the leptomeninges along the sulci and tentorium in the brain. We experienced atypical 2 cases of lung cancer in patients who showed unusual brain MRI finding of symmetrical curvilinear or band-like, nonenhancing cytotoxic edema along the surface of the brain stem. This finding is unique and different from the general findings of leptomeningeal metastasis. T

BACKGROUND The most common primary malignant neoplasm of the kidneys in adults is renal cell carcinoma (RCC), which originates inside the renal cortex and accounts for 80-85% of all primary renal neoplasms. RCCs can spread to many organs, including the liver, lungs, bones, and brain. Disease is quiescent until the late stages of disease in the vast majority of patients. CASE REPORT We report a case of 63-year-old woman who presented to her surveillance check-up after a right radical nephrectomy 8 years ago. Computed tomography of the chest, abdomen, and pelvis (CT-CAP) revealed a hypervascular

BACKGROUND: Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is an anomaly of the small intestine from which malignancy may arise. Among MD neoplasms, neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are considered the most common. However, their metastatic potential and optimal surgical therapy remain ill-defined.
METHODS: In a retrospective analysis of the National Cancer Database (2004-2015), patients with a diagnosis of MD malignancy were identified. Clinicopathologic factors were extracted and tumors arising in MD were compared. In the subgroup of patients with NET, the association between tumor factors and node involvement was
