A case of vulvar basocellular carcinoma in a 49-year-old woman is presented. The treatment of choice is local excision and the prognosis in general is excellent. The importance of taking biopsies from atypical vulvar lesions is underlined.

Rhinophyma, the end stage in the development of rosacea, is characterized by sebaceous hyperplasia, fibrosis, follicular plugging and telangiectasia. Although it is commonly considered a cosmetic problem, it can result in gross distortion of soft tissue and in airway obstruction. Previously, basal-cell carcinoma (BCC) has been reported in association with rhinophyma. We are reporting an additional case in which the patient had been delaying treatment because of the 'cosmetic nature' of this condition.

Traditionally, marking sutures have been used to orientate specimens of non-melanomatous skin cancers, and they provide an identifiable point as a reference for monitoring and further treatment. For histopathological purposes, the orientated specimen is marked with different inks, which enables measurement to the nearest lateral and deep margins, and if invaded, guides further excision. BACKGROUND: UK Cancer registries have difficulties in recording the incidence of basal cell carcinoma (BCC).
AIM: To estimate the total numbers of BCCs in the UK requiring surgical treatment.
METHODS: The histopathology records of each year from 1999 to 2010 were examined to estimate the total annual numbers of BCCs and of people with BCC in the East Norfolk and Waveney area of the UK.

Basal cell carcinoma (BCC), the most common human malignancy, accounting for 75% of all non-melanoma skin cancer, is uncommon on unexposed skin such as the perianal and genital regions. We describe a woman with BCC of the vulva treated with local resection. All margins of excision were free of disease.
