Calcifying aponeurotic fibroma is a rare soft tissue tumor that primarily occurs in children and adolescents and has a strong predilection for the distal portion of the extremities, especially the hands and feet. This report describes 22 previously unpublished cases arising in uncommon sites. Fifteen patients were male, and seven were female (age range, 2 to 43 years; median age, 9 years). The process typically presented as a painless mass and was present from 2 weeks to 11 years before resection. Sites of involvement were the back (n=8), knee region (n=5), thigh (n=3), forearm (n=3), elbow (n

Juvenile hyaline fibromatosis is a rare autosomal recessive connective tissue disease first described in 1873 by Murray. Major diagnostic criteria are multiple cutaneous tumors and gingival hypertrophy; minor criteria include contractures, osteolytic lesions and a positive family history. After a normal perinatal period at the age of 6 months our 24 year old patient developed gingival hypertrophy. During the first months of life several skin coloured nodules had been noticed on the neck and in the perianal area. At the age of 15 months, these nodules began to appear more rapidly, both spontane

Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rare acquired paraneoplastic syndrome caused by a mesenchymal tumor secreting a phosphaturic hormone called FGF23. Patients present with bone pain, fragility fractures and muscle weakness. Biochemical results show hypophosphatemia, raised serum alkaline phosphatase and reduced calcitriol. We report the case of a 44-year-old man who presented to the Emergency Departement with acute low back pain revealing extensive subchondral fractures between D2 and L5. Investigations showed partial Fanconi syndrome; nevertheless, he had profound hypophosphatemia, low 1,2

Tumor-induced osteomalacia(TIO)is a paraneoplastic syndrome caused by excessive production and secretion of fibroblast growth factor 23(FGF23)from causative tumors which induces hypophosphatemia and osteomalacia. Mesenchymal benign tumors in bone or soft tissue are the most frequent causes for TIO. The first choice treatment of TIO is complete resection of the responsible tumors. In patients whose tumors cannot be completely removed, phosphate salt and active vitamin D are usually prescribed. The effect of anti-FGF23 monoclonal antibody that inhibits the actions of FGF23 is being tested in cli

CONTEXT: Tumor-induced osteomalacia (TIO) is a rarely diagnosed disorder presenting with bone pain, fractures, muscle weakness, and moderate-to-severe hypophosphatemia resulting from fibroblast growth factor 23-mediated renal phosphate wasting. Tumors secreting fibroblast growth factor 23 are often small and difficult to find with conventional imaging.
OBJECTIVE: We studied the utility of (68)Ga-DOTA-octreotate (DOTATATE) somatostatin receptor positron emission tomography (PET)/computed tomography (CT) imaging in the diagnosis of TIO.
DESIGN AND SETTING: A multicenter case series was conduct

Synovial membranes line the diarthrodial (movable) joints, bursae, and tendon sheaths of the body. The primary function of this specialized, vascular tissue is to serve as a filter system that lubricates and nourishes the articular structures as well as serving as a shock-absorber. The synovium is affected by a variety of disorders that can be localized to a specific articulation or can be systemic in nature. These include inflammatory, infectious, degenerative, traumatic, or neoplastic categories of disease. Further, MR imaging provides an excellent non-invasive tool for the evaluation of the

A middle-aged man presented with bone pain at multiple sites due to tumour-induced osteomalacia. The underlying occult phosphaturic mesenchymal tumour was identified by octreotide scan 5 years after presentation and confirmed by computed tomography. Tumour resection resulted in normalisation of blood chemistry and bone densitometry. Clinico-radiologico-pathological correlation and ultrastructural studies of the tumour threw light on the pathogenesis and pathophysiology of this rare disease.

The study covered 119 women with systemic undifferentiated dysplasia of the connective tissue (DCT) aged 14-39 years. All the examinees had vegetative disorders, 26.1% had a neuroendocrine-metabolic form of hypothalamic syndrome (HS), 51.3%--premenopausal syndrome, 65.5%--dysmenorrhea. It was found that women with DCT and HS develop symptoms of neuroendocrine disorders at earlier age than those with HS but free of DCT. Arterial hypertension was registered in 96.8% of patients with DCT and HS, 80.3% of DCT patients with premenopausal syndrome. Central hemodynamics was different in DCT patients

OBJECTIVES: To describe the clinical presentations and discuss the guidelines for surgical management of pilomatrixoma involving the head and neck in children.
DESIGN: Retrospective study.
SETTING: A tertiary care center.
PATIENTS: Thirty-three patients, with a mean age of 4.5 years, underwent surgical treatment for pilomatrixoma (n = 38) between 1989 and 1997.
INTERVENTION: All patients were treated surgically. In 34 cases, a direct approach was used to achieve complete removal of the lesion with (n = 11) or without (n = 23) skin resection. In the remaining 4 cases, an indirect approach v

Dermatologic lesions are often associated with pulmonary disorders and vice versa. Diseases with pulmonary and cutaneous manifestations can be divided into four major categories: (a) congenital and developmental disorders with cutaneous-pulmonary manifestations (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, generalized elastolysis, yellow nail syndrome, neurofibromatosis, hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia); (b) primary dermal diseases with associated pulmonary manifestations (septic vasculitis, malignant melanoma, Kaposi sarcoma); (c) primary pulmonary diseases with associated cutaneous manifestations (tubercul

Electron microscope studies made on biopsy samples of the human vocal cord from patients suffering from chronic hoarseness revealed pathological changes in both the collagen fibrils and the elastic fibres. There was splitting and fracturing of the collagen fibrils and lacuna or cyst formation in the elastic fibres, or even the complete fibre degeneration. Further investigations must be undertaken in order to establish whether the changes observed are of a primary or secondary nature.

A second case of basaloid carcinoma arising in the midsigmoid colon is reported. By light microscopy the tumor was seen to be composed of islands of small, poorly differentiated cells separated by cellular connective tissue. Also seen were small foci of keratinized cells, Ultrastructure study confirms the largely basal character of the tumor and also shows some cells containing tonofilament bundles, representing a more squamoid differentiation. The similarity of this tumor to basaloid tumors arising in the transitional epithelium of the anal canal is discussed, and the suggestion that the tumo

Sclerosing stromal tumor is a rare, benign, sex cord stromal tumor of the ovary. We report a case of extragonadal sclerosing stromal tumor in a 45-year-old woman who presented with menstrual irregularity and vague pelvic pain. Imaging studies showed a well-defined mass between the posterior wall of the bladder and uterus, suspected of being a pedunculated leiomyoma. The histopathological and immunohistochemical study was consistent with sclerosing stromal tumor. No ovarian tissue was found on representative sectioning. This is the first case of sclerosing stromal tumor in an extragonadal locat

BACKGROUND/AIM: Metastatic spread defines the lethality of cervical cancer (CC). Connective tissue growth factor (CTGF/CCN2) regulates cell- extracellular matrix interactions but its role in CC is not well-defined. This study investigates the role of CTGF in driving CC invasive growth and its prevalence in patient tissues.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: CC spheroids (C33A, HT3) were treated with recombinant human CTGF (rhCTGF) or a function-blocking antibody (IgG CTGF). Invasive growth was assessed via 3D spheroid assay using a Celigo imaging cytometer. Cancer stem cell (CD133, CD44) and epithelial-m

Opercula of teeth delayed in eruption were examined histopathologically and immunohistochemically to determine the possible causes for tooth eruption failure. Specimens were obtained from 58 patients with non-erupted teeth by surgical removal of their gingival opercula. Among the 61 specimens, 31 (50.8%) were diagnosed as pericoronal myxofibrous hyperplasia (PMH), 8 (13.1%) as infantile ameloblastic fibromatosis (IAF), and 19 (31.2%) as odontomas. Histopathologically, PMH is characterized by hyperplasia of odontogenic mesenchymal tissues with a myxoid appearance in which odontogenic epithelial
