A surgical technique for removal of the adductor muscle group invaded by primary soft tissue sarcoma is described. A review of the clinical histories of 14 patients showed that the major complication of this procedure was prolonged suction catheter drainage of lymph, followed by sepsis along the drain tracts. No rationale for removal of the inguinal lymphatics in the absence of direct involvement by tumor or palpable lymphatic metastasis was found in the literature. We conclude that in primary soft tissue sarcoma of the adductor muscle group, clinically uninvolved superficial inguinal lymphati

Deep benign fibrous histiocytoma (FH) is an uncommon and poorly recognized tumor that arises in subcutaneous or deep soft tissue. Deep benign FH of the trachea is even more rare. Deep benign FH recurs in approximately 20% of cases, so surgical resection is the recommended treatment for FH. However, some patients are afraid of the trauma and potential complications from the resection of tracheal tumors, so they do not accept surgical resection. With the development of interventional pulmonology, bronchoscopic intervention plays a key role in the treatment of benign tracheal tumors. Novel tools

Forty-six patients with primary soft tissue sarcomas underwent computed tomographic evaluation. Among 21 patients with retroperitoneal sarcomas, computed tomography was misleading in three patients and accurate and helpful in 18 patients. It was also useful in detecting recurrence by follow-up scanning and determining response to chemotherapy. Among 16 patients with tumors of the extremity, computed tomography demonstrated clinically helpful findings in only two patients and was misleading in two others. Computed tomographic scans were helpful and accurate in evaluating six sarcomas involving

A group of 21 adults patients with soft tissues sarcomas of the extremities were studied by CT. CT was a diagnostic procedure in only one case. However it has always permitted a precise local work-up particularly in demonstrating the vasculo-nervous connections of the lesions. The place of CT with regard to the other radiological procedures is discussed. by its contribution to the locoregional and general pretherapeutic work-up and to a better determination of radiotherapeutical dosimetry, CT appears to have an up standing place in the staging and the follow-up of soft tissues sarcomas.

INTRODUCTION: Desmoid fibromatosis (DF) is a rare, fibrous neoplasm arising from the musculoaponeurotic structures. It is also named aggressive fibromatosis owing to its rapid progression in spite of the nature. In this case report we want to highlight the unusual site of presentation, the age group, the surgical challenges, behavior of the tumor, and the various treatment methods. Owing to the rarity of diagnosis and unusual sites in our cases, they can be missed which eventually causes significant morbidity.
CASE REPORT: We present two cases of gradually progressing soft tissue tumors posin

Lipoblastoma-like tumor of the vulva was first described as a benign mesenchymal neoplasm of adipocytic differentiation having features of lipoblastoma, myxoid liposarcoma, and spindle cell lipoma. Prior studies of lipoblastoma-like tumor have evaluated PLAG1, HMGA2, and RB1 immunohistochemistry and DDIT3 rearrangement status, with results supporting its distinction from lipoblastoma and myxoid liposarcoma. However, absent RB1 expression was reported in a majority of tested cases, suggesting that lipoblastoma-like tumor may have underlying 13q alterations and be related to RB1-deleted soft tis

PURPOSE: Adiposis dolorosa (Dercum's disease) is a condition of benign, painful subcutaneous lipomatous lesions associated with weakness, endocrine and lipid abnormalities, and mental disturbances. There is little information documenting the cross-sectional imaging findings that differentiate it from lipomatous and neoplastic soft tissue masses, or massive localized lymphedema. The purpose of this study was to provide a radiological case series of adiposis dolorosa.
METHODS: A 10-year retrospective review of the picture archiving and communications system was performed. Two musculoskeletal ra

OBJECTIVE: To study the clinicopathologic and immunohistochemical features of solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) and its biologic behaviour.
METHODS: Clinicopathologic data of 26 cases were collected and analyzed. Among them, immunohistochemical staining (Envision method) for CD34, vimentin, CD99, bcl-2, S-100, SMA, HBME-1, EMA and Ki67 were performed in 23 cases.
RESULTS: The 17 male and 9 female patients were between 15 and 66 years of age (mean, 44). Their SFTs were located in nose and nasopharynx, cranial cavity, soft tissue, mediastinum, and parietal and visceral pleura. The main clinical man

The natural history of malignant fibrous histiocytomas in children has not been well delineated. During a 6-year period, we have treated six patients less than 18 years of age. The sites of origin included the retroperitoneum in 2 patients, neck in 2 patients, and extremities in 2 patients. Surgical treatment consisted of wide local excision in 5 patients and amputation in 12; radiation and/or chemotherapy were administered to 2 patients following resection of all tumor. All children remain free of local recurrence or distant metastases with a median follow-up in excess of 4 years. These data

Misinterpretation of positive staining of antibodies to desmin, smooth muscle actin, and muscle actin as representing smooth muscle differentiation in the context of a spindle cell tumor is not uncommon. Anti-h-caldesmon is a promising novel immunohistochemical reagent for more specific smooth muscle differentiation. We studied 72 tumors (11 leiomyosarcomas, 26 malignant fibrous histiocytomas [MFHs], 11 fibromatoses, 11 cellular cutaneous fibrous histiocytomas [CCFHs], 5 malignant peripheral nerve sheath tumors, 4 synovial sarcomas, and 4 cases of nodular fasciitis), the reactive myofibroblast

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATLL) is an aggressive mature T-cell neoplasm caused by infection with the Human T-cell Lymphotropic Virus Type 1 (HTLV-1). Cardiac involvement in patients with ATLL is infrequent, and when it happens it is usually seen in aggressive ATLL subtypes. However, ATLL presenting as isolated cardiac valve involvement is extremely rare. To date, only three histologically proven cases of ATLL with isolated cardiac valve involvement have been reported. Herein, we describe a 61-year-old Peruvian man who presented heart failure symptoms secondary to progressive cardiac valv

We report the second series of a new entity called "massive localized lymphedema in morbidly obese patients" (MLL), recently described in medical literature. Our 6 cases present additional locations as well as an association with hypothyroidism. Huge masses, of longstanding duration ranging from 9 months to 8 years, afflicted the thigh, popliteal fossa, scrotum, suprapubic and inguinal region, and abdomen of morbidly obese adults. Although clinical impressions were generally of a benign process, including lipoma and recurrent cellulitis, the possibility of a malignant neoplasm could not be eli

Increasing numbers of solitary fibrous tumors (SFTs) in the meninges have been reported since this entity was first recognized. While most cases previously reported were considered to be benign, the malignant potential of extrathoracic SFTs has not been excluded. The authors report a rare case of a meningeal SFT with malignant behavior occurring in a Japanese female patient, initially resected when she was 44 years old and recurring in the same place four times during a 26-year follow-up period. A metastatic tumor to the right lung arose 25 years after the resection of the first meningeal tumo

Liposarcomas involving the kidney are rare, with most appearing as secondary involvement from large pararenal liposarcomas. A 77-year-old male patient presented with acute flank pain. CT scans demonstrated a large, thick-walled cystic lesion with rim calcifications "arising from the right inferior kidney." MRI revealed a 16.3 cm complex cystic mass with a pushing border against the uninvolved right lower renal pole. A primary cystic renal cell neoplasm was favored based on radiological findings. The patient underwent a right radical nephrectomy and adrenalectomy. Gross examination revealed a 1

BACKGROUND: Mesothelioma is a rare and aggressive malignant neoplasm arising from mesothelial cells, which occasionally manifests recurrent fusions. EWSR1/FUS-CREB, YY1, MAP3K8, NR4A3, and ALK-rearranged proliferations have been reported in limited series with no clear histological or clinical correlations, limiting clinicians' ability to assess prognosis and integrate these new entities into therapeutic decisions. The aim of this study was to better characterize these rearranged proliferations histologically, molecularly, and clinically.
METHODS: Clinical, pathological, and comprehensive tra

Striated duct adenoma (SDA) is a rare salivary gland neoplasm defined by histologic similarity to normal striated ducts. However, doubt persists about whether SDA represents a genuine entity distinct from canalicular adenoma and if a malignant counterpart exists. This study aims to evaluate the molecular underpinnings of SDA to clarify its pathogenesis and classification. We identified 10 SDA and 2 tumors called low-grade adenocarcinoma not otherwise specified that were retrospectively recognized to resemble SDA. All cases showed recurrent histologic features including (1) discrete monophasic

PURPOSE: Solitary fibrous tumor (SFT) of the pleura is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm arising from mesenchymal cells in the areolar tissue subjacent to the mesothelial-lined pleura and accounting for less than 5% of primary pleural tumors. SFTs are generally benign and asymptomatic, with 10-year survival rates of up to 98%. Unfortunately, approximately 10% have malignant potential, leading to local recurrence after radical surgery and/or metastatic spread. Of note, giant pleural SFT, which consists of a tumor occupying at least 40% of the affected hemithorax, is even less common with only anecdot

Serial sections of the conus medullaris and the filum terminale of 23 randomly selected human spinal cords were studied by light and electron microscopy, and following immunoperoxidase staining for glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), vimentin, neuron-specific enolase (NSE), amyloid beta protein, and S-100 protein. The intradural portion of the filum contains bundles of GFAP-positive glial fibers, scattered silver- and NSE-positive neurons, segments of peripheral nerve, blood vessels, fibrous connective tissue, and fat. Glial cell clusters varying from five to 100 cell layers thick at times

Localized fibrous tumors of the pleura are rare. They are often asymptomatic and may have symptoms based on size, bronchial invasion, or hormone production, or a combination of these. Complete resection offers the best chance of cure. However, recurrence is reported in a significant number of patients and can often be treated by repeated resection, albeit with increasing difficulty. We present a case in which delayed recurrence occurred after excision of such a tumor. This required a chest-wall resection and reconstruction after which a second recurrence occurred. Further thoracotomy including
