The effects of atracurium on bispectral index (BIS) values in dogs anaesthetized with isoflurane.

Balanced anaesthesia techniques employ specific drugs in addition to general anaesthetics. The potential effect of some of these drugs on the bispectral index (BIS) remains unclear. BIS seems to be unaffected by the administration of neuromuscular blockers while opioids may block nociceptive-induced BIS increases in anaesthetized humans. In this study, the effect of a single dose of atracurium on BIS values was assessed in dogs premedicated with morphine and anaesthetized with isoflurane (1 MAC). Fifteen female dogs undergoing elective ovariohysterectomy were employed. BIS values were recorded

Tactile evaluation of the response to double burst stimulation decreases, but does not eliminate, the problem of postoperative residual paralysis.

BACKGROUND: Routine perioperative monitoring with accelero-myography might prevent residual block, whereas routine tactile evaluation of the response to train-of-four (TOF) nerve stimulation does not. The purpose of this prospective, randomised and blinded study was to evaluate the effect of manual evaluation of the response to double burst stimulation (DBS3.3) upon the incidence of residual block. METHODS: Sixty adult patients scheduled for elective abdominal surgery were included in the study. Pancuronium 0.08 to 0.1 mg kg-1 was given for relaxation and tracheal intubation. For maintenance

Upper Limb Fatigue Information Variation Analysis Based on Parallel Brain and Muscle Functional Networks.

PURPOSE: Muscle fatigue is accompanied by coordinated changes in both neuromuscular activation and cortical activity. Traditional fatigue assessment methods based on single physiological signals often fail to capture system-level reorganization of the brain-muscle control network. This study aims to characterize upper limb muscle fatigue by analyzing parallel functional networks derived from surface electromyography (sEMG) and electroencephalography (EEG) signals. METHODS: Sixteen healthy participants performed sustained isometric elbow flexion tasks under non-fatigued and fatigued conditions

Muscle imaging in facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy research: A scoping review and expert recommendations.

Clinical trial readiness is an important topic in the field of facioscapulohumeral muscular dystrophy (FSHD). As FSHD is a slowly progressive and clinically heterogeneous disease, imaging biomarkers have been proposed to complement clinical outcome measures. Muscle magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), ultrasound and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) have been used to measure disease severity, activity and progression. We conducted a scoping review of the literature on these imaging modalities to assess gaps in knowledge and subsequently collaborated with a panel of neuromuscular imaging exp

Transcranial Motor Evoked Potential Monitoring in a Patient With a Deep Brain Stimulator: A Case Report.

A major complication of surgical scoliosis correction is permanent injury of the spinal cord. Intraoperative neuromonitoring continually evaluates spinal cord function through monitoring sensory and corticospinal motor tracts. There is no literature or manufacturer recommendation on whether transcranial motor evoked potential (tcMEP) monitoring can be performed safely in the presence of a deep brain stimulator (DBS) system. A 17-year-old adolescent boy with severe neuromuscular scoliosis presented for a posterior spinal fusion. The patient suffered from generalized dystonia treated with a DBS

Anaesthesia management of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.

Anterior Cervical Discectomy and Fusion (ACDF) is a common surgical procedure with positive outcomes, but it is not without potentially serious complications for the patient. We present the case of a patient who underwent ACDF and was found to have a cervical swelling prior to extubation. After a joint evaluation with the otolaryngology team, a suspicion of laryngeal structure dislocation was raised. A manual repositioning was performed prior to neuromuscular relaxation, and the patient was transferred intubated to the Recovery Unit due to a high risk of upper airway obstruction secondary to e

Bioengineering Innovations for Personalized Care in Low Back Pain: From Sensors to Smart Therapeutics.

Low back pain (LBP) remains one of the most prevalent and disabling musculoskeletal conditions worldwide, shaped by interacting mechanical, neurophysiological, inflammatory, vascular, and behavioral factors. Conventional care often relies on generalized exercise programs and episodic, predominantly subjective assessment, which can underrepresent inter-individual heterogeneity and longitudinal change. Recent bioengineering advances enable continuous, multimodal monitoring of objective correlates of function-neuromuscular activation and coordination (sEMG/polyEMG), movement patterns and activity

Noninvasive longitudinal assessment of early-stage Duchenne muscular dystrophy: In vivo diaphragm imaging in mdx mice.

Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is characterized by progressive muscle degeneration, with respiratory muscle weakness significantly impacting patient outcomes. Early detection of disease progression is critical for evaluating treatment strategies. This study investigates the feasibility of ultrasound shear wave elasticity imaging (US-SWEI) for assessing early-stage respiratory muscle changes in mdx mice, a model for DMD, aged 3 to 6 months. Longitudinal in vivo imaging evaluated the diaphragm's viscoelastic properties, with group and phase velocities measured to capture biomechanical changes

Iatrogenic Botulism Following Unregulated Cosmetic Botulinum Toxin Injection.

We report the case of a 35-year-old woman who developed progressive neuromuscular weakness, bulbar symptoms, and dysphagia following administration of unlicensed cosmetic botulinum toxin at home by a non-medical acquaintance. Her husband, who received injections from the same vial, was admitted to intensive care and required intubation. Our patient required close airway monitoring, antitoxin therapy, immunoglobulins, and multidisciplinary support, but did not require ventilatory support. She gradually improved and was discharged with ongoing outpatient neurology and speech therapy follow-up. T
