IMP dehydrogenase rod/ring structures in acral melanomas.

Acral lentiginous melanoma (ALM) is a rare subtype of melanoma with aggressive behavior. IMPDH enzyme, involved in de novo GTP biosynthesis, has been reported to assemble into large filamentary structures called rods/rings (RR) or cytoophidium (cellular snakes). RR assembly induces a hyperactive state in IMPDH, usually to supply a high demand for GTP nucleotides, such as in highly proliferative cells. We investigate whether aggressive melanoma tumor cells present IMPDH-based RR structures. Forty-five ALM paraffin-embedded tissue samples and 59 melanocytic nevi were probed with anti-IMPDH2 anti

Giant congenital melanocytic nevi.

Giant congenital melanocytic nevi (GCMN) are melanocytic lesions secondary to the abnormal migration of melanoblasts during the embryogenesis, affecting approximately one in 20,000 live births. They are usually present since birth and are distinguished by changing their morphological characteristics within time, and increasing their size parallel to the growth of the child, reaching a diameter ≥ 20 cm in adulthood. The importance of the GCMN lies in the complications associated to them; mainly the development of melanoma or neurocutaneous melanosis, in addition to the psychological or social i

[Nail unit blue melanocyte nevi: 2 case reports].

INTRODUCTION: Nail unit blue nevus is a rare and benign melanocyte proliferation of the nail unit matrix. OBSERVATIONS: We report two cases of nail matrix blue nevi with a blue-black spot of the lunular area associated in the first case with a longitudinal nail groove. COMMENTS: The analysis of our cases and of the previously reported cases give us the opportunity to describe different clinical and histological presentations.

Eruptive large melanocytic nevus in a patient with hereditary epidermolysis bullosa simplex.

Hereditary epidermolysis bullosa (HEB) is a group of genetically determined mechanobullous disorders characterized by blister formation following minor trauma. Unusual melanocytic lesions may be a rare feature of all major categories of HEB. We report a large melanocytic nevus, clinically simulating malignant melanoma, which developed at a site of healing blisters in an 8-year-old male with recessive generalized epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS). Histological findings were consistent with a compound nevus. This is the third reported case of an eruptive melanocytic nevus developing in EBS. Du

Melanocytic lesions of the palm and sole.

Pigmented lesions of palmar and plantar skin may cause diagnostic problems, partly because they are infrequently excised and also because some features of benign lesions in these sites may raise the suspicion of melanoma if considered alone. We have examined a series of benign melanocytic lesions and compared them with melanomas from these sites. The presence of severe melanocytic atypia was the most valuable feature in distinguishing between naevi and melanomas. Pagetoid infiltration of the epidermis by single atypical cells, or small groups of cells with abundant pale cytoplasm was seen only

Naevoid hypertrichosis--report of a patient with multiple lesions.

Naevoid hypertrichosis is an unusual congenital disorder consisting of a solitary circumscribed area of terminal hair growth which is not associated with any other systemic abnormalities. We describe a patient with multiple areas of circumscribed naevoid hypertrichosis on the trunk and limbs who also had lipodystrophy at some affected sites.

[Combined use of the dermatome and high-speed fraise in the treatment of a generalized verrucous nevus (Jadassohn)].

Since her birth, a 24-year-old woman had suffered from an extensive epidermal verrucous nevus on her left trunk. Because of its severe disfigurement and resulting negative psychosocial impact, the nevus was first removed in 1980 by means of a high-speed fraise; the cosmetic results, however, were not altogether satisfactory. Excision was attempted again in 1983 using both dermatome and high-speed fraise; this time, the cosmetic outcome was excellent.

Large acquired nevocytic nevi induced by the Koebner phenomenon.

A patient with characteristic clinical, histopathological, ultrastructural and family history of epidermolysis bullosa simplex (EBS) developed large acquired nevocytic nevi at the sites of some healing blisters. An isomorphic reaction may have initiated the development of these nevi. Such large acquired nevi should be considered in the differential diagnosis of large and giant congenital nevi which have the potential to evolve into malignant melanoma.

Surgical decision criteria: Bednar tumour of the foot in a child.

An 8-year-old boy was admitted for excision of a putative 'blue nevus' on the left foot. Histological examination and immunohistochemistry revealed a Bednar tumour, the pigmented variant of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans. Surgical options considered by a multidisciplinary team included wide local excision, Mohs micrographic surgery or a staged excision with examination of several histological sections. The third alternative procedure was chosen after consideration of tumour and patient factors to achieve the best possible clinical, cosmetic and functional outcome. After the final surgical pro

Basal cell nevus syndrome showing several histologic types of Basal cell carcinoma.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Basal cell nevus syndrome (BCNS), or Gorlin Syndrome, is an autosomal dominant disorder, characterized by multiple developmental abnormalities and associated with germline mutations in the PTCH gene. Patients show multiple and early onset basal cell carcinomas (BCCs) in skin, odontogeniccysts in the jaw, pits on palms and soles, medulloblastoma, hypertelorism, and calcification of the falx cerebri. Clinical features of BCCs in these patients are indistinguishable from ordinary BCCs. However, some patients show variable histologic findings in subtypes of BCCs, and only one case associated with

Ultrasound biomicroscopy of eyelid eccrine hidrocystoma.

CASE REPORT: A 58-year-old white female noted a lesion on her left lower eyelid, present for 3 months. Examination disclosed a dark-blue, subepithelial, smooth mass along the cilia near the punctum. The lesion did not transmit light and was thought to be a solid mass, such as a deep-blue nevus or melanoma versus a cystic mass with internal debris. Ultrasound biomicroscopy showed a fairly circumscribed echolucent mass measuring 3.2 x 3.5 mm suggestive of a cyst with numerous internal echo impedances. Following resection, histopathologic evaluation disclosed a cyst lined by a dual layer of eccri
