Short-term thermal stratification induces hypoxia-related nutrient pulses which reshapes cyanobacterial dynamics in a shallow lake.

The reduction of external nutrient loading is a common target to address lake eutrophication, however internal nutrient dynamics can significantly delay recovery. In shallow systems, the role of episodic thermal stratification in nutrient dynamics and phytoplankton bloom ecology is often overlooked. We studied 45 years of data from the polymictic Lake Müggelsee, where short-lived stratification events strongly altered oxygen conditions, triggered pulses of soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) and dissolved inorganic nitrogen (DIN) and had consequences for cyanobacterial community dynamics. The DI

Introducing silica-solubilizing and plant growth-promoting bacteria from sugarcane as inducers of drought stress tolerance.

Today’s sugarcane cultivation is faced with abiotic stresses including drought, salinity, heat and water limitation leading to, its reduced … ulfur oxidation; protease and cellulose production; auxin, hydrogen cyanide, and ammonia synthesis; nitrogen fixation; tolerance to heat, salinity (10%), drought, and pH stresses. The identified genera are part of the core sugarcane microbiome, and this is for the first time that these species have been documented as possessing growth-promoting traits for sugarcane …

Pseudomonas chlororaphis YL21 synergistically controls Fusarium crown rot of wheat by reshaping rhizosphere microbiota and reprogramming host defense metabolism.

Fusarium crown rot (FCR) poses a major threat to wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) production worldwide, with severe outbreaks occurring in the X … rain produces proteases that inhibit pathogens, as well as plant growth-promoting factors including nitrogen fixation, siderophores, hydrogen cyanide (HCN), indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), and ammonia. ITS and 16S rRNA sequencing revealed that strain YL21 substantially reshaped the rhizosphere microbiota structure and promoted the enrichment of other beneficial microor …

Freezing nitrogen ethanol composite in treating giant cell tumor of bone: a clinical series of 32 patients.

BACKGROUND: Giant cell tumor of bone (GCTB) is a benign yet locally aggressive tumor that often affects young adults around the knee. Intralesional curettage with adjuvants reduces recurrence but complications remain. Freezing nitrogen ethanol composite (FNEC), a semi-solid cryogen, has emerged as a novel adjunct with promising early results. This study evaluated the mid- to long-term outcomes of FNEC following curettage for GCTB. METHODS: A retrospective review of consecutive GCTB patients underwent intralesional curettage and FNEC cryotherapy between 2017 and 2022. A standardized three-phas

Methylocystis borbori sp.nov., a novel methanotrophic bacterium from the sludge of a freshwater lake and its metabolic properties.

A novel methanotrophic strain 9NT was isolated from the sludge of a freshwater lake. Cells were aerobic, Gram-stain-negative, non-motile ple … tion (such as biosynthesis of indoles, cytokinins, polyhydroxybutyrate, siderophore production, and nitrogen fixation). Based on the phylogenetic, phenotypic, chemotaxonomic and genomic data, we propose Methylocystis borbori sp. nov. as novel species of the genus Methylocystis. The type strain is 9NT (= VKM B-3616T = KCTC 92566T).

Carbon-degrading enzyme activities stimulated by increased nutrient availability in Arctic tundra soils.

Climate-induced warming of the Arctic tundra is expected to increase nutrient availability to soil microbes, which in turn may accelerate soil organic matter (SOM) decomposition. We increased nutrient availability via fertilization to investigate the microbial response via soil enzyme activities. Specifically, we measured potential activities of seven enzymes at four temperatures in three soil profiles (organic, organic/mineral interface, and mineral) from untreated native soils and from soils which had been fertilized with nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) since 1989 (23 years) and 2006 (six ye

Characterization of plant growth-promoting traits of bacteria isolated from larval guts of diamondback moth Plutella xylostella (lepidoptera: plutellidae).

Eight bacterial isolates from the larval guts of Diamondback moths (Plutella xylostella) were tested for their plant growth-promoting (PGP) traits and effects on early plant growth. All of the strains tested positive for nitrogen fixation and indole 3-acetic acid (IAA) and salicylic acid production but negative for hydrogen cyanide and pectinase production. In addition, five of the isolates exhibited significant levels of tricalcium phosphate and zinc oxide solubilization; six isolates were able to oxidize sulfur in growth media; and four isolates tested positive for chitinase and beta-1,3-glu…

Genome sequencing and metabolic network reconstruction of a novel sulfur-oxidizing bacterium Acidithiobacillus Ameehan.

Sulfur-oxidizing bacteria play a crucial role in various processes, including mine bioleaching, biodesulfurization, and treatment of sulfur-containing wastewater. Nevertheless, the pathway involved in sulfur oxidation is highly intricate, making it complete comprehension a formidable and protracted undertaking. The mechanisms of sulfur oxidation within the Acidithiobacillus genus, along with the process of energy production, remain areas that necessitate further research and elucidation. In this study, a novel strain of sulfur-oxidizing bacterium, Acidithiobacillus Ameehan, was isolated. Sever

3D MicroCT Imaging of Medicago sativa Root Nodules.

The symbiotic relationship between the legume Medicago sativa and the soil bacteria Sinorhizobium meliloti results in the formation of nitrogen-fixing root nodules. Traditional destructive methods, including paraffin sectioning, vibratome sectioning, and cryosectioning, have been applied to visualize how bacteria occupy the nodule, making it extremely difficult to obtain reliable three-dimensional information. These approaches are often combined with fluorescent labeling or staining, which can introduce additional stress affecting plant growth and nodule formation. MicroCT has emerged as a rel
