Reflexology in the management of encopresis and chronic constipation.

Encopresis or faecal incontinence in children is an extremely distressing condition that is usually secondary to chronic constipation/stool withholding. Traditional management with enemas may add to the child's distress. This study investigated the efficacy of treating patients with encopresis and chronic constipation with reflexology. An observational study was carried out of 50 children between three and 14 years of age who had a diagnosis of encopresis/chronic constipation. The children received six sessions of 30-minutes of reflexology to their feet. With the help of their parents they com

Abused women's concerns about safety and the therapeutic environment during psychiatric hospitalization.

The purposes of this study were to identify the concerns of women who have a history of abuse regarding safety and the inpatient environment during psychiatric hospitalization, and to identify environmental changes they would like to see. A qualitative design was used to explore the women's concerns through semi-structured interviews. Instruments measuring sexual and physical abuse were administered. Of the 20 women recruited from 3 hospitals, 18 reported a history of sexual and/or physical abuse. One investigator interviewed the participants and one acted as recorder. After each interview, a

Where there is no nurse: an observational study of large-scale mentoring of auxiliary nurses to improve quality of care during childbirth at primary health centres in India.

OBJECTIVE: Clinician scarcity in Low and Middle-Income Countries (LMIC) often results in de facto task shifting; this raises concerns about the quality of care. This study examines if a long-term mentoring programme improved the ability of auxiliary nurse-midwives (ANMs), who function as paramedical community health workers, to provide quality care during childbirth, and how they compared with staff nurses. DESIGN: Quasi-experimental post-test with matched comparison group. SETTING: Primary health centres (PHC) in the state of Bihar, India; a total of 239 PHCs surveyed and matched analysis b

Decentralized psychiatric nursing service in Ethiopia--a model for low income countries.

Mental health services in low income countries are inadequate. Health care delivery services in these countries are mainly focused on vector-borne diseases and HIV/AIDS. To make the situation worse, trained health workers are leaving developing countries for higher paying jobs elsewhere; this "brain drain" is robbing countries of their energetic and highly trained manpower. In response to this dire situation, Ethiopia started a psychiatric nursing training program where by nurses are trained and assigned to different parts of the country as mental health workers. Their activities range from pr

The Appropriate Translation of the Nurse Practitioner Will Foster Health Equity.

Background: In September 2020, Governor Gavin Newsom of California signed Assembly Bill 890 (AB 890) into law, which changed Title 16 of the Nurse Practice Act, granting California nurse practitioners (NPs) a stepwise approach to full practice authority. Written within the law, NPs are required to verbally identify themselves specifically to all Spanish-speaking patients, as enfermera(o) especializada (o). Local Problem: AB 890 requires NPs to identify themselves using inappropriate Spanish terminology. There are concerns regarding the translational accuracy of nurse practitioners under AB 890

Between hope and disillusionment: ECMO seen through the lens of nurses working in a neonatal and paediatric intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Using extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in paediatric and neonatal intensive care units (PICU/NICU) creates ethical challenges and carries a high risk for moral distress, burn out and team conflicts. AIM: The study aimed to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the underlying factors affecting moral distress when using ECMO for infants and children by examining the attitudes of ECMO nurses. METHODS: Four focus groups discussions were conducted with 21 critical care nurses working in a Swiss University Children's Hospital. Purposive sampling was adopted to identify r

Barriers to Comprehensive Sexual and Reproductive Care for LGBTQ+ Individuals in Primary Healthcare: A Mixed-Methods Study Protocol.

Background/Objectives: Members of the LGBTQ+ community often have poorer health outcomes and less access to health services than cisgender and heterosexual populations, and many healthcare professionals remain insufficiently aware of the barriers faced by these patients. Community nurses, given their skills and competencies, can help patients overcome barriers and achieve greater inclusion. The aim of this project is to identify the barriers and facilitators detected by the primary care nursing team of the Málaga-Valle del Guadalhorce Health District (MVGHD) when providing holistic care to LGB

Approaches to the application and removal of compression therapy: A literature review.

Compression therapy is used in the treatment of venous disorders, lymphoedema and burns. Adherence to compression therapy is reported to be poor, due to a number of factors, including difficulty in applying and removing the compression garments. A literature review was conducted to identify aids, equipment and other approaches to ease the application and removal of compression therapy garments. Some 12 studies were identified. Most studies focused on chronic venous insufficiency and venous ulcers. Four methods of easing compression garment application and removal were identified: (1) devices t

Factors affecting the duration of postnatal visits.

24 community midwives recorded details of 783 postnatal visits over a 2 week period. The findings provide a description of postnatal visiting practice in Lothian Region, Scotland. Analysis revealed that 10 factors were significantly associated with the duration of visits. These could be grouped as follows: time consuming procedures (physical examination of the mother or baby, PKU testing), administration-related (the number of other visits that day, the need to liaise with general practitioners or health visitors, whether the mother was already known to the midwife, the time kept waiting at th

Perceived stigma, barriers, and facilitators experienced by members of the opioid use disorder community when seeking healthcare.

INTRODUCTION: Healthcare professionals, particularly nurses, have negative attitudes towards individuals with opioid use disorder (OUD) and these attitudes can contribute to suboptimal care. The aim of this study was to identify stigma, barriers and facilitators experienced by members of the OUD community when interacting with the healthcare system. DESIGN: A qualitative exploratory design used semi-structured focus group interviews to address the study aim. METHODS: Following IRB approval, purposive sampling was used to recruit participants with a history of OUD, family caregivers of indivi

Managing and teaching intermittent catheterisation.

Intermittent catheterisation provides a safe and effective alternative to indwelling catheterisation for many patients who require bladder drainage. It can be undertaken by health professionals in a variety of clinical settings for a range of clinical indications and, more commonly, by patients themselves. This article will consider intermittent catheterisation, its indications as a bladder drainage technique and considerations for community nurses when teaching the technique.

Social justice issues related to uneven distribution of resources.

This article examines the social justice issues resulting from the uneven distribution of resources. In this article, justice theories are discussed in relation to two of these issues: lack of adequate food and shelter and inequitable access to an appropriate continuum of health care. Public health nurses have the obligation to deal with the results of poverty and the uneven distribution of resources, which pose a threat to the common good in the United States and throughout the global community.

Systematic and integrative reviews: synthesising evidence for community nursing practice.

Ease of access to vast amounts of information presents significant opportunities and challenges for nurses in the community as they seek to base their practice on the best available evidence. Growing expectations around evidence-based practice have developed alongside developments in evidence synthesis, which adopts robust approaches to identifying, appraising and synthesising key evidence for clinical decision-making. The context in which evidence-based practice occurs is key, and this article discusses the skills and knowledge needed for community nurses to discern how evidence and informati
