In age-, race-, and sex-matched groups, the relative abilities of medrysone, fluorometholone, and dexamethasone phosphate to elevate intraocular pressure were compared in a masked manner. Compliance was controlled by drops being given by nursing personnel. The 18 male hospitalized volunteers received commercial preparations of one of the corticosteroids to each eye four times a day for six weeks. The relative ability of medrysone, fluorometholone, and dexamethasone phosphate to raise IOP was 1, 4, and 7.6, respectively.

The nutritional status of 121 psychiatric patients over the age of 60 years was examined on admission in a general psychiatric hospital. Before admission all patients were living independently. They were admitted directly from their homes. We found that the older psychiatric patient is evidently at risk for malnutrition. PURPOSE: The purpose was to describe African American fathers' experiences and perceptions of their role in supporting their breastfeeding partners and identify strategies to enhance this role.

Neonatal diabetes mellitus is an uncommon disorder of unknown cause that can be encountered in the first days to weeks of life. Two forms--transient and permanent--have been described. Signs and symptoms of both forms are identical with the ongoing need for insulin therapy past the neonatal period the only method to distinguish between them. This article describes the infant with transient neonatal diabetes and reviews the clinical characteristics of both the transient and permanent forms. The role of the nurse practitioner in the care and management of these infants is also addressed.

While usually occurring as an operating room emergency, malignant hyperthermia can appear postoperatively on a medical-surgical unit. If unrecognized and/or untreated, malignant hyperthermia can be fatal. Medical-surgical nurses should be skilled in identifying the pathophysiology, signs/symptoms, and treatment of malignant hyperthermia.
