In a literature search 16 clinical trials investigating 180-200 mg enteric-coated peppermint oil (PO) in irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or recurrent abdominal pain in children (1 study) with 651 patients enrolled were identified. Essential oils obtained from different populations of Viola etrusca from Italy have been analysed to verify the phenotypic discontinuity observed in a previous study. All of the essential oils contained methyl salicylate as a main constituent. However, multivariate analysis showed differences among some populations, in particular between northern and southern ones. Results suggest that this species could be undergoing a slow schizogenetic differentiation process due to its genetic isolation.

OBJECTIVE: Work in oil refineries involves the risk of minor to major accidents. National data show the impact of accidents on this industry. A study was carried out to describe accident profile and evaluate the adequacy of accident reporting system.
METHODS: Data on all accidents reported in an oil refinery in the state of Rio de Janeiro for the year 1997 were organized and analyzed. We report the case of a patient who has autoinjected himself the penis and the scrotum with a solution constituted by petroleum, vaseline, oxygenated water and ketoconazol gel. Treatment consists in the excision of the injected deposit of lipid material and antibiotic therapy with good result at 4 months. We review the existing literature related with this exceptional pathology.

Adverse cutaneous reactions to topically applied olive oil are seldom reported, and positive patch tests to it are mostly regarded as allergic. The cancer mortality experience from 1964 to 1973 of employees of the Imperial Oil Limited was examined in a cohort study. Employees in jobs which exposed them on a daily basis to crude petroleum or its products, compared with nonexposed employees, were found to have more than three times the risk of esophageal and stomach cancer and about twice the risk of lung cancer. Lymphograms of 1,000 patients were reviewed with special reference to the occurrence of hepatic oil embolism following the procedure. Oily contrast medium ("Lipiodol" ultra-fluid) was found in the liver in seven cases, five of whom had carcinoma of the cervix uteri. Hepatic oil embolism was not encountered in patients with lymphomas in this series.
