Superior reduction quality without improved outcomes: open versus closed reduction for displaced femoral neck fractures in adults under 60 years.

INTRODUCTION: The optimal reduction strategy for displaced femoral neck fractures (DFNFs) in non-elderly adults remains controversial. Although open reduction may improve radiographic alignment, its impact on outcomes remains unclear. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Adults aged < 60 years with DFNFs who were treated with internal fixation between 2017 and 2023 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients were categorized into closed and open reduction groups. Reduction quality was assessed using the Garden alignment index and the Haidukewych reduction criteria. Multivariate analyses were performed for the

Indirect reduction and percutaneous fixation versus open reduction and internal fixation for displaced intra-articular fractures of the distal radius: a randomised, controlled trial.

A total of 179 adult patients with displaced intra-articular fractures of the distal radius was randomised to receive indirect percutaneous reduction and external fixation (n = 88) or open reduction and internal fixation (n = 91). Patients were followed up for two years. During the first year the upper limb musculoskeletal function assessment score, the SF-36 bodily pain sub-scale score, the overall Jebsen score, pinch strength and grip strength improved significantly in all patients. There was no statistically significant difference in the radiological restoration of anatomical features or th

Comparison of Direct Perioperative Costs in Treatment of Unstable Distal Radial Fractures: Open Reduction and Internal Fixation Versus Closed Reduction and Percutaneous Pinning.

BACKGROUND: As the United States transitions to value-based insurance, bundled payments, and capitated models, it is paramount to understand health-care costs and resource utilization. The financial implications of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with a volar locking plate for management of unstable distal radial fractures have not been established. We aimed to elucidate cost differences between ORIF and closed reduction and percutaneous pinning (CRPP). Our hypothesis was that ORIF has greater direct perioperative costs than CRPP but that the costs equilibrate over time. METHODS:

Functional outcomes for unstable distal radial fractures treated with open reduction and internal fixation or closed reduction and percutaneous fixation. A prospective randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Despite the recent trend toward internal fixation of distal radial fractures, few randomized trials have examined whether volar plate fixation is superior to other stabilization techniques. The purpose of the present study was to compare (1) open reduction and internal fixation with use of a volar plate and early mobilization with (2) percutaneous fixation and casting or external fixation for the treatment of dorsally displaced unstable extra-articular and simple intra-articular fractures of the distal part of the radius, with a specific emphasis on early functional recovery. Displaced intra-articular fractures of distal radius: a comparative evaluation of results following closed reduction, external fixation and open reduction with internal fixation.

Fractures of the distal end of the radius are common injuries and are the commonest bony injury around the wrist. Management of these fractures has remained controversial as far as modality of treatment is concerned. In this study 90 adult cases of acute displaced intra-articular fractures of the lower end of the radius were classified according to Frykman's and AO classifications after obtaining radiographs in antero-posterior and lateral planes. These were randomly treated by one of three methods: (1) closed reduction and plaster immobilisation, (2) external fixation and (3) open reduction a

Differences in acute phase pain characteristics between patients undergoing bipolar hip arthroplasty versus open reduction internal fixation for hip fracture.

INTRODUCTION/OBJECTIVES: Patients who experience hip fractures often undergo bipolar hip arthroplasty (BHA) or open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF); however, acute postoperative pain remains a significant concern, often delaying rehabilitation and impairing recovery. This study compared acute phase pain characteristics (intensity and trajectory, and duration of analgesic use) between BHA and ORIF. Previous studies have suggested that patients undergoing ORIF may experience higher pain levels than those undergoing BHA, although most assessments have been limited to single time points, wh

Arthroscopic-assisted versus fluoroscopic-assisted open reduction and internal fixation for distal radius fracture: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, there has been an increasing trend in the use of wrist arthroscopy to facilitate the treatment of distal radius fractures using open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF). However, there is no consensus on its superiority despite some previous studies comparing these 2 surgical techniques. Hence, this study sought to conduct a systematic comparison of the effectiveness and safety of arthroscopic-assisted open reduction and internal fixation (AAORIF) and fluoroscopic-assisted open reduction and internal fixation (FAORIF) in the management of distal radius fractures

Three-Dimensional Navigation-Assisted Open Reduction and Internal Fixation of a Subcondylar and Ramus Fracture on a Maxillary Oligodontia Patient.

Treatment of condylar fractures in patients with edentulous mandibles or no-occlusion reference is particularly challenging due to the absence of important anatomical structures and landmark for occlusion analysis. In this case, a 69-year-old female maxillary oligodontia victim suffered from a traumatic accident with a right facial contusion, resulting in a right-side subcondylar and mandibular ramus fracture with right ramus height loss. In the preoperative planning, the 3-dimensionalimage of the left-side mandible was highlighted by the navigation software. A mirror image of the left-side ma
