Recent Advances in Selenophene-Based Materials for Organic Solar Cells.

Due to the low cost, light weight, semitransparency, good flexibility, and large manufacturing area of organic solar cells (OSCs), OSCs have the opportunity to become the next generation of solar cells in some specific applications. So far, the efficiency of the OSC device has been improved by more than 20%. The optical band gap between the lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) level and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) level is an important factor affecting the performance of the device. Selenophene, a derivative of aromatic pentacyclic thiophene, is easy to polarize, its LU

Use of Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) in Assessment of Diabetic Skin Wound Characteristics and Blood Flow.

Optical coherence tomography allows for various measurements of skin but the utility of the device in determining properties of normal and wounded skin in diabetic patients is unknown. This single-site, non-randomized, observational study used an optical coherence tomography device to acquire skin images at 1305 nm, creating real-time image of 17 patient's skin and wounds 1 to 2 mm under the skin surface. Vertical B-scan, en-face and 3-D images were produced to calculate surface and dermal-epidermal junction roughness, the optical attenuation coefficient, a measure of light absorption and scat

Phase Engineering of WO3 Nanoparticles Towards Efficient Photochromic Nanocomposites.

Tungsten oxide (WO3) is an attractive phase-sensitive chromogenic material whose photoinduced optical response produces reversible coloration of interest light responsive optical devices. Here, WO3 nanoparticles (NPs) are synthesized via a simple surfactant-free sol-gel precipitation route by systematically varying acid content and reaction temperature then characterized to establish a correlation among synthesis conditions, crystalline phase morphology and photochromic response. Morphological, structural and optical characterizations show that by gradually heating the precursors at 90 °C and …

Development of subgingival calculus detector utilizing optical fiber: Verification of its potential for clinical application.

The removal of subgingival deposits, especially calculus, plays a crucial role in basic periodontal therapy. However, manual detection methods affect accuracy owing to the operator's skill. To avoid this uncertainty, we have developed a calculus detection device named "Sensor probe" and evaluated its ability to detect calculus for future clinical applications. The Sensor probe consisted of a 635 nm-wavelength semiconductor laser and a 0.5 mm-diameter single-mode optical fiber. Initially, the performance of the device was evaluated using clinically obtained extracted teeth with calculus covered

Fast multi-resolution 3D printing of microfluidics: enabling 2 μm channels and ultra-compact mixers.

Microfluidic devices with ultra-fine features are critical for applications in biomedical diagnostics, chemical analysis, and lab-on-chip systems, but achieving high-resolution negative features with fast print times remains a significant challenge due to limitations in conventional 3D printing techniques. Motivated by the need for rapid fabrication of precise, compact microfluidic structures to enhance performance and miniaturization, we present an efficient multi-resolution 3D printing technique designed to fabricate microfluidic devices with exceptionally high-resolution negative features.

High accuracy transfer printing of single-mode membrane silicon photonic devices.

A transfer printing (TP) method is presented for the micro-assembly of integrated photonic devices from suspended membrane components. Ultra thin membranes with thickness of 150nm are directly printed without the use of mechanical support and adhesion layers. By using a correlation alignment scheme vertical integration of single-mode silicon waveguides is achieved with an average placement accuracy of 100±70nm. Silicon (Si) μ-ring resonators are also fabricated and show controllable optical coupling by varying the lateral absolute position to an underlying Si bus waveguide.

Sensory impairment in older adults: part 2: Vision loss.

A decline in vision occurs naturally with age; more severe impairment can result from medical conditions such as age-related macular degeneration, cataracts, glaucoma, and diabetic retinopathy. Nurses can pick up signs of visual impairment and suggest certain environmental modifications to prevent injury, such as keeping floors free of clutter and rooms well lit. Although assistive technologies such as optical devices, magnifiers, telescopes, and electronic magnification can help, some forms of impairment, such as that caused by cataracts and uncorrected refractive error, can be corrected.

MR arthrography of the hip.

Hip arthroscopy can be performed on an outpatient basis and has a shorter period of rehabilitation than is necessary after an open hip arthrotomy or reconstruction. The procedure makes possible accurate diagnosis and treatment of acetabular labral tears and loose bodies. Further advancements are necessary in optical equipment; manual and motorized equipment; and simple, reliable traction devices specific for this procedure. Refinements in patient selection and the increased availability of specific outcome data will help to define the role of hip arthroscopy in orthopedic practice.

Ultrasound Capsule Endoscopy With a Mechanically Scanning Micro-ultrasound: A Porcine Study.

Wireless capsule endoscopy has been used for the clinical examination of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract for two decades. However, most commercially available devices only utilise optical imaging to examine the GI wall surface. Using this sensing modality, pathology within the GI wall cannot be detected. Micro-ultrasound (μUS) using high-frequency (>20 MHz) ultrasound can provide a means of transmural or cross-sectional image of the GI tract. Depth of imaging is approximately 10 mm with a resolution of between 40-120 μm that is sufficient to differentiate between subsurface histologic layers o

Correlative characterization of molecular two-dimensional van der Waals material heterostructures on the nanometer scale.

In the design of nanoscale materials, hybrid van der Waals heterostructures that integrate the excitonic landscape of atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenide (TMDC) semiconductors with molecular electric dipoles offer enhanced control over light-matter interactions and charge carrier dynamics. Even minor deviations in homogeneity can profoundly affect their optoelectronic properties and, consequently, device performance, necessitating stringent quality control capable of probing structural and compositional divergences down to the nanoscale. However, the reliable characterization of su

Highly sensitive broadband photodetector based on PtSe2 photothermal effect and fiber harmonic Vernier effect.

Platinum diselenide (PtSe2), a two-dimensional material, has shown exceptional promise in photodetection applications because of its air stability, high carrier mobility, and layer-tunable bandgap. However, conventional photoconductive modes face challenges with high dark currents. To address this limitation, all-optical fiber detection technology with high sensitivity and response, has emerged as a promising approach for developing PtSe2, based devices. In this study, a high-sensitivity broadband photodetector based on PtSe2 with a cascaded Fabry-Pérot interferometer (FPI) is proposed, which

The borderland of neuromyelitis optica.

Neuromyelitis optica (NMO), also known as Devic's disease, is an emerging clinical and pathological entity originally thought to be a variant of multiple sclerosis. Characterised by episodes of demyelination confined to the optic nerve and spinal cord, the discovery in such patients of antibodies to the aquaporin-4 channel has been largely responsible for defining the phenotype to date. Recently it has become clear that there is a borderland where there are patients with optic neuritis-only and myelitis-only forms of the disease, and these may be seronegative in the early phase. We describe tw
