Physical function and quality of life after thoracoabdominal oesophageal resection. Results of a follow-up study.

BACKGROUND: The long-term functional outcome after thoracoabdominal resection has to be better evaluated. A study was performed to evaluate patients after a similar operation both in terms of physical function and health-related quality of life (HRQL). METHODS: Eighteen patients were evaluated 2 years after a thoracoabdominal resection. Respiratory function, physical performance and range of motion in shoulder, thorax and spine were recorded. HQRL was assessed by EORTC QLQ-C30 (European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30) and EORTC QLQ-OES1

Double-opponent-process mechanism underlying RF-structure of directionally specific cells of cat lateral suprasylvian visual area.

For the experiments reported in this study, recordings were obtained from 246 single units in the middle lateral suprasylvian visual area (LS) of 13 cats. 49 of these cells were subjected to detailed quantitative analysis. The receptive field (RF) organization was examined for directionally specific cells by presenting moving single spots on large moving random dot backgrounds. A cell's response to an optimal spot (in terms of size, direction, velocity) moving on a stationary background inside the excitatory RF (ERF) was compared to in-phase (same direction, same velocity) and anti-phase (oppo

Systolic anterior motion in the absence of asymmetric septal hypertrophy. A buckling phenomenon of the chordae tendineae.

Systolic anterior motion (SAM) of the mitral valve in the absence of asymmetric septal hypertrophy or concentric left ventricular hypertrophy has been reported in several conditions. In this report we describe the clinical and echocardiographic findings in 15 patients who demonstrated SAM without associated organic heart disease (group 1, 10 patients) or in association with mitral valve prolapse (group 2, five patients). Cross-sectional echocardiography revealed the etiology of SAM in both groups to be early systolic anterior angular motion ("buckling") of mitral chordal structures, rather tha

Assessing motion artifacts in T2-Weighted prostate MRI: Impact of antispasmodic agents, bladder volume, and rectal volume.

INTRODUCTION: Prostate cancer is the most frequently diagnosed male cancer in the Western world, with MRI leading role in detection. The quality of T2-weighted (T2W) sequence can be affected by motion artifacts caused by rectal peristalsis or bladder filling, potentially compromising diagnostic accuracy. Antispasmodics are commonly administered to reduce these artifacts, though their effectiveness remains unclear. This study investigates the impact of antispasmodics and bladder and rectal volumes on motion artifacts in T2W prostate MRI. METHODS: This retrospective study included patients unde

X-ray liquidography decodes complex motions in azobenzene isomerization.

Capturing ultrafast structural rearrangements of organic molecules in solution remains a central challenge, with isomerization being a key example. Yet, despite decades of studies, a detailed atomic-level structural understanding of how isomerization occurs remains elusive for most molecules. Even for azobenzene, a textbook case of trans-cis isomerization with its deceptively simple structure of two phenyl rings linked by an azo bridge, the mechanism remains contentious. Extensive experimental and theoretical studies1-33 have proposed disparate pathways, including rotation1-15, inversion16-19,

Distinct neural geometries for target position and velocity in the primate superior colliculus.

Moving targets pose a fundamental challenge for sensorimotor control: by the time a target's position is transformed into neural signals, the target has already moved. Primates compensate for this delay and accurately intercept objects by accounting for target velocity. However, the neural mechanisms by which sensorimotor structures represent target velocity remain poorly understood. Here we recorded spikes and local field potentials from the superior colliculus (SC) of male macaques viewing or directing saccades to stationary and moving targets and used time-resolved dimensionality reduction

EVALUATION OF THE DEEP INSPIRATION BREATH-HOLD TECHNIQUE TO IMPROVE DOSIMETRIC OUTCOMES IN RADIOTHERAPY FOR STAGE III NON-SMALL CELL LUNG CANCER.

BACKGROUND: Radiotherapy is a key treatment for stage III non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC), but tumor proximity to critical structures-such as the heart, esophagus, and spinal cord and respiratory motion complicates dose delivery. The Deep Inspiration Breath Hold (DIBH) technique actively controls respiratory motion, potentially improving treatment precision. METHODS: This retrospective study included 56 patients with stage III NSCLC. Each underwent two CT scans: one during free breathing (FB) and one using DIBH. Dosimetric parameters for organs at risk (OARs) were compared between FB (with

Sub-nanosecond dynamics of phospholipid membranes interacting with polymorphic amyloid fibrils observed by elastic incoherent neutron scattering.

Amyloidosis such as Alzheimer's or Parkinson's disease is characterized by deposition of amyloid fibrils in the brain or various internal organs. The onset of amyloidosis is related to the strength of cytotoxicity caused by toxic amyloid species. In addition, amyloid fibrils show a polymorphism, i.e., some types of fibrils are more cytotoxic than others. It is thus important to elucidate the molecular mechanism of cytotoxicity, which is ultimately caused by interactions between amyloid fibrils and cell membranes. In this study, modulation of molecular dynamics of phospholipid membranes induced

Correlation-Based Mutual Information Model for Analysis of Lung Cancer CT Image.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Most of the people all over the world pass away from complications related to lung cancer every single day. It is a deadly form of the disease. To improve a person's chances of survival, an early diagnosis is a necessary prerequisite. In this regard, the existing methods of tumour detection, such as CT scans, are most commonly used to recognize infected regions. Despite this, there are certain obstacles presented by CT imaging, so this paper proposes a novel model which is a correlation-based model designed for analysis of lung cancer. When registering pictures of thoracic and abdominal organs

A New Vestibular Stimulation Mode for Motion Sickness With Emphatic Analysis of Pica.

Motion sickness (MS) was frequently introduced for rodents in research work through passive motion that disturbed vestibular signals in the presence of visual and aleatory, proprioceptive inputs. Inducement of MS in this way causes conflicting signals that activate intermixed neural circuits representing multimodal stimulation. From reductionism, a lab setup to elicit rat MS via vestibular stimulation was configured in the present study for MS study in connection with dissection of the central vestibular component causally underlying MS. The individual animal was blinded to light with a custom

Detrimental effects of temephos on male fertility: An in vitro study on a mouse model.

The World Health Organization recommends temephos as a nonsystemic organophosphorus pesticide due to its low mammalian toxicity compared with other chemical compounds. Although several studies have reported that temephos may be toxic under certain conditions, little research effort has been made to evaluate its effects on mammalian fertility. Therefore, the present study was designed to evaluate the effect of temephos on sperm functions and male fertility. Initially, cauda epididymis from mouse spermatozoa was incubated with temephos (0, 0.1, 1, 10, and 100 μM). Then, sperm motility and motion

Optogenetic spatial and temporal control of cortical circuits on a columnar scale.

Many circuits in the mammalian brain are organized in a topographic or columnar manner. These circuits could be activated-in ways that reveal circuit function or restore function after disease-by an artificial stimulation system that is capable of independently driving local groups of neurons. Here we present a simple custom microscope called ProjectorScope 1 that incorporates off-the-shelf parts and a liquid crystal display (LCD) projector to stimulate surface brain regions that express channelrhodopsin-2 (ChR2). In principle, local optogenetic stimulation of the brain surface with optical pr

Fluid forces enhance the performance of an aspirant leader in self-organized living groups.

In this paper, the performance of an individual aiming at guiding a self-organized group is numerically investigated. A collective behavioural model is adopted, accounting for the mutual repulsion, attraction and orientation experienced by the individuals. Moreover, these represent a set of solid particles which are supposed to be immersed in a fictitious viscous fluid. In particular, the lattice Boltzmann and Immersed boundary methods are used to predict the fluid dynamics, whereas the effect of the hydrodynamic forces on particles is accounted for by solving the equation of the solid motion

Vestibular nucleus projections to nucleus tractus solitarius and the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve: potential substrates for vestibulo-autonomic interactions.

Autonomic effects of vestibular stimulation are important components of phenomena as diverse as acute vestibular dysfunction and motion sickness. However, the organization of neural circuits mediating these responses is poorly understood. This study presents evidence for direct vestibular nucleus projections to brain stem regions that mediate autonomic function. One group of albino rabbits received injections of Phaseolus vulgaris leucoagglutinin into the vestibular nuclei. The tracer was visualized immunocytochemically with standard techniques. Anterogradely labeled axons from the caudal medi

A Focal Chorioretinal Bartonella Lesion Analyzed by Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography.

Neovascularization may be associated with cat-scratch neuroretinitis in the absence of retinal vascular occlusion. Bartonella organisms establish an intimate relationship with the vascular endothelium, causing angioproliferative lesions, which might represent a dedicated pathogenic strategy for expanding the bacterial host cell habitat. In the eye, pathological angiogenesis caused by Bartonella has been described as peripapillary or macular choroidal neovascularization, but the presence of neovascularization within foci of chorioretinitis has never before been reported. The authors present a c

Fast-moving bacteria self-organize into active two-dimensional crystals of rotating cells.

We investigate a new form of collective dynamics displayed by Thiovulum majus, one of the fastest-swimming bacteria known. Cells spontaneously organize on a surface into a visually striking two-dimensional hexagonal lattice of rotating cells. As each constituent cell rotates its flagella, it creates a tornadolike flow that pulls neighboring cells towards and around it. As cells rotate against their neighbors, they exert forces on one another, causing the crystal to rotate and cells to reorganize. We show how these dynamics arise from hydrodynamic and steric interactions between cells. We deriv

Imaging and Quantification of the Hepatic Vasculature of Mice Using Ultrafast Doppler Ultrasound.

Non-invasive in vivo imaging of the vasculature is a powerful tool for studying disease mechanisms in rodents. To achieve high sensitivity imaging of the microvasculature using Doppler ultrasound methods, imaging modalities employing the concept of ultrafast imaging are preferred. By increasing the frame rate of the ultrasound scanner to thousands of frames per second, it becomes possible to improve the sensitivity of the blood flow down to 2 mm/s and to obtain functional information about the microcirculation in comparison to a sensitivity of around 1 cm/s in conventional Doppler modes. While

Sensory-Challenge Balance Exercises Improve Multisensory Reweighting in Fall-Prone Older Adults.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Multisensory reweighting (MSR) deficits in older adults contribute to fall risk. Sensory-challenge balance exercises may have value for addressing the MSR deficits in fall-prone older adults. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of sensory-challenge balance exercises on MSR and clinical balance measures in fall-prone older adults. METHODS: We used a quasi-experimental, repeated-measures, within-subjects design. Older adults with a history of falls underwent an 8-week baseline (control) period. This was followed by an 8-week intervention period that inclu

Topology-Driven Conformational Constraint Enables High-Temperature Organic Phosphorescence.

Achieving organic phosphorescence that remains stable at elevated temperatures is challenging because thermally activated molecular motions typically accelerate non-radiative decay of triplet excitons. Here, we report a topology-driven conformational constraint strategy to enable high-temperature organic phosphorescence. A hydrogen-bonded supramolecular framework constructed from melamine and terephthalic acid serves as a rigid scaffold that imposes topological confinement on embedded terphenyl-based emitters. Comparative studies using emitters with linear, bent, and trigonal-like geometries r
