Usage of Silver Nanoparticles in Orthodontic Appliances.

Orthodontic treatment, offering significant benefits for oral function and facial aesthetics, is in high demand among both adolescent and adult populations. Orthodontic appliances pose challenges for maintaining oral hygiene and increase the risk of dental and periodontal diseases. With advances in dental materials and the use of nanoparticles, a significant amount of research has focused on modifying orthodontic appliances with nanoparticles to reduce bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation. Silver nanoparticles are one of the most popular antibacterial materials in medical research. This ar

Artificial intelligence in revolutionizing orthodontic practice.

This analytical research paper explores the transformative impact of artificial intelligence (AI) in orthodontics, with a focus on its objectives: Identifying current applications, evaluating benefits, addressing challenges, and projecting future developments. AI, a subset of computer science designed to simulate human intelligence, has seen rapid integration into orthodontic practice. The paper examines AI technologies such as machine learning, deep learning, natural language processing, computer vision, and robotics, which are increasingly used to analyze patient data, assist with diagnosis …

Disarticulation methods in orthodontic treatment - An update.

Disarticulation methods, commonly referred to as bite raisers or bite planes, play a pivotal role in orthodontics. This review consolidates current literature on the various designs, classifications and modifications of anterior and posterior bite planes, along with their clinical indications, ideal requirements and associated complications. Special emphasis is placed on innovations that improve patient comfort, reduce dependence on compliance and minimize adverse effects such as trauma, speech interference, or undesired tooth movement. The article further highlights the significance of tailor…

[Pre-orthodontic orofacial myofunctional therapy].

Pre-orthodontic orofacial myofunctional therapy is regularly prescribed in young children to correct the function of the tongue as a causative factor of an anterior open bite. Tongue thrusting is thereby identified as a harmful habit that needs to be unlearned. However, the concept that soft tissue dysfunction is the primary cause of orthodontic abnormalities does not appear to be valid. The tongue adapts its function to the abnormal anatomy, which has arisen for other reasons. If the tongue would not do this, food and drink would be squeezed out rather than transported to the oesophagus. Teac

Evaluation of the Impact of Smoking on Orthodontic Treatment.

Smoking is a prevalent habit known for its detrimental effects on oral health and it affects not only oral health but also various organ systems. The influence of smoking on periodontal health, including gingival inflammation, bone loss and delayed wound healing, poses significant challenges during orthodontic therapy. Orthodontic treatment depends on healthy bone and periodontal remodelling. Smoking reduces blood flow and oxygen to these areas, which can slow tooth movement and complicate treatment. It also increases plaque buildup, leading to potential periodontal diseases and enamel damage.

Gingival overgrowth in fixed orthodontic therapy.

The oral mucosa can suffer a series of traumatic injuries from various causes (bacterial plaque, tartar, fillings, incorrectly adapted prosthesis). A risk factor generating periodontal diseases is represented by fixed orthodontic therapy, if the forces exerted on it are excessive. These forces cause more or less extensive injuries both on the surface and in depth. One of these lesions is gingival hypergrowth. Early injuries concern only the superficial periodontium and are represented by mild or moderate inflammation, gingival hypergrowth, which can be reversible after removing the irritating

[Orthodontic treatment for malocclusions in mixed dentition].

Early orthodontic treatment is an important means of preventing and treating dentofacial deformities during the period of growth and development. In this stage, children have great potential in growth and development, high adaptability of muscles and temporomandibular joint, and good responsiveness to orthodontic force. Therefore, orthodontic intervention and treatment in this stage can prevent and guide the normal growth and development of dentition, occlusion and maxillofacial complex. This article summarizes the commonly used orthodontic techniques and appliances in the mixed dentition, inc

Orthodontic aligners: between passion and science.

INTRODUCTION: The benefits and safety of using orthodontic aligners have been reported more by clinical experience and expert opinion than by scientific evidence. Another important aspect is that aligners are constantly evolving. It is important to obtain evidence that allows for new updates in manufacturing technology, in the development of new movement planning protocols, in the incorporation and design of attachments, and in the aid of skeletal anchorage. METHODS: Evidence retrieved from six electronic databases (CINAHL, MEDLINE, EMBASE, Psych Info, the Cochrane Library and the Joanna Brig

Orthodontic findings in adults with Trisomy 21.

OBJECTIVES: Objective of this study was to describe orthodontic findings in adults with Down's syndrome, a matter insufficiently regarded in literature. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A group of 104 adults (33.8 ± 15 years) with trisomy 21 had an orthodontic check-up in their accustomed environment. Anamnestic and dental findings completed the examination and descriptive analysis was performed using SPSS23. Relative frequencies with 95% confidence intervals were compared to the average population (SHIP-study, 2003; DMS IV, 2006). RESULTS: Among the participants 46.2% (36.3-56.2%) (SHIP 36.7%) had al

Profile of Orthodontic Use across Demographics.

OBJECTIVES: Population-based studies have focused on patients' rendering of orthodontic treatment due to their malocclusion and medical needs. However, there is a scarcity of data from national sources on the prevalence of orthodontic visits and associated patient characteristics, as well as their effect on dental health. This study evaluated the demographic differences of orthodontic patients and examined the association between orthodontics use and risk of periodontal disease and oral surgical intervention. METHODS: This study used data collected from the 2019 Medical Expenditure Panel Surv…

The Establishment of a Murine Maxillary Orthodontic Model.

Due to the lack of reproducible protocols for establishing a murine maxillary orthodontic model, we present a reliable and reproducible protocol to provide researchers with a feasible tool to analyze mechanical loading-associated bone remodeling. This study presents a detailed flowchart in addition to different types of schematic diagrams, operation photos, and videos. We performed this protocol on 11 adult wide-type C57/B6J mice and harvested samples on postoperative days 3, 8, and 14. The micro-CT and histopathological data have proven the success of tooth movements coupled with bone remodel

Periodontal phenotype modification in orthodontic patients.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to assess the feasibility of phenotype modification in orthodontic patients using combined bone and soft tissue grafting substitutes. CLINICAL CONSIDERATION: The surgical procedure was conducted on 18 patients (3 males, 15 females). Periodontal phenotype modification was conducted using demineralized freeze-dried bone allograft and a xenogeneic collagen matrix. The following parameters were recorded for each tooth at baseline and 12-month follow-up: O'Leary plaque index (PI), probing depth (PD), bleeding on probing (BOP), gingival thickness (GT), kerat

Orthodontic input in the management of hypodontia cases.

This article aims to give an overview of the part orthodontics plays in the management of hypodontia cases. Severity of hypodontia varies and some cases can be managed by orthodontics alone. The more complex cases benefit from multidisciplinary care with a combination of orthodontics and restorative treatment. This article sub-divides orthodontic involvement in hypodontia cases into three distinct phases, while providing clinical examples to highlight the management of a variety of cases ranging from simple to complex.
