Obstructive sleep apnoea syndrome is a type of sleep-disordered breathing that affects 1 to 5% of all children. Pharyngeal and palatine tons … e paid to identify the craniofacial characteristics. When necessary, children should be referred to orthodontists and/or sleep medicine specialists for adequate treatment in addition to undergoing an adenotonsillectomy.

This article presents insight into the different types of asymmetrical Class III dentofacial deformities, their diagnoses, and the treatment modalities adopted by orthodontists and maxillofacial surgeons. In diagnosing facial and dental asymmetries, a thorough clinical examination and radiographic survey are necessary to determine the extent of the soft tissue, skeletal, dental, and functional involvement. The management of three cases of asymmetrical Class III dentofacial deformities is described. The optimal esthetic results and functional outcomes in the cases outlined were achieved by vert…

Congenital heart defects are known to be associated with facial dysmorphism and other congenital anomalies. Oculo-facio-cardio-dental (OFCD) … embryopathy because of association of congenital cataract with cardiac anomalies. It is usually the orthodontists who diagnose the syndrome based on typical findings on dental panoramic radiographs. But we suspected our patient to be having OFCD syndrome based on typical facial dysmorphism, ocular and cardiac defects, and finally it was confirmed after noticing …

Using the Treil 14 points cephalometric model orthodontists can prepare a complete cranio-facial anatomic assessment at three analytic levels: the framework or envelope, the basal bone and the alveolo-dental arcade. The assessment of border-line surgical antero-posterior dysmorphosis can elucidate interesting depictions of asymmetries, their relation to other malformities, and their genesis. Asymmetry arises from over-growth of one side of the face in all three dimensions of space even if, clinically, it often appears that one dimension is predominately affected. The ortho-morphic cases of Ang…

A group of patients that was selected jointly with orthodontists consisted of 25 subjects, aged 8-16 years, having undergone operation for the cleft of primary and secondary palate, with left jaw defect. The patients had correct bites with good cure prognosis. Cancellous bone and periosteal flap taken from the wing-like portion of ilium were grafted into their jaw defects. After 1 year the alveolar process continuity was obtained in 23 patients (92%) and in the remaining ones the resorption of the graft was recorded. Reconstruction of the alveolar process was visible in radiographs, and erupti…

A patient s orthodontic history, along with the patient s medical history, forms the basis for thorough orthodontic diagnosis and treatment planning. Attention is paid to the patient s care needs, medical and genetic factors, dental history, habits, and psychosocial development. A good interviewing technique is essential to obtaining valuable information. Clinical examination includes extraoral and intraoral assessment, functional examination, radiographic examination, and model analysis, carefully considering tooth position, symmetry, occlusion, and growth. The history of cleft team care dates back to 1938. The team composition and functionality has changed over the years but maintained the focus of patient-centered care and outcomes based treatment. The American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA) established guidelines for multidisciplinary cleft care in 1993 which have been revised and updated as recently as 2022. THe ACPA sets a minimum team composition of a cleft coordinator, surgeon, orthodontist and speech-language pathologist. Access to additional specialists is also required to be considered an approved team. Cleft Teams meet at

BACKGROUND: Managing orthodontic treatment is often very difficult for the orthodontist. Many devices are used during the orthopedic phase of orthodontic treatment, always with different functions. We describe a case of orthodontic management treated with the Equilibrator O.S.A. device (equilibrator designed by Ovidi, Santi, and Aprile for Eptamed SRL; Cesena, Italy; www.eptamed.com ).
CASE PRESENTATION: A healthy 10-year-old white boy presented with a skeletal class II, division 1 malocclusion, molar class II, exhibiting an overjet of 7 mm prior to treatment. For treatment, we only used the

Radiculomegaly of a tooth is a rare condition. When it is associated with other dental abnormalities, facial dysmorphism and congenital cataracts, the condition is named as oculofaciocardiodental (OFCD) syndrome. This is an X-linked dominant trait, reported only in women, suggesting that it is lethal in males. The most consistent and pathognomic dental finding of OFCD is radiculomegaly (extremely long roots), particularly of the canines and occasionally of other teeth including premolars and incisors, which can easily be diagnosed on dental panoramic radiographs by a dentist or an orthodontist

Very few people have seen transmigrant mandibular canines and little has been presented in the literature about this rare phenomenon. In this case report, identification techniques and treatment options are presented along with the treatment results of a patient diagnosed with a transmigrant mandibular canine. This rare condition usually requires extraction of the involved tooth because orthodontic forces are seldom successful at erupting these teeth into their proper location. The treatment protocol for this patient involved a combination of orthodontic procedures, surgical extractions, gingi

The treatment of young people with implants requires advanced planning and coordination of many different specialities within dentistry. Timing and sequence of therapy will often decide the success or failure of treatment. Congenital absence of many teeth (oligodontia) associated with or without syndromes poses not only functional but also psychosocial problems for young people. A case is presented in which orthodontist, restorative dentist, and periodontist evaluated and performed the necessary therapy for a young person who at the age of 9 was diagnosed with oligodontia/l. Nine implants were

Temporary skeletal anchorage devices such as miniscrews are frequently used nowadays. Compared to miniplates, miniscrews are much less expensive and technically easier to place and remove; they are popular and can be easily placed by an orthodontist. Extra-alveolar miniscrews offer benefits compared to inter-radicular miniscrews, such as reduced risk of root damage and the lack of interference with the mesiodistal tooth movement. They are particularly useful for addressing anchorage loss issues and enabling specific tooth movements such as total arch maxillary and mandibular retraction, poster

New digital technologies have significantly improved patient treatment modalities, especially in interdisciplinary cases. Tooth morphology can be modified at different stages of orthodontic treatment. Defining and achieving the final tooth form at the beginning or during the treatment can help the orthodontist to move teeth into the correct position quickly and more easily. The reshaping of anterior teeth can be obtained using digital technologies and CAD/CAM procedures. Composite resins are preferred to ceramics because they can be modified and adjusted whenever necessary. The parameters to a

Ectopically erupting maxillary canines can cause problems that necessitate surgical, orthodontic, and restorative treatment. When a canine eruption disturbance causes resorption and requires subsequent extraction of the affected teeth, the resulting spaces are candidates for orthodontic repositioning and recontouring of the remaining teeth. To achieve successful results, the clinician must have a proper knowledge of tooth anatomy, root angulation, gingival margin position, restorative techniques, and occlusion. A collaborative effort from the pediatric dentist, orthodontist, and surgeon is req

Autotransplantation of a tooth is probably the most natural method to replace a missing or lost tooth. This treatment has been performed successfully already for more than twenty years. The prognosis of a transplanted tooth is determined by tooth type, stage of root formation at the time of transplantation, surgical technique used, and duration and way of splinting. Determining the optimal stage of root formation of the tooth is very important in planning the autotransplantation. If the transplantation is carried out successfully, the transplanted tooth behaves at its new location just like be

Elevated nasal resistance, as a result of nasal mucosal swelling and/or adenoidal hyperplasia, has been associated with an increased incidence of mouth breathing, which may lead to alterations in facial morphology. The classical approach to studying this problem clinically has been through the adoption of percentiles and various other norms. However, these techniques are only crude estimates and are subject to error. We have developed a novel approach to the assessment of nasal resistance measurements that provides the means for its differential diagnosis. Two- and three-parameter discriminant

A problem often confronting the orthodontist is that of missing upper incisors. In evaluation of the individual case, the dicision as to space closure or space regaining and eventual prosthetic reconstruction can be perplexing. Various diagnostic criteria, such as skeletal relation, arch-length analysis, inclination of teeth, and dental esthetics, must be evaluated. On the basis of this diagnostic information, treatment alternative is chosen to correct the malocclusion. The solution may be found in maintaining space, necessitating postorthodontic prosthetic replacement, or closing space and th

OBJECTIVES: The primary aim of the investigation was to survey clear aligner therapy (CAT) use among general dentists in Australia. A secondary aim was to evaluate the factors that influenced general dentists in Australia not to provide CAT.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: General dentists registered with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency were invited to participate in a structured cross-sectional electronic survey. The survey covered demographics, preferred CAT systems and practices, relevant treatment planning and retention protocols, patient-reported CAT issues, pertinent responde
