Listeria monocytogenes Ankle Osteomyelitis in a Patient with Rheumatoid Arthritis on Adalimumab: A Report and Literature Review of Listeria monocytogenes Osteomyelitis.

Localized Listeria infection predominantly occurs in the prosthetic and hip joints. We herein report a case of Listeria monocytogenes ankle osteomyelitis in a 73-year-old man receiving adalimumab who was transferred to our hospital because of suspected rheumatoid arthritis (RA) flare. He reported a four-month history of left ankle swelling. A surgical biopsy revealed L. monocytogenes osteomyelitis in the left tibia and talus bones. The patient was successfully treated with antibiotics and surgical debridement. Thus, infection due to L. monocytogenes can present as ankle osteomyelitis in immuno…

Localization of osteomyelitis lesions for operative eradication of chronic osteomyelitis of the lower extremities by bone SPECT/CT: a feasibility study.

PURPOSE: This study was performed to investigate the feasibility of bone single-photon emission tomography/computed tomography (SPECT/CT) for pre-operative planning of chronic osteomyelitis (COM) of the lower extremities by localization of osteomyelitis lesions. METHODS: From January 2016 to January 2020, we surgically treated ten adult patients with Cierny-Mader type III COM in the tibia or femur for a mean duration of 24.4 months (range 7.0-70.0 months). We conducted pre-operative planning by bone SPECT/CT and localization of osteomyelitis lesions. The treatment consisted of intra-operative…

Hyperbaric oxygen therapy and its role in the treatment of chronic osteomyelitis: a preliminary report involving refractory osteomyelitis in the foot.

Osteomyelitis, both acute and chronic, is difficult to treat and often does not respond to conventional methods of therapy. Hyperbaric oxygen can be used as an adjunctive treatment in chronic refractory osteomyelitis after all other types of therapy have proved unsuccessful or response is slow. Risk factors and cost must be considered when deciding whether to use hyperbaric oxygen in conjunction with other methods of therapy.

Tubercular osteomyelitis of mandible: Defining diagnostic criteria.

Cases of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) are being increasingly reported these days. Orofacial TB represents only 0.05-5% of total cases. Its vague and nonspecific clinical features pose a diagnostic challenge. Here, we report a series of five cases on mandibular TB and also an attempt was made to propose a diagnostic criterion for tuberculous osteomyelitis of the mandible. Positive cartridge-based nucleic acid amplification test for Mycobacterium tuberculosis, acid-fast bacilli smear test, and histopathological examination may be considered as major criteria while swelling (which gradually i…

Chronic Recurrent Multifocal Osteomyelitis - A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic recurrent multifocal osteomyelitis (CRMO) is a benign, noninfectious, self-limiting inflammatory bone disease that predominantly affects children and adolescents, characterized by multiple, recurrent osteolytic and sclerotic lesions typically involving the metaphysis of long tubular bones, clavicle, spine, and pelvic. The clavicle, particularly its medial end, is the most common and characteristic site affected. CASE REPORT: A 13-year-old boy presented with a 5-month history of acute gradually progressive, dull aching pain over the bilateral hip radiating to the thigh, k…

Disseminated rhinosporidial osteomyelitis: A rare case report.

Rhinosporidiosis is a chronic granulomatous disease caused by Rhinosporidiumseeberi , that affects mostly nasal and nasopharyngeal mucosa. Occurrence at extranasal sites such as cutaneous, subcutaneous, and bone is extremely rare. We hereby report a very rare case of disseminated rhinosporidial osteomyelitis.

Vertebral osteomyelitis secondary to Streptococcus cristatus infection.

A 66-year-old male with a history of low back pain was found to have discitis and osteomyelitis. Biopsy and PCR testing revealed Streptococcus cristatus infection. This bacteria does not typically cause disease, and only a few cases in the literature have reported it to cause infection in the bones or joints. This case illustrates that vertebral osteomyelitis with a rare causative agent, S. cristatus, is possible and can be identified with PCR. Treatment typically requires long-term antibiotics tailored to the causative agent for a minimum of 6 weeks and can sometimes include surgical manageme…
