Oxygen and redox regulation of plant thermomorphogenesis.

Plant thermomorphogenesis represents the adjustment of growth to warm ambient temperatures. The mechanism has long been organised around the transcription factor PHYTOCHROME-INTERACTING FACTOR 4 (PIF4) and the thermosensors that act upon it. Internal circadian control and external light intensity and quality have been the primary contexts that gate thermosensor-PIF signal transduction. Here, we argue that cellular oxygen and the reduction/oxidation (redox) state of the cell form additional layers that gate or calibrate thermosensing signal transduction. Current evidence points to discrete mech

Apnea and Oxygen Instability in Preterm Infants.

The fetal to neonatal transition is physiologically demanding for the preterm neonate. This transition requires rapid coordination of an immature respiratory control system with recruitment of underdeveloped lungs to initiate and achieve effective pulmonary ventilation. As a result, respiratory instability is common in preterm infants during early postnatal life with profiles of apnea and periodic breathing characterized by a sharp rise in incidence during the first postnatal weeks, followed by a gradual decline thereafter. The frequency of these events is inversely correlated with gestation a

Global oxygen distributions at the Earth's surface.

Available oxygen (O2), described by its partial pressure ( [Formula: see text] ), governs key aerobic processes like dissolution, respiration, and oxidation. It makes up a practically constant fraction of the partial pressure of dry air (pd), which declines at constant pressure (p) with rising water vapor pressure (e) according to Dalton's law (p = pd + e). Since sea level p does not increase equatorward away from temperate zones, tropical humidity-with e reaching several percent of p-suppresses both pd and [Formula: see text] by equal proportions. Oxygen's molar fraction ( [Formula: see text]
