The technique of ultrasound tomography was tested in nearly 200 patients at our institute and was compared to mammography; therefrom additional information was obtained for the differentiation of tumors, the site of which had been unfavorable to mammography. Differential diagnosis of solid tissues and cysts also is possible in this way, especially in voluminous breasts which are a difficult case for palpation examination. In 117 women with breast cancer, breast size, tumour size, suspicion of malignancy and clinical stage (Columbia Clinical Classification) were assessed clinically by palpation. Tumour size, degree of differentiation, malignancy grading (Ackerman), co-existent cystic fibroadenosis and axillary node metastases were assessed histopathologically. In a double-blind study, diclofenac sodium (Voltaren), 50 mg two or three times a day, was compared with placebo in 32 patients with pain localized to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ). Segmental aplasia of the left uterine horn in a multiparous Holstein cow was diagnosed by palpation and ultrasonography. Treatment with prostaglandin was unsuccessful in eliminating the fluid from the distended uterine horn. Segmental aplasia should be included in the list of differential diagnoses for cows with nonresponsive uterine enlargement.

Laparoscopic uterine suspension is an effective method of correcting symptomatic uterine retroversion. Eighty patients with deep dyspareunia reproduced by palpation of their retroverted uterus underwent a modified Gilliam uterine suspension under laparoscopic visualization. There were no intraoperative or postoperative complications requiring laparotomy, and symptoms were relieved in 74 patients.

Two ferrets were presented to the authors' clinic. Hemoperitoneum was diagnosed in one ferret, and an abdominal mass was palpated in the other. One ferret was euthanized and necropsied, and one ferret underwent exploratory laparotomy and liver lobectomy. In both cases, the histopathologic diagnosis was hepatic hemangiosarcoma.

We are describing two cases of neonatal antral obstruction due to the presence of an abnormal falciform ligament. Abdominal palpation revealed a cord in the right hypochondrium. In one case, a barium swallow revealed a very short extrinsic compression of the antrum. Division of the abnormally wide fibrous falciform ligament cured the babies.

The distal small-bowel loops in the pelvis do not always lend themselves to palpation of easy visualization during conventional small-bowel examinations. When this occurs, an angled view of the pelvis, such as that used to uncoil the sigmoid colon during barium-enema examinations, can separate these overlapping segments for better visualization.

Nine children have been examined for iatrogenic cryptorchidism during a four year period. Wound infection and testicular retractility appear to be factors predisposing to this complication. Routine testicular palpation for position at the completion of hernia repair and the use of orchidopexy in selected patients should aid in the prevention of this problem.
