Modified transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy with medial shift of preserved inferior turbinate and nasolacrimal duct.

Although transnasal endoscopic medial maxillectomy (TEMM) is effective for the treatment of inverted papilloma (IP) in maxillary sinus (MS), it involves resection of the inferior turbinate (IT). TEMM also involves resection of the nasolacrimal duct (ND) in many cases to gain better access. Therefore, we developed a novel procedure in which the preserved IT and ND are shifted medially for a complete resection of IP in the MS. Incision was made in the mucosa of the lateral wall along the anterior margin of the IT. After removal of the medial maxillary wall except the ND and the lateral nasal muc

[Nasal packing and packing materials chosing after ESS (with clinical analysis of 769 cases)].

Nasal packing after endoscopic sinus surgery is an important factor affecting the outcome of the operation. In order to discuss the clinical effect of no packing method and packing with different materials, we summarized our six years packing experiences of 769 cases (993 nasal cavities) undergoing ESS. The paper disclosed that if operation cavities didn't involve in middle turbinate, inferior turbinate and nasal septum, no packing method could be chosen; Otherwise, packing with different materials could be chosen, both methods could control the postoperative hemorrhage in a safe range. But in

[Unilateral opacification of the paranasal sinuses in CT or MRI: an indication of an uncommon histological finding].

BACKGROUND: Clinical and radiological differentiation between subacute or chronic sinusitis and differential pathologies such as malignoma, inverted papilloma or mycosis can be very difficult. In some cases the CT- or MRI-scan shows a unilateral opacification of the paranasal sinuses. Which histological results can be found in patients with persisting sinusitis related problems and a unilateral opacification of the paranasal sinuses in the CT- or MRI-scan? There are only a few publications on this topic. PATIENTS: In a prospective study between June 1998 and November 1999 all patients who und

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma: A rare differential diagnosis of sinonasal mass.

Sino-nasal respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartomas (REAHs) are rare entity. They are benign tumors with excellent results after complete excision. We report a case of a 57-year-old male with a history of endoscopic surgery for right nasal polyps 20 years ago. The patient presented nasal obstruction that persisted for 10 years without anosmia nor epistaxis. Nasal endoscopy found a tissular mass filling the right nasal cavity extending to the nasopharynx. CT scan and MRI demonstrated soft tissue opacification of the right maxillary sinus and the homolateral anterior ethmoid cells with exte

An Unusual Polypoid Septal Mucosal Melanoma: Overview and Diagnostic Pitfalls.

Sinonasal mucosa is an area of high melanocyte density compared to other mucosa-lined sites. Sinonasal mucosal melanomas (SNMM) most commonly arise from the nasal cavity and the paranasal sinuses. Due to their obscure anatomic location and lack of early symptomatology, SNMM are often diagnosed in an advanced stage. The majority of patients who present with symptoms complain of unilateral nasal dysfunction, such as obstruction and epistaxis. We hereby report a case of an 86-year-old female, who presented with a three-year history of progressive right-sided nasal obstruction and recurrent epista

Squamous cell carcinoma of the middle rectum: Report of a case and literature overview.

INTRODUCTION: Squamous-cell carcinoma (SCC) of the middle rectum is a rare disease with an estimated incidence of 0.1-0.25/1000 colorectal neoplasms. Literature is represented essentially by case report and short series, and only seventy-six cases of colorectal squamous carcinoma have been documented in literature. PRESENTATION OF CASE: We report the case of a SCC of the middle rectum, associated to an ureteral inverted papilloma, occurred in a patient with a past history of prostate cancer treated with prostatectomy and radiotherapy. DISCUSSION: Colorectal squamous-cell carcinoma is a rare

[The endoscopic approach to isolated sphenoid sinus disease].

UNLABELLED: We reviewed the records of 38 patients aged 16 to 76 years with isolated sphenoid sinus disease who were treated by intranasal endoscopic sphenoidotomy at our hospital during the period 1992-1997. Diagnosis was made on the basis of history rigid nasal endoscopy and computed tomography (CT) scan of the sinuses. Headache was the main symptom in 29 (76%) patients. Other complaints were rhinitis, cough, nasal obstruction and nasal bleeding. Sphenoidotomy was performed endoscopically, directly through the area of the natural ostium. Acute or chronic sinusitis was found in 57% of the pat

The nose and nasal vault.

In this article we have reviewed the anatomy of the nose and nasal vault, with emphasis on specific features that are imaged with the SSCT. Important areas of the lateral wall anatomy include the OMU and SER, areas that are key to understanding the obstructive patterns of inflammatory sinonasal disease. Lesions that result in these specific obstructive patterns include anatomic variants and other focal pathological lesions, such as polyps. Other types of sinonasal inflammatory disease include sinonasal polyposis and granulomatous and fungal disease. Congenital lesions of the nose may be unders

The case for a percutaneous approach to transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis.

Percutaneous treatment of transitional cell carcinoma of the renal pelvis in 4 patients is reported. The presenting symptom was hematuria in 2 patients, while in 2 diagnosis was made by chance at excretory urography. Endoscopic removal of the tumor was not possible in the 2 patients who underwent transurethral ureteroscopy due to the location of the lesion. Percutaneous electroresection of the tumor was performed after puncture of an inferior (3 patients) or middle (1) calix and dilation of the nephrostomy tract up to 30F. Pathological findings revealed a grade 1 papillary carcinoma in 3 patie

Combined Endoscopic and External Dacryocystectomy Surgical Approach for Rare Tumors of the Lacrimal Sac.

Lacrimal sac epithelial tumors are rare and often present with subtle symptoms. We report 2 cases managed with combined external dacryocystectomy and endoscopic endonasal resection. Case 1 involved a 59-year-old female with lacrimal sac inverted papilloma extending into the nasolacrimal duct and inferior meatus. Case 2 involved a 79-year-old male with a chronically draining medial canthal wound and progressive induration after prior cyst excision, ultimately diagnosed as lacrimal sac oncocytoma. In both cases, preoperative imaging and clinical features demonstrated nasolacrimal duct involvemen

Tissue-resident memory T cells exhibit phenotypically and functionally heterogeneous in human physiological and pathological nasal mucosa.

Pathogens commonly enter mucosal barrier tissues and tissue-resident memory T cells (TRM) are essential for preventing mucosal lesions. However, the immunological properties of TRM cells in nasal mucosa are poorly known. In comparison with control tissues, decreasing CD103+ TRM cells were observed in Chronic rhinosinusitis with nasal polyps (CRSwNPs) and sinonasal inverted papilloma (SNIP), which presented high capability to produce effector cytokines. In CRSwNPs, we found that CD103+ TRM cells with higher cytokine and Granzyme B coexpressed high PD-1, CD103- TRM cells expressed higher IL-10.

. Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma - typical but underdiagnosed pathology of nasal cavity and sinuses.

Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) is relatively new diagnosis, firstly described in WHO tumour classification in 2005. It is a benign lesion affecting nose and paranasal sinuses. Although REAH was considered a rare entity, it is recently more frequently revealed in histopathological exam in patients undergoing endoscopic surgery for nasal polyposis. There have been so far operated two patients with diagnosis of REAH in our department. Both were solitary lesions, and both were resected endoscopically. Definitive histopathological examination confirmed the finding of preoperati

Anti-inflammatory effects of polihexanide and polyethylene glycol in an in vitro study in chronic rhinosinusitis.

The majority of patients affected by chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) suffer from eosinophilic infiltration. We hypothesised that polihexanide and polyethylene glycol as an antiseptic might alter the eosinophil-associated IL-5 and eotaxin-3 expression in CRS and also the expression of MMP-9, being involved in the tissue-remodelling in CRS. After obtaining samples from 10 CRS patients with (CRSwNP) and without nasal-polyposis (CRSsNP) and 2 patients with inverted-papilloma undergoing functional endoscopic sinus surgery (FESS), the expression of interleukin-5, eotaxin-3 and MMP-9 were evaluated by a

The importance of the differential diagnosis in rhinology: respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma of the sinonasal tract.

INTRODUCTION: Respiratory epithelial adenomatoid hamartoma (REAH) is an uncommon lesion of the nasal and paranasal sinuses. It was first described in 1995 by Wenig and Heffner, and only about 60 cases have been published since then. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We present 6 case studies of nasal cavity hamartoma diagnosed and treated at our institution between 2005 and 2010. We also conducted a literature review and comprehensive study of the differential diagnosis of this condition, both clinical and pathological. RESULTS: The male-female ratio was 5:1, with a mean age of 63.1 years. The most freq

Urinary bladder lesions in bovine enzootic haematuria.

In cattle, bracken fern chronic toxicity is characterized by the presence of multiple tumours in the bladder (bovine enzootic haematuria). From October 1999 to March 2003, 433 urinary bladders with macroscopical lesions were collected in the slaughterhouse of São Miguel Island (Azores, Portugal), an endemic area where Pteridium aquilinum infestation in pastures is high. Bladder lesions were divided into three main categories (inflammatory lesions, non-neoplastic epithelial abnormalities and tumours) and described in detail. In some cases, neoplastic growth was confined to a single site, but in
