OBJECTIVE: To determine whether parathyroid hormone-related protein is synthesized and secreted by the tumor cells of patients with adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Convenience sample of three patients with adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma. Two patients developed hypercalcemia, and one patient was normocalcemic.
SETTING: Inpatient facilities at two university-affiliated medical centers.
INTERVENTION: All patients had a lymph node biopsy. In addition, samples of ascitic or pleural fluid, or both, were obtained from these patients.
MEASUREMENTS AND RESULTS: Using RNA blot a

The presence of gamma 1-MSH has been demonstrated in bovine neuro-intermediate lobe by biochemical methods, thus suggesting that this peptide is cleaved from the cryptic region of pro-opiocortin. In this study we report the localisation of gamma 1-MSH-like immunoreactivity in the adenohypophysis of man, ox, pig, dog and guinea-pig using immunocytochemical procedures at both light and electron microscope levels. Antisera recognising the C-terminal Arg-Phe-amide and the C-terminal penta-peptide-amide of gamma 1-MSH have been used throughout this study. The immunostaining was found in all endocri

Hypothalamic GHRH is secreted into the portal system, binds to specific surface receptors of the somatotroph cell and elicits intracellular signals that modulate pituitary GH synthesis and/or secretion. Moreover, GHRH is synthesized and expressed in multiple extrapituitary tissues. Excessive peripheral production of GHRH by a tumor source would therefore be expected to cause somatotroph cell hyperstimulation, increased GH secretion and eventually pituitary acromegaly. Immunoreactive GHRH is present in several tumors, including carcinoid tumors, pancreatic cell tumors, small cell lung cancers,

OBJECTIVE: To report a case of recurrent hypercalcemia due to ectopic production of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and parathyroid hormone-related protein (PTH-rP) from transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder.
METHODS: We present clinical, laboratory, and pathologic findings in a 73-year-old man with recurrent hypercalcemia. Results of serum calcium, PTH, PTH-rP and immunostaining of tumors for PTH and PTH-rP over 9 years are presented.
RESULTS: In 1990 this patient was diagnosed with primary hyperparathyroidism, which was cured by resection of a parathyroid adenoma in the neck. Hyperc

1. All available evidence for and against the concept of ectopic hyperparathyroidism, including 307 case reports of tumor hypercalcemia, was collated. 2. Of 104 combined cases of tumors of the kidney, lung, liver, head, neck and esophagus, 91 (88%) were in men. 3. The parathyroid glands were examined in 170 of 307 cases and parathyroid hyperplasia or adenoma were described in 34 cases. This high frequency may reflect higher likelihood of reporting such association. 4. Analysis of the histological pattern of tumors associated with humoral hypercalcemia revealed a marked association with certain

BACKGROUD: Breast cancer is the most common malignant tumor in women, and postoperative recurrence and metastasis significantly impact prognosis. Occult gastric metastasis with a long latency after breast cancer surgery is extremely rare. We report a case of occult gastric metastasis occurring 8 years after breast cancer surgery, emphasizing the importance of monitoring for such conditions postoperatively. A 57-year-old woman underwent a modified radical mastectomy for left breast cancer 8 years ago. Postoperative pathology confirmed invasive lobular carcinoma, followed by six cycles of chemot

BACKGROUND: Suprasellar germinomas are rare intracranial neoplasms, which mainly occur in children and adolescents and manifest with endocrine symptoms and/or compression syndromes.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: The clinical, hormonal and morphological findings as well as treatment and complications were investigated in seven patients (six male, one female) with germinomas.
RESULTS: Mean age at diagnosis was 19.7 years (range 15-32 years). First disease-related symptoms were diabetes insipidus (three patients), loss of libido (two patients), pseudopubertas praecox (one patient), and dwarfism (one pa

When messenger R.N.A. (m-R.N.A.) extracted from various hormone-secreting tumours was injected into Xenopus eggs, the translation products in all cases proved to be a protein of molecular weight 65 00. Analysis by polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis and specific precipitation reactions with antibodies showed a striking similarity between the various proteins. When translation products of m-R.N.A. from calcitonin-secreting medullary thyroid carcinoma (M.T.C( and the non-secreting anaplastic form of M.T.C. were incubating with specific enzyme systems (the microsomal fraction) from both types of t

Gestational chorionic tumors represent a rare biologic system for three reasons: They are a genetic mixture of both male and female; they are unusually responsive to chemotherapy with a high cure rate; and they always secrete hCG, which acts as a reliable cell marker with which to diagnose, to monitor drug therapy, and to follow-up to ensure continued remission. Nongestational chorionic tumors characteristically share only the latter unique attribute. For this reason, endocrine assays, particularly the measurement of hCG, play a vital role in the management of patients with these tumors. Howev

Several medical disorders rarely cause violent behavior. When they do so, it is dramatic because the violence and other bizarre behaviors are not in keeping with the premorbid picture of the individual. Often, medical and neurologic symptoms are present, but occasionally psychiatric symptoms may present alone with the aggression and violence, which points out the importance of complete medical psychiatric evaluations of patients who present with recent histories of violent behavior. Most violence involves "horses," but the rare "zebras" should be kept in mind because they are often treatable.

Several substances, referred to as tumor markers, are associated with neoplasms development. The specificity of these cancer related substances or antigens depends on their nature (onco-fetal antigens, placental antigens) or on their concentration and physico-chemical forms (hormones, exocrine products, enzymes,...). On the basis of physico-chemical, immunochemical and biochemical analogies which exist between these tumor markers and substances normally found at particular times of life, a classification of these markers may be proposed. Tumor markers are almost constantly found within carcino

A peptide secreted by tumors associated with the clinical syndrome of humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy was recently purified from human renal carcinoma cell line 786-0. The N-terminal amino acid sequence of this peptide has considerable similarity with those of parathyroid hormone (PTH) and of peptides isolated from human breast and lung carcinoma (cell line BEN). In this study we obtained the nucleotide sequence of a 1595-base cDNA complementary to mRNA encoding the PTH-like peptide produced by 786-0 cells. The cDNA contains an open reading frame encoding a leader sequence of 36 amino acid

Medullary carcinoma of the thyroid (MCT) develops from the thyroid C-cells. Thyroid C-cells and MCTs secrete calcitonin (CT), a 32 amino acid polypeptide hormone. The author has described a sensitive direct sequential radioimmunoassay of CT in human serum. The vast majority of healthy subjects had detectable values of serum immunoreactive calcitonin (iCT) and elevated levels were found in patients with MCT. Besides CT, several higher molecular weight substances contribute to CT-immunoreactivity. These substances may represent metabolic products in the processing of a glycosylated procalcitonin

Chromogranin A, the protein that is co-stored and co-released with catecholamines from the adrenal medulla, has recently been identified in a variety of human endocrine tissues, both normal and neoplastic. We investigated the secretion of chromogranin A by peptide hormone-producing human tumors in studies of patients with the following neoplastic disorders: pheochromocytoma, parathyroid adenoma, primary parathyroid hyperplasia, medullary thyroid carcinoma, thyroidal C-cell hyperplasia, carcinoid tumor, oat-cell lung carcinoma, pancreatic islet-cell tumor, and aortic-body tumor. All these patie
