Cholinergic vasoconstriction in the eye.

Data is presented to support a physiologic vasoconstrictor function of the parasympathetic nervous system in the anterior uvea of the eye. Studies in rabbits, cats and monkeys demonstrate that stimulation of the parasympathetic nerve fibers running with the oculomotor nerve to the eye induces a reduction in blood flow of the iris and in rabbits in the ciliary processes in addition. Pharmacologic blocking experiments indicate that most of this phenomenon is based on a cholinergic component. Since at least in rabbits mechanical factors such as stretching of the iridial tissue, a steeling phenome…

Diminished baseline autonomic outflow in semantic dementia relates to left-lateralized insula atrophy.

In semantic dementia (SD), asymmetric degeneration of the anterior temporal lobes is associated with loss of semantic knowledge and alterations in socioemotional behavior. There are two clinical variants of SD: semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA), which is characterized by predominant atrophy in the anterior temporal lobe and insula in the left hemisphere, and semantic behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia (sbvFTD), which is characterized by predominant atrophy in those structures in the right hemisphere. Previous studies of behavioral variant frontotemporal dementia, an

[Diseases of the autonomic nervous system. General aspect of symptomatology].

The human internal environment is regulated by the autonomic nervous system (ANS), endocrine glands and neuropeptides as well as the integrated activity of these three systems. The ANS is divided into thoraco-lumbar (sympathetic) and cranio-sacral (parasympathetic) divisions. They comprise two neurons: pre- and post-ganglionic fibers. The limbic system and hypothalamus are known to regulate the peripheral ANS through descending pathways in the brain stem and spinal cord. Cardinal semiologies of the ANS disorders are classified as follows: cardiovascular (orthostatic hypotension, a variety of s

Idiopathic orthostatic hypotension and the Shy and Drager syndrome; Physiological studies in four cases; pathological report of one case.

Five cases of idiopathic orthostatic hypotension are presented. Physiological tests were performed in four cases which demonstrated that the lesion in the sympathetic system was most probably situated in the intermediolateral columns in three cases. In one case the lesion was localized on the efferent pathway either at the preganglionic or the postganglionic level. These four patients had also evidence of parasympathetic dysfunction. In the fifth case the clinical diagnosis of Shy and Drager syndrome was confirmed by pathological examination of the nervous system which revealed intermediolater

Effects of physical activity on pupil cycle time (PCT) in healthy Indian male.

Globally, physical inactivity is an important risk factor for the development of non-communicable disease consisting of coronary artery disease, as well as, other diseases including hypertension, diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis, and certain types of cancers. Parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) activity in the eye is determined by the pupil cycle time (PCT) can be comparable with cardiac parasympathetic response and thereby determine the morbidity and mortality among individuals. The PCT is measured by throwing white light on the edge of the pupil. Pupil cycling is a feature of pupillary refle…

Frequency modulation of transmitter release.

In 1952 Fatt and Katz recorded at a frog neuromuscular junction while stimulating the nerve and found "... that successive endplate potential responses varied in a step-like manner, corresponding to units of miniature endplate potentials" (J Physiol 117, 109-128). This led them to propose that fast neuromuscular transmission is 'quantal'. Quantal release is now commonly ascribed to a vesicular form of neurosecretion since vesicles have routinely been visualized in presynaptic terminals. The vesicular hypothesis (Del Castillo and Katz, 1955) assumes that quanta, or 'transmitter packets of stand

Aminopyridazines--an alternative route to potent muscarinic agonists with no cholinergic syndrome.

In the search for central cholinergic agents which do not derive from already well-known agonists such as arecoline, pilocarpine or oxotremorine, we selected minaprine [3-(beta-morpholinoethylamino)-4-methyl-6-phenyl-pyridazine dihydrochloride] as a lead structure. Effectively, beside its antidepressive properties, minaprine shows a weak but highly selective affinity for hippocampic M1 receptors (IC50 = 17.10(-6) [3H]-pirenzepine). On the other hand minaprine has an excellent bioavailability and is well tolerated in human; particularly, minaprine does not induce any cholinergic syndrome. The s

Increase of microliths in inactive salivary glands of cat.

Secretory inactivity could be a factor in the formation of microliths, and so their occurrence in feline salivary glands after the secretory inactivity produced by parasympathectomy was investigated. Parasympathectomy was followed by a greatly increased occurrence of microliths in the submandibular salivary gland, but not in the parotid and sublingual, which may relate to residual secretory activity in these glands. This discovery suggests that secretory inactivity may indeed be a factor in the production of microliths in human salivary glands, and consequently of chronic sialadenitis and sial

Cholinergic mechanisms in physical dependence on barbiturates, ethanol and benzodiazepines.

The aim of this review is to summarize the effects of acute and chronic treatment with barbiturates, ethanol and benzodiazepines on cholinergic mechanisms in the brains of experimental animals. A single dose of each of these substances reduces the turnover of ACh in the brain. Long-term treatment has the opposite effect; complicated interactions including decreased content of ACh are induced. Barbiturates have been shown to bind stereospecifically to muscarinic and nicotinic receptors in the brain, but this has not been observed for ethanol or the benzodiazepines. The effects on the cholinergi

Gap junctions in rat sublingual gland.

Gap junctions were observed in rat sublingual gland to link serous cells to serous cells, mucous cells to mucous cells, and myoepithelial cells to myoepithelial cells. In addition to connecting homologous cells, gap junctions were present between conterminous serous and mucous cells. Since the rat sublingual gland is innervated solely by parasympathetic nerves, the presence of gap junctions between disparate secretory cell types raises the possibility that serous and mucous cells in this organ secrete simultaneously in response to parasympathetic stimulation.

Narcolepsy in a Brahman bull.

Behavioral, electrophysiologic, and pharmacologic tests were performed on a 2 1/2-year-old Brahman bull suspected of having narcolepsy. Placement on a tilt table or electroejaculation induced apparent sleep and cataplexy. Electrophysiologic recordings during the episodes revealed the low-voltage, high-frequency electroencephalogram, reduced electromyogram amplitude, and rapid eye movements in the electrooculogram associated with rapid eye movements sleep. Physostigmine salicylate appeared to elicit and potentiate the episodes, whereas atropine sulfate and imipramine reduced or blocked them. Th

The origins and role of efferent vagal nuclei in hyperinsulinemia in hypothalamic and genetically obese rodents.

The main brainstem parasympathetic efferent neurons that ultimately reach the pancreas and facilitate insulin secretion are located in the nucleus ambiguus (NA) and the dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (DMX). With regard to insulin secretion, hypothalamic (produced by ventromedial hypothalamic (VMH) lesions) and genetic obesities have features in common: (a) insulin oversecretion is an early abnormality in both syndromes; and (b) this abnormality is vagus nerve-mediated. VMH lesions and possible, spontaneously occurring (i.e. genetic) CNS-located abnormalities appear to result in an inc

[Traumatic injury of ciliary ganglion].

The authors report a case in which slight cranial trauma was followed by manifestations of damage to the right ciliary ganglion. After 3 weeks the signs of damage began to regress and disappeared completely. Laboratory investigations failed to demonstrate any abnormalities. Apart from this trauma there were no other detectable causes, and especially there were no history data suggesting past infection, botulism or syphilis. The mechanism of ciliary ganglion injury is not known (contusion, haematoma, oedema etc.).

Modulation of innate immune response by the vagus nerve in experimental hepatic amebiasis in rats.

The parasympathetic nervous system has a crucial role in immunomodulation of the vagus nerve, its structure provides a pathogen detection system, and a negative feedback to the immune system after the pathogenic agent has been eliminated. Amebiasis is a disease caused by the protozoan parasite Entamoeba histolytica, considered the third leading cause of death in the world. The rats are used as a natural resistance model to amoebic liver infection. The aim of this study is to analyze the interaction of Entamoeba histolytica with neutrophils, macrophages, and NK cells in livers of intact and vag…

[Use of tramal during minor surgical interventions in children].

Intraoperative analgesia was performed using a combination of tramal at a dose of 2-2.5 mg/kg and transcranial electrical stimulation under halothane-nitrous oxide-oxygen mask anesthesia. The study was performed in 12 apparently healthy boys aged 11-13 operated on for II to III degree varicocele. The efficacy of postoperative analgesia was assessed in 68 children aged 8 to 14 subjected to surgery for inguinal and umbilical hernia, varicocele, cryptorchidism. Parameters of central hemodynamics and cardiopolygraphy have been assessed. Intraoperative use of tramal was accompanied by a prompt reco

Excitatory and inhibitory A- and C-reflexes in pelvic parasympathetic efferent nerves elicited by single shock to A and C afferent fibers of perineal and limb somatic nerves in anesthetized rats.

The effects of single electrical shocks to myelinated A and unmyelinated C afferent fibers of perineal and limb somatic nerves on the reflex discharges in pelvic parasympathetic (L6/S1) efferent nerves to the bladder were examined in anesthetized central nervous system (CNS)-intact and acute spinal rats. When the bladder was empty, stimulation of perineal somatic inputs to the L6 and S1 segments from the perineo-femoral branch of a pudendal nerve produced excitatory A- and C-reflex discharge components in postganglionic parasympathetic efferent nerve branches on the bladder surface. When the b
