Parental hostility may have widespread effects across members of the family, whereby one parent's hostility might disrupt the other parent's ability to maintain a positive relationship with his or her children. The present study prospectively examined crossover effects of parental hostility on parent-child relationship quality in a sample of 210 families. At child ages 3, 4, and 5, mothers and fathers completed questionnaires assessing feelings of hostility. In addition, mother-child and father-child dyadic relationship quality were coded at each age during naturalistic home observations. Resu

Over the last 30 years, diagnosis and treatment of childhood cancers have improved significantly due to medical research and advancements in technology. Increasingly, parents are taking on the role of providing "nursing" care for their children, including managing emergency situations as well as everyday treatment needs. This study investigated the perceptions and experiences of parents caring for newly diagnosed children with acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL) in relation to education given prior to the first discharge from hospital. Using a grounded theory approach, 12 parents of children wi

OBJECTIVES: Studies have shown that a parental divorce has a negative effect on parent-child relations. This study examines how adult children's divorce affects the amount of contact children have with older parents, making a distinction between the effects of being single on the one hand and the effects of divorce on the other hand.
METHOD: Using data on older adults in 11 European countries, I estimate within-family regression models to compare multiple adult children per parent (19,454 children aged 30-49; 10,476 parents aged 50-96). I analyze contact frequency while taking into account co

While parenting behaviors among anxious parents have been implicated in the familial transmission of anxiety, little is known about whether these parenting behaviors are unique to specific parental anxiety disorders. The current study examined differences in the use of five specific parenting behaviors (i.e., warmth/positive affect, criticism, doubts of child competency, over-control, and granting of autonomy) in anxious parents with (n = 21) and without (n = 45) social anxiety disorder (SAD) during a 5-minute task with their non-anxious child (aged 7-12 years, M = 9.14). Parents with SAD demo…

We know little about children who have two living nonresident biological parents. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, this study examines the diverse living arrangements of U.S. adolescents in this situation, the kinds of relationships they have with each of their nonresident parents, and how these living arrangements are associated with adolescent well-being. Differences between these adolescents (N = 502) and those who have one nonresident biological parent (N = 4746) are also examined. Results point to certain groups of adolescents with two nonresident pare

OBJECTIVE: Although the offspring of parents with major depressive disorder (MDD) are at increased risk to develop disruptive behavior disorders (DBD) in addition to MDD, it remains unclear whether this heightened risk is due to MDD or to comorbid DBD in the parents.
METHOD: In a secondary analysis of longitudinal data from offspring at risk for MDD and panic disorder and comparison children, we stratified 169 children of parents who had been treated for MDD based upon presence (n=50) or absence (n=119) of parental history of DBD (ADHD, oppositional disorder, and conduct disorder) and contras

PURPOSE: The purpose of this evidence-based review was to examine the effect of parental presence during anesthesia induction on parents' and children's anxiety.
SOURCE: MEDLINE (1950 to 2008) and EMBASE (1980 to 2008) were searched. Studies were restricted to randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and comparative studies only (levels of evidence I-III).
PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Fourteen studies that provided level II or level III evidence were included (nine RCTs, four prospective comparative studies, and one retrospective comparative study). Of the 10 studies that evaluated parents' anxiety, most

PURPOSE: We evaluated the hypothesis that abusive parents' reports may exaggerate rates of child behavior problems in a clinical sample.
METHOD: The association between parental ratings of behavior problems and independent observations of child behaviors was examined in a sample of 205 clinic-referred families, 58 of which had a reported history of physical abuse.
RESULTS: Relative to the comparison group, parents in the abuse group reported more externalizing problems in their children after controlling for parental psychopathology, and displayed more emotionally controlling and less suppor

Children of parents with major depressive disorder (MDD) are four to six times more likely than other children to develop MDD. Little research has examined whether comorbid parental diagnoses further increase children's risk. This study examines whether children of parents with comorbid MDD and Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) (1) are at greater risk for experiencing depressive symptoms and/or episodes and (2) whether such increased risk may be due, in part, to their exhibiting higher levels of cognitive/interpersonal vulnerability factors. Children (n = 140; ages 6-14) of parents with MD

This study was a trial of an intervention programme aimed to improve parental self-efficacy in the management of problem behaviours associated with Asperger syndrome. The intervention was compared across two formats, a 1 day workshop and six individual sessions, and also with a non-intervention control group. The results indicated that, compared with the control group, parents in both intervention groups reported fewer problem behaviours and increased self-efficacy following the interventions, at both 4 weeks and 3 months follow-up. The results also showed a difference in self-efficacy between

The inconclusiveness of the literature on the role of loss of parent in influencing psychiatric disorder in adulthood is well known. A number of reasons involving sampling, location and other methodological features, are given to account for these contradictory findings. A study specially designed to cope with these features is then described and basic results are reported. These indicate that, in a sample of women aged 18-65, loss of mother before the age of 17, either by death or by separation of one year or more, was associated with clinical depression in the year of interview. Loss of fath

101 first transplants were done in patients with end-stage renal disease using kidneys from parents or offspring. All patients were followed up for at least two years, and the absolute two-year patient-survival rate was 88% and the two-year functional-kidney rate was 79%. Actuarial statistics at four years were 82% for survival and 67% for function in the parent-to-child group. In the child-to-parent group absolute patient survival was 83% and transplant function was 79% at two years; these results were unchanged at four years. Thus, transplants from parents to children or from children to par

PURPOSE: In recent years, the prevalence of myopia in children has increased significantly, with increasing screen exposure considered a potential contributing factor. This study aimed to evaluate parents' understanding of the relationship between myopia and screen time, as well as general awareness of myopia in society. In addition, parents' knowledge of protective factors and treatment options was assessed to provide evidence for future preventive strategies and healthcare planning.
METHODS: A structured questionnaire was administered to 2,031 parents to collect data on demographic characte

PURPOSE: Despite growing evidence of the importance of supporting disadvantaged parents during the first phase of parenthood, most existing parenting programmes targeted at this population are individually delivered, even though group-based programmes are cost-efficient, require fewer personnel (i.e. specialised nurses), and are appreciated by parents, particularly those experiencing social isolation. Given the potential benefits, the aim of this study is to understand how and under what circumstances group-based programmes can work effectively for disadvantaged populations.

PURPOSE: Parent-implemented interventions (PII) are evidence-based practices that improve developmental and functional outcomes for autistic children. However, limited attention has been given to the processes of parent engagement within PII, despite its potential to shape intervention sustainability and effectiveness. This scoping review examined how parent engagement has been incorporated and reported in parent-implemented interventions for autistic children in the United States.
METHODS: Following PRISMA-ScR guidelines, PubMed and EBSCO (nine sub-databases) were searched for peer-reviewed

High parenting stress is associated with diminished quality of life in parents and more problem behaviors in autistic children. Mindfulness-based interventions have demonstrated efficacy in mitigating parenting stress. Psychological flexibility and resilience have been recognized as protective factors against psychological distress. However, the extent to which psychological flexibility and resilience mediate the effect of mindfulness on parenting stress among parents of autistic children remains unclear. This cross-sectional study examined the mediating roles of psychological flexibility and …

Investigating psychopathological processes and symptomatology is essential for understanding how psychological states emerge and are maintained over time. This preregistered intensive longitudinal study investigates within-person associations between key mental health symptoms, psychopathological processes, and negative experiences tied to parenthood. Daily observations from 514 parents (18,916 daily observations in total, mean daily completed observations = 36.80, mean age = 39 years) during the COVID-19 pandemic were modelled using multilevel dynamic network analysis, unveiling temporal acro

Diarrheal diseases are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children globally, and antibiotics are often inappropriately used in the management of pediatric diarrhea. This study explores how parents' expectations influence the prescription of antibiotics for pediatric diarrhea in Bangladesh. We used qualitative methods to explore parents' expectations when bringing their child with diarrhea to hospital and how physicians perceive and manage expectations. We conducted interviews with 36 parents and 18 hospital physicians across three hospitals. Data analysis followed an applied themati
