[A clinicopathologic study on oncocytoma and oncocytic carcinoma of the salivary glands].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the clinicopathologic features, differential diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of oncocytoma and oncocytic carcinoma of the salivary glands. METHODS: The clinicopathologic features were studied in 23 cases of oncocytomas and 15 cases of oncocytic carcinomas, and immunohistochemical staining as well as electron microscopy were performed. RESULTS: Most oncocytomas occurred in the parotid gland (95.6%) with no recurrence. The diagnosis was made based on histopathological features. Oncocytic carcinomas were high-grade tumors, mainly occurring in the parotid gland. The

Amyloid-rich low grade adenocarcinoma of the parotid: fine-needle aspiration cytology with histologic correlations.

Amyloid deposits are unexpected in salivary gland tumors. A 60-year-old woman presented with a 1.8 cm, slow-growing parotid mass. Both fine-needle aspiration and frozen section were misinterpreted as pleomorphic adenoma. The final pathology was amyloid-rich low grade adenocarcinoma of the parotid gland. The aspirates consisted of three components: mucin, amyloid, and tumor cells. The mucin was unusually thick, stringy, and metachromatic. The amyloid presented as innumerable concretions scattered solitarily or in small jigsaw puzzle-like aggregates, individually wrapped by tumor cells. The tumo

Salivary gland dynamic imaging combined with tomosynthesis fusion imaging for evaluating postoperative salivary gland function changes in patients with differentiated thyroid cancer undergoing initial 131I therapy.

BACKGROUND: 131I therapy is a targeted therapy for patients with differentiated thyroid cancer (DTC) after surgery, reducing the risk of tumor recurrence and metastasis. Radioactive iodine can accumulate in the salivary glands, causing radiation damage. Dynamic imaging of the salivary glands can objectively assess the morphology and function of the salivary glands, making it a simple and non-invasive diagnostic method. The purpose of this study was to quantitatively analyze salivary gland function changes in patients with DTC undergoing postoperative 131I therapy using salivary gland dynamic i

Lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland.

Primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the salivary glands is an exceptional oncological condition that predominantly emerges within the parotid gland. A significant prevalence of lymphoepithelial carcinoma has been reported in the Inuit population, along with an associated positive serology for Epstein-Barr virus in these endemic regions. In this paper, we present a case of primary lymphoepithelial carcinoma of the parotid gland in a 68-year-old female patient with a history of diabetes and hypertension residing in a non-endemic area. Histology plays a critical role in the definitive diagnosis

PAROTID CARCINOMA IN A FREE-RANGING CALIFORNIA SEA LION ( ZALOPHUS CALIFORNIANUS).

A free-ranging juvenile California sea lion ( Zalophus californianus) stranded on the coast of Vancouver, British Columbia, with signs of lethargy and emaciation in April 2016. An asymmetrical skull with a prominent superficial cervical lymph node was found on initial assessment. Fine-needle aspirates and biopsies of the lymph node were consistent with neoplasia and the animal was humanely euthanized and presented for necropsy. A metastatic parotid gland adenocarcinoma was diagnosed with regional lymph node and pulmonary metastases. Local invasion of contiguous skeletal muscle, bone, ear, and

Current surgical management of malignant parotid tumors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Surgical treatment of parotid cancer presents challenges due to the rarity of the disease, the histologic heterogeneity, and the complex regional anatomy. Recently published international guidelines contain recommendations for surgical management of the primary tumor and the neck lymph nodes, but still allow both T and N to be managed in different ways. This review summarizes the remaining areas of discussion. RECENT FINDINGS: The reference treatment for parotid cancer is total parotidectomy; however, for low-grade, low-stage tumors a superficial parotidectomy may be suffic

Genomic profiling guided therapy for synchronous SCC and CLL of the parotid gland: a rare case report.

Synchronous squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) in the parotid gland is rare, with limited evidence on personalized treatment. We report a 75-year-old male with prior cutaneous SCC who presented with a hypermetabolic parotid mass and cervical lymphadenopathy; fine needle aspiration confirmed SCC. Surgery revealed poorly differentiated SCC and CLL in multiple lymph nodes. He underwent radiotherapy but developed regional SCC relapse without systemic CLL symptoms. Recurrence in the ear required extensive surgical resection and reconstruction. Genetic profiling sho

Anatomic variability in the relation between the retromandibular vein and the facial nerve: a case report, literature review and classification.

Knowledge of anatomic variations concerning head and neck veins is important to surgeons performing interventions in these regions, as well as to radiologists. The retromandibular vein is used as a guide to expose the facial nerve branches inside the parotid gland, during parotid surgery and open reduction of mandibular condyle fractures. It is also used as a landmark for localisation of the nerve and compartmentalisation of parotid gland lesions preoperatively, during computed tomography, magnetic resonance imaging and sonography. In this paper, the anomalous retromandibular vein's course on

Soft Tissue Metastases in Head and Neck Cutaneous Squamous Cell Carcinoma.

OBJECTIVE: Soft tissue metastases (STM) in head and neck cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (HNcSCC) are non-nodal based metastases to the parotid and cervical soft tissues of the head and neck. This is a unique subgroup of regional metastases amongst patients with cSCC and have been shown to be associated with poor prognosis. Detailed studies of this subgroup are lacking in the literature. A retrospective cohort analysis was performed to characterize the prognostic significance of STM in HNcSCC based on individual clinicopathological features. METHODS: Patients with HNcSCC with STM were ident

Composition of pellicles formed in vivo on tooth surfaces in different parts of the dentition, and in vitro on hydroxyapatite.

Saliva from the major salivary glands dominates different areas of the mouth. The parotid (PS) and submandibular/sublingual (SMS) saliva differ in their protein composition, and thus, the composition of pellicles formed in various parts of the dentition might vary. In this study, proteins incorporated in 60-min pellicles from the premolar and front regions of the mouths of 4 subjects were examined using sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and immunoblotting using antibodies to amylase, albumin, IgA, parotid saliva agglutinin, low molecular weight SMS mucin (MG2) and prol

Studies on the quantitative computed tomography of normal parotid and submandibular salivary glands.

A better understanding of computed tomographic (CT) numbers of normal salivary glands might help make CT diagnosis more accurate. The CT numbers of the parotid and submandibular salivary glands were measured using both non-enhanced and enhanced CT images by setting a circular region of interest (ROI). The normal range of CT numbers, the difference between the CT numbers of right and left glands, and the correlation with age were all investigated. There was a close correlation between the CT numbers of right and left glands. No significant difference was seen between the average of right and le

Atypical Extraoral Presentation of a Heterotopic Gastrointestinal Cyst on the Face: A Case Report.

Heterotopias and choristomas are congenital lesions characterized by the presence of histologically normal tissues at non-physiological anatomic sites. The presence of gastrointestinal tissue in the oral cavity has been recognized as a heterotopic gastrointestinal cyst (HGIC) of the oral cavity. An intestinal heterotopia on the face, in relation to the parotid gland, is extremely rare. Highlighting this possibility is the case of a 42-year-old, non-habitué female with swelling in the parotid region of the face for two years. Clinical examination and radiographic investigations ruled out the po…

Partial protection of rat parotid glands from irradiation-induced hyposalivation by manganese superoxide dismutase.

Head-and-neck irradiation in rats often results in reduction of water and food intake, weight loss, hyposalivation, and suppression of the white blood cell (WBC) count. Oxygen free radicals are believed to be involved in this deleterious process. Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is known to act as a first line of antioxidant defence against oxygen free radicals. Here, the protective effect of manganese SOD (MnSOD) and copper/zinc SOD (Cu/ZnSOD) against irradiation-induced injuries to the head and neck in rats was investigated. Wistar rats were irradiated with 15 Gy X-rays delivered to the head-and-n
