Why Has Gastroschisis Increased Over Time and Why Is It More Common in Infants of Young Mothers?

BACKGROUND: Although many factors are associated with gastroschisis risk, studies have not systematically explored whether they account for its increasing frequency over the past decades or its inverse association with maternal age. We examined whether previously reported risk factors for gastroschisis from the National Birth Defects Prevention Study (NBDPS) explain the association with increasing temporal prevalence or young maternal age. METHODS: Using data from the NBDPS (1997-2011), crude odds ratios (ORs) were calculated for birth years 2005-2011 versus 1997-2004 and maternal age < 25 ve

Recent epidemiological studies on ionizing radiation and childhood cancer in Germany.

PURPOSE: The results from recent epidemiological studies based on the German Childhood Cancer Registry are summarized. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An oecological study covers 16 years' incidence of childhood malignancies in areas surrounding nuclear facilities and in matched control regions. Two population-based case control studies explore potential risk factors of childhood leukaemia in the state of Lower Saxony (1988 93) and in all western states of Germany (1992-94). RESULTS: There was no increased incidence of childhood leukaemia and other malignancies in the vicinity of nuclear installation

An exploratory case-control study of brain tumors in children.

An exploratory case-control study of childhood brain tumors was conducted in southern Ontario between 1977 and 1983, on 74 cases and 138 age- and sex-matched population controls. A significantly elevated risk (perhaps due to early case symptoms) was seen for skull X-rays at least 5 years prior to diagnosis, and for head or neck injuries which required medical attention. However, no evidence of an increased risk appeared for exposure to sick pets or to pesticides, maternal or paternal history of smoking, and various birth characteristics or antenatal exposure of the child, though these have pre

Changes in parental smoking during pregnancy and risks of adverse birth outcomes and childhood overweight in Europe and North America: An individual participant data meta-analysis of 229,000 singleton births.

BACKGROUND: Fetal smoke exposure is a common and key avoidable risk factor for birth complications and seems to influence later risk of overweight. It is unclear whether this increased risk is also present if mothers smoke during the first trimester only or reduce the number of cigarettes during pregnancy, or when only fathers smoke. We aimed to assess the associations of parental smoking during pregnancy, specifically of quitting or reducing smoking and maternal and paternal smoking combined, with preterm birth, small size for gestational age, and childhood overweight. METHODS AND FINDINGS:

Inhalation teratology and reproduction studies with 1,1-dichloro-2,2,2-trifluoroethane (HCFC-123).

HCFC 123 is one of the chemicals being developed as a replacement for CFC 11 in refrigerant and solvent applications. Supplementing earlier rat teratology studies, a rabbit inhalation teratology study was conducted. In addition, one-generation and two-generation inhalation reproduction studies were conducted. In the teratology study, the pregnant rabbits were exposed to levels of 0 (control), 500, 1500, and 5000 ppm, 6 hr per day from Days 6 through 18 of gestation. Slight body weight losses and reduced food consumption were seen in does in all three exposure level groups. This response follow

A Survey of Fatty Acid Content of the Male Reproductive System in Mice Supplemented With Arachidonic Acid.

Paternal exposure to high-fat diets or individual fatty acids (FAs) including arachidonic acid (AA) modifies progeny traits by poorly understood mechanisms. Specific male reproductive system FAs may be involved in paternal inheritance, as they can modify a range of cellular components, including the epigenome. Our objective was to determine FAs in compartments of the male reproductive system that potentially affect ejaculate composition-right and left testicular interstitial fluid (TIF), vesicular gland fluid (VGF), and epididymal adipose tissue (EAT)-in mice exposed to AA or vehicle daily for…

Immune maladaptation in the etiology of preeclampsia: a review of corroborative epidemiologic studies.

Genuine preeclampsia is a disease of first pregnancies. The protective effect of multiparity, however, is lost with change of partner. Also, exposure to semen provides protection against developing preeclampsia. Analogous to altered paternity, artificial donor insemination and oocyte donation are reported to result in a substantial increase of preeclampsia. Thus, epidemiologic studies strongly suggest that immune maladaptation is involved in the etiology of preeclampsia. Although the exact etiology of preeclampsia remains unknown, the conclusions derived from epidemiologic studies may have con

Exploring the knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions of young men towards fertility in the UK: A cross-sectional survey.

INTRODUCTION: Across many countries, paternal age at childbirth is rising, increasing exposure to age-related fertility decline. This study evaluated fertility-related knowledge, attitudes, and perceptions among young men. METHODS: An anonymous cross-sectional survey was distributed via social media between 13/02/2025 and 29/09/2025. UK adult males completed 54 close-ended questions covering participant characteristics, fertility knowledge, reproductive aspirations, and personal/socioeconomic influences. RESULTS: A total of 408 men participated in the survey, of whom 214 (52.5%) completed al

Chronic Exposure to Cadmium Induces Differential Methylation in Mice Spermatozoa.

Cadmium exposure is ubiquitous and has been linked to diseases including cancers and reproductive defects. Since cadmium is nonmutagenic, it is thought to exert its gene dysregulatory effects through epigenetic reprogramming. Several studies have implicated germline exposure to cadmium in developmental reprogramming. However, most of these studies have focused on maternal exposure, while the impact on sperm fertility and disease susceptibility has received less attention. In this study, we used reduced representation bisulfite sequencing to comprehensively investigate the impact of chronic cad

Passive smoking exposure in adults and chronic respiratory symptoms (SAPALDIA Study). Swiss Study on Air Pollution and Lung Diseases in Adults, SAPALDIA Team.

The association between passive exposure to tobacco smoke and respiratory symptoms was examined in a sample of 4,197 never-smoking adults. They constituted the never-smoking subsample of a random sample of 9,651 adults (age, 18 to 60 yr) in eight areas in Switzerland. Information on passive smoking exposure and standardized questions on respiratory symptoms were obtained via a questionnaire administered by trained examiners. After controlling for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), study area, atopy, and parental and sibling history, passive smoking exposure was associated with an elevated risk o

Unveiling the influences of prenatal and maternal factors on the journey of an autistic child.

BACKGROUND: Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a complex lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder with a high and increasing global prevalence. Although the precise causes are unknown, both genetic and environmental factors, including maternal ones during pregnancy, significantly influence its development. Therefore, this study endeavors to explore the potential causes of autism, including maternal and paternal prenatal risk factors, as well as antenatal and natal maternal risk factors, and their associations with the severity of ASD in mothers of children with ASD, from February to May 2024. Pathophysiological effects of hypoxia on testis function and spermatogenesis.

Multiple conditions can cause hypoxia in the testis, including exposure to high altitude, sleep apnoea, testicular torsion and varicocele. Varicocele accounts for up to 44% of instances of primary infertility, but the cumulative contribution of hypoxic conditions to male infertility is undefined. Results of controlled hypobaric hypoxia studies have demonstrated a substantial detrimental effect of short-term and long-term exposures on sperm; however, downstream effects on embryo development and offspring health are less well understood. Hypoxia can have direct and indirect effects on the molecu

Prenatal risk factors for Tourette Syndrome: a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Tourette Syndrome (TS) appears to be an inherited disorder, although genetic abnormalities have been identified in less than 1% of patients, and the mode of inheritance is uncertain. Many studies have investigated environmental factors that might contribute to the onset and severity of tics and associated comorbidities such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) and attention deficit hyperactive disorder (ADHD). A systematic review and qualitative analysis were performed to provide a broad view of the association between pre- and perinatal factors and TS. METHODS: The Medline, Emb

Developmental Toxicity of Micro(Nano)Plastics (MNPs) Exposure in Mammals: A Mini-Review.

Micro(nano)plastics (MNPs) pose a significant threat to both ecological environments and human health. This review systematically examines the developmental toxicity of MNPs in mammals, with a particular focus on the impact of maternal and paternal exposure on offspring. Evidence indicates that MNPs can cross placental barriers, inducing abnormal development of embryos, fetuses, and placentas. This disruption leads to a range of adverse outcomes, including neurodevelopmental abnormalities, behavioral disorders, reproductive system damage, etc., in offspring. Through a comprehensive analysis of…

Birth Outcome of Children Fathered by Men Treated with Systemic Corticosteroids during the Conception Period - A Cohort Study based on Nationwide Data.

Information on the safety of paternal use of medications prior to the time of conception is limited, and there is little available evidence regarding possible adverse effects of paternal use of systemic corticosteroids (SCS). In this cohort study, based on nationwide data, we examined the association between paternal use of SCS prior to conception and adverse birth outcome. The study includes data from all singletons born in Denmark from 1 January 1997 through 2013 (N = 1,013,994). Children fathered by men who redeemed a prescription of SCS within 3 months before conception (N = 2380) constitu
