Impaired visual acuity as an only symptom of shunt malfunction, long time after initial cyst-peritoneal shunting for arachnoid cyst: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Long-term outcomes after surgical treatment of arachnoid cysts (ACs) have not been reported adequately. Impaired visual acuity is not a common symptom of shunt dependency syndrome due to cyst-peritoneal (CP) shunt malfunction for ACs. We report a case of CP shunt malfunction, who presented only impaired visual acuity as a symptom, long after the initial surgical treatment. CASE DESCRIPTION: A 16-year-old boy was surgically treated for the left frontal AC with CP shunting at 2 years of age. Extension of the peritoneal shunt catheter was performed at 15 years of age. A year later, h

The prevalence of cerebral visual disturbance in children with cerebral palsy.

Assessment of visual acuity using the visual acuity card procedure in 164 children with cerebral palsy revealed low visual acuity in 71 per cent. Results of ophthalmological examination were available for 74 of these patients, but could not explain adequately the low visual acuity of 36 of the 43 patients (84 per cent) assessed by both the acuity card procedure and other techniques. There is a high probability that cerebral visual disturbance is present in these patients. Awareness of visual disability when compiling a programme of visual and neurodevelopmental stimulation for children with ce

Crystallization after intravitreal ganciclovir injection.

PURPOSE: To report crystal formation as a complication of intravitreal ganciclovir injection. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A 73-year-old female patient with unilateral cytomegalovirus retinitis was treated with intravitreous ganciclovir (4 mg/0.04 mL). RESULTS: After the intravitreal injection, sudden crystallization was observed in the vitreous humor. The patient experienced marked reduction in visual acuity and increased intraocular pressure. Despite aqueous paracenthesis and pars plana vitrectomy, optic atrophy was observed and her visual acuity remained unimproved after 12 months. CONCLUSION:

Oestrus ovis ophthalmomyiasis with keratitis.

A 35-year-old male patient presented with complaints of redness, swelling around the eyelids, watering, and irritation in the right eye. At presentation his best-corrected visual acuity was 20/20 partial in the right eye. The tarsal conjunctiva of the upper eyelid showed injection with pseudomembrane. Underneath the pseudomembrane we noticed four motile larvae. The cornea showed an irregular cobweb-like mucous plaque adherent to the epithelium, with a clear stroma. The pseudomembrane was easily peeled-off under topical anaesthesia. The organisms were removed and identified as Oestrus ovis. Thr

Pediatric craniopharyngioma with significantly increased intraoperative visual evoked potential amplitude and postoperative visual acuity improvement: a case report.

Visual evoked potential (VEP) is an established modality that allows safe brain tumor resection and preservation of optical function. We herein present a case of a pediatric craniopharyngioma with significant improvement in the VEP amplitude detected during endoscopic transsphenoidal surgery (ETS) and obvious postoperative improvement in visual acuity. A 13-year-old boy presented with visual acuity disturbance in his right eye and was followed up for 5 months by an ophthalmologist. His visual acuity rapidly worsened, and a suprasellar lesion with calcification was found on brain computed tomog

Effect of Simultaneous Endothelial Keratoplasty and Cataract Surgery: A Secondary Analysis of the Descemet Endothelial Thickness Comparison Trial.

PURPOSE: Combining cataract surgery with endothelial keratoplasty (triple EK) is a common practice and may be safer because it commits the patient to only one surgery. This study aimed to determine whether outcomes of pseudophakic endothelial keratoplasty and triple EK have similar outcomes. METHODS: This was a non-prespecified secondary analysis of a multicenter, double-masked, randomized, controlled clinical trial. Enrollment centers included the Casey Eye Institute at Oregon Health and Sciences University and the Byers Eye Institute at Stanford University. Patients with damaged or diseased

[First Experience with Femtosecond Laser Presbyopia Correction Method INTRACOR].

UNLABELLED: We report the first experience with presbyopia correcting femtosecond laser surgical procedure INTRACOR. This procedure is so far the only one that is made purely intrastromally without generating a wound connected to corneal surface or anterior chamber.Presbyopia - caused by physiological aging and decreasing elasticity of the lens, impairs patients accommodative ability. In the case of the method INTRACOR, presbyopia is corrected by steepening of corneal curvature in the central optical zone. Procedure is usually performed only in the non-dominant eye. METHODS: Intracor procedur

[Landolt C and snellen e acuity: differences in strabismus amblyopia?].

BACKGROUND: Assessment of visual acuity depends on the optotypes used for measurement. The ability to recognize different optotypes differs even if their critical details appear under the same visual angle. Since optotypes are evaluated on individuals with good visual acuity and without eye disorders, differences in the lower visual acuity range cannot be excluded. In this study, visual acuity measured with the Snellen E was compared to the Landolt C acuity. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 100 patients (age 8 - 90 years, median 60.5 years) with various eye disorders, among them 39 with amblyopia due to

Morning glory syndrome.

Morning glory syndrome is a congenital optic disc anomaly in which much of the excavated colobomatous optic disc is filled with glial tissue. Ocular complications may include strabismus, reduced visual acuity and retinal detachment and it may have systemic associations as in Aicardi's syndrome. A patient with monocular morning glory syndrome and reduced visual acuity is reported. The pattern reversal visually evoked potential was reduced and the latency increased in the affected eye.

Listeria monocytogenes endophthalmitis with a black hypopyon.

A 68-year-old woman had a marked decrease in visual acuity, increased intraocular pressure, and acute iridocyclitis. She developed a pigmented hypopyon simulating an occult intraocular melanoma. Two anterior chamber paracenteses showed growth of Listeria monocytogenes. The patient received systemic intravenous penicillin, topical fortified gentamicin sulfate drops, and intraocular injections of cephaloridine. On discharge from the hospital after a two-week stay, visual acuity had improved and intraocular pressure had decreased.

Asynchronous pediatric specialty care: eConsults and eVisits as tools to improve access, demand management, and care coordination.

Timely access to pediatric subspecialty care remains a persistent challenge for health systems, families, primary care providers (PCPs), and specialists. Traditional referral pathways often require in-person visits for low acuity questions that can often be addressed through structured review of existing clinical information. Provider-to-provider electronic consults (eConsults) offer an asynchronous, electronic medical record-based model that enables PCPs to obtain pediatric specialty guidance without requiring an in-person subspecialty visit. Related asynchronous models, including patient-to-

[Intracranial hypertension with severe and irreversible reduced acuity and impaired visual fields after oral tetracycline].

A young, non-obese woman aged 24 years with normal blood pressure developed intracranial hypertension after the oral use of tetracycline. Neuro-ophthalmologic examination revealed severely reduced acuity, papilledema, and concentric impaired visual fields. She was treated with acetazolamide and recurrent lumbar punctures and recovered, but without improvement in either acuity or visual fields. Intracranial hypertension is a fairly rare disease characterised by increased intracranial pressure without structural abnormalities in the brain or hydrocephalus, and is termed idiopathic in the absence
