Effects of scopolamine on visual evoked potentials in aging and dementia.

The unusual combination of a normal pattern reversal VEP and a delayed flash VEP has been reported in patients with dementia of Alzheimer's type (DAT). Hyoscine hydrobromide has been reported to produce a similar VEP abnormality in young, healthy subjects. In the present study, we assessed the relative sensitivity of DAT patients and healthy young, middle-aged and elderly subjects to temporary cholinergic blockade. We report VEP latency values following 3 doses of scopolamine and after a peripheral anticholinergic agent. Flash P2 latency was not significantly slower in DAT patients than in the

Peripheral contrast sensitivity in glaucoma and ocular hypertension.

Contrast sensitivity has been measured in patients with glaucoma and ocular hypertension, the latter graded into high, medium, and low risk clinical groups. Measurements were made centrally and peripherally at 10 degrees, 15 degrees, 20 degrees, and 25 degrees off-axis at each of the four meridians 45 degrees, 135 degrees, 225 degrees, and 315 degrees. A sine wave grating of 1.9 cycles/degree, reversing at 1 Hz was used. It was displayed on a 100-Hz refresh rate monitor. Normal values were established to compare those from 41 eyes from patients with either primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) wi

Right visual hemiagnosia: a single case report.

A patient with an infarct in the territory of the left posterior cerebral artery, but without campimetric deficits presented with some reading difficulties and a visual agnosia restricted to the right visual field. Although the patient was able to match accurately in his agnosic field, he was unable to name or otherwise identify objects. The implications of this case for the anatomical substrates of visual processing and the functions of each hemisphere are discussed.

The historical roots and recurring issues of neurobiological studies of face perception.

Evidence concerning the neurobiological basis of face perception is converging from three directions. First, there are studies of neurological patients who present with specific difficulties in the recognition of familiar faces. Second, there are neuropsychological studies of face perception in normal people which identify some of the psychological mechanisms involved in face perception. Thirdly, there are neurophysiological studies in non-human primates which point to specific neural mechanisms which selectively process faces. A review of the literature from these three distinct areas of rese

Recognition of Japanese kanji words in children with specific learning disorders: a preliminary study using magnetoencephalography.

INTRODUCTION: In Western countries, reading disorders are believed to be caused by phonological processing problems. Conversely, Japanese children with developmental dyslexia (DD) and developmental dysgraphia often have difficulty learning kanji that are ideographic characters. It is believed that kanji learning and alphabet learning have different pathologies, as the latter uses phonetic character. In this study, we aimed to clarify the characteristics of kanji word recognition in Japanese children with DD and developmental dysgraphia using magnetoencephalography with high spatial resolution.

Brain activity underlying face and face pareidolia processing: an ERP study.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Face pareidolia is described as an interpretation of any unrelated object seen for the first time as a face. It is still unclear how to face pareidolia is processed. In this study, the neural basis of face and face pareidolia processing was investigated through recording event-related potentials (ERPs). METHODS: The ERPs were recorded from 35 right-handed and healthy participants in response to faces and face pareidolia. Amplitudes and latencies of N170, vertex-positive potential (VPP), and N250 components were analyzed, and current source density (CSD) maps relevant t

Development of synaesthetic consistency: Repeated autonomous engagement with graphemes and colours leads to consistent associations.

Synaesthetic consistency is the hallmark of synaesthesia and plays an important role in the definition and validation of synaesthesia. It has been hypothesised that the acquisition of initially unspecified synaesthetic associations is based on consolidation processes. Thus, we investigated in non-synaesthetes whether repeatedly engaging with grapheme-colour associations mimics the developmental trajectory of synaesthetic consistency in genuine grapheme-colour synaesthesia. This was the case for the two tested experimental groups, irrespective of whether they were instructed to memorize their c

Early development of letter specialization in left fusiform is associated with better word reading and smaller fusiform face area.

A functional region of left fusiform gyrus termed "the visual word form area" (VWFA) develops during reading acquisition to respond more strongly to printed words than to other visual stimuli. Here, we examined responses to letters among 5- and 6-year-old early kindergarten children (N = 48) with little or no school-based reading instruction who varied in their reading ability. We used functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to measure responses to individual letters, false fonts, and faces in left and right fusiform gyri. We then evaluated whether signal change and size (spatial extent)

Reading and visual word recognition ability in semantic dementia is not predicted by semantic performance.

This paper describes longitudinal testing of two Semantic Dementia (SD) cases. It is common for patients with SD to present with deficits in reading aloud irregular words (i.e. surface dyslexia), and in lexical decision. Theorists from the connectionist tradition (e.g. Woollams et al., 2007) argue that in SD cases with concurrent surface dyslexia, the deterioration of irregular word reading and recognition performance is related to the extent of the deterioration of the semantic system. The Dual Route Cascaded model (DRC; Coltheart et al., 2001) makes no such prediction. We examined this issue

Face perception in pure alexia: Complementary contributions of the left fusiform gyrus to facial identity and facial speech processing.

Recent concepts of cerebral visual processing predict from overlapping patterns of face and word activation in cortex that left fusiform lesions will not only cause pure alexia but also lead to mild impairments of face processing. Our goal was to determine if alexic subjects had deficits in facial identity processing similar to those seen after right fusiform lesions, or complementary deficits affecting different aspects of face processing. We studied four alexic patients whose lesions involved the left fusiform gyrus and one prosopagnosic subject with a right fusiform lesion, on standard test

Probing short-term face memory in developmental prosopagnosia.

It has recently been proposed that the face recognition deficits seen in neurodevelopmental disorders may reflect impaired short-term face memory (STFM). For example, introducing a brief delay between the presentation of target and test faces seems to disproportionately impair matching or recognition performance in individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders. The present study sought to determine whether deficits of STFM contribute to impaired face recognition seen in Developmental Prosopagnosia. To determine whether developmental prosopagnosics exhibit impaired STFM, the present study used a s

On compensatory strategies and computational models: the case of pure alexia.

The article is concerned with inferences from the behaviour of neurological patients to models of normal function. It takes the letter-by-letter reading strategy common in pure alexic patients as an example of the methodological problems involved in making such inferences that compensatory strategies produce. The evidence is discussed on the possible use of three ways the letter-by-letter reading process might operate: "reversed spelling"; the use of the phonological input buffer as a temporary holding store during word building; and the use of serial input to the visual word-form system entir

Graphesthesia: a test of graphemic movement representations or tactile imagery?

Patients with corticobasal degeneration (CBG) often demonstrate agraphesthesia in the same hand they demonstrate apraxia. To recognize letters written in their hand subjects can develop a spatial representation and access graphemic representations. Alternatively, people can use movement working memory and match movement patterns to stored letter movement representations. To learn the method normally used without vision, normal subjects (12) had letters written on their palm either in the normal manner or in a reverse direction. If letters written on the hand are recognized by their spatial fea

Integrated memory for objects, places, and temporal order: evidence for episodic-like memory in mice.

Human episodic memory refers to the recollection of an unique past experience in terms of what happened, and where and when it happened. Factoring out the issue of conscious recollection, episodic memory, even at the behavioral level, has been difficult to demonstrate in non-human mammals. Although, it was previously shown that rodents can associate what and when or what and where information given on unique trials, it proved to be difficult to demonstrate memory for what, where, and when simultaneously in mammals, without using extensive training procedures, which might induce semantic rather

They look virtually the same: Extraretinal representation of symmetry in virtual reality.

The brain must identify objects from different viewpoints that change the retinal image. This study examined the conditions under which the brain spends computational resources to construct view-invariant, extraretinal representations in a 3D virtual environment. We focused on extraretinal representation of visual symmetry. Visual symmetry activates the extrastriate visual cortex and generates an Event Related Potential (ERP) called Sustained Posterior Negativity (SPN). Amplitude is lower for symmetrical compared to asymmetrical stimuli at posterior electrodes. Given a symmetric pattern on a p

Visual space and object space in the cerebral cortex of retinal disease patients.

The lower areas of the hierarchically organized visual cortex are strongly retinotopically organized, with strong responses to specific retinotopic stimuli, and no response to other stimuli outside these preferred regions. Higher areas in the ventral occipitotemporal cortex show a weak eccentricity bias, and are mainly sensitive for object category (e.g., faces versus buildings). This study investigated how the mapping of eccentricity and category sensitivity using functional magnetic resonance imaging is affected by a retinal lesion in two very different low vision patients: a patient with a

Visual form matching supports arithmetic across visual and auditory modalities.

Arithmetic computation is ubiquitous in daily life and occurs in both visual and auditory modalities. Visual form matching, as a key visual perceptual ability, serves as an important cognitive basis for arithmetic ability, but its role in auditory arithmetic tasks remains unclear. The primary aim of this study was to examine whether the association between visual form matching and arithmetic processing is influenced by the presentation modality. A sample of 241 undergraduates from China (109 males, 132 females, M age = 21.49, SD = 2.37) participated in the study. Participants completed seven t

The low prevalence effect in children.

Low prevalence search tasks occur everyday and are characterized by targets occurring infrequently across repeated searches. This phenomenon, termed the low prevalence effect (LPE), refers to observers' reduced likelihood of detecting rare targets when they are present. This pattern holds particular importance in high-stakes visual search contexts. As an example, 20 to 30 percent of cancers are missed in radiological screenings due to the perceptual challenge of finding low prevalence abnormalities. While the LPE is well documented in adults, little is known about whether young children demons
