The Development and Evolution of Group Medical Visits at UW Health.

INTRODUCTION: Chronic disease management presents substantial challenges for both patients and health care providers, often limited by time, resources, and operational complexities. Group medical visits (GMVs) at UW Health have evolved as a collaborative intervention, combining clinician-led care with peer support to address chronic conditions such as chronic pain, heart disease, anxiety, and more. METHODS: This program evaluation explores the development and characteristics of GMVs at UW Health through a qualitative approach, utilizing interviews, observations, and questionnaires to analyze

Contextual influences on school staff's motivation of implementing a school-based toothbrushing program in Taiwan: an action research study.

BACKGROUND: School-based toothbrushing programs control children’s caries effectively. Given the superior efficacy of establishing a brushing routine with the program compared to relying solely on traditional education to develop autonomous brushing habits, the aim of this study pertains to how to motivate school staff to implement toothbrushing programs. METHODS: Twenty elementary schools participated in the school-based toothbrushing program in Taiwan. Action research and participant engagement were adopted for three years. Ninety-one school participants (including staff, principals, and sch

Peer stress and adolescent deviant behaviors: Unraveling the roles of loneliness and stress mindset.

Peer stress during adolescence is a salient interpersonal challenge and has been linked to increased engagement in deviant behaviors. However, the socioemotional mechanisms underlying this association, as well as factors that may buffer adolescents against its negative effects, remain underexplored. The current study investigated the longitudinal association between peer stress and deviant behaviors among Chinese adolescents, focusing on loneliness as a mediating mechanism and stress mindset as a moderator of the association between peer stress and deviant behaviors, as well as between peer st

Employing Peer Outreach and Whole Health in Recovery (EMPOWER) for homeless-experienced veterans: protocol for a hybrid type 3 implementation trial.

BACKGROUND: Homelessness is a national crisis in the United States, particularly in the veteran population. Due to multiple chronic conditions, homeless individuals have elevated risk for acute care service use. Engagement in primary and specialty care can mitigate this risk. Interventions grounded in evidence-based practices of peer support, patient-centered care, and whole health are effective for increasing service engagement. However, implementation of such interventions with high-acuity patients often requires multi-component strategies that are intensive and costly. This protocol paper d

Maximizing the Value of Learning Assistants for Students' Belonging, Mattering, and Confidence in Gateway STEM Courses.

Learning Assistants (LAs) can reduce psychosocial barriers in gateway science courses. In this study, we specify the impact on students from different demographic groups. An inductive analysis of group interviews with 33 students from introductory biology and general chemistry courses revealed six narratives that capture students' experiences with course structures, people, and personal connections. All students valued varied, flexible resources, but other narratives differed across groups. Underrepresented racial/ethnic and first-generation students described active and collaborative learning

"No Words Needed": Results of a Survey on How Parents of Children With Neurodevelopmental Disorders Perceive (In)formal Peer Support.

BACKGROUND: Parents caring for children with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDD) face unique and ongoing challenges that impact family well-being. Peer support from individuals with shared lived experiences can offer recognition, shared understanding and empowerment. Despite its promise, peer support for parents of children with NDD remains largely informal, under-researched and poorly integrated within standard healthcare, limiting its potential accessibility and impact. Little is known about what parents seek in peer support, how they experience it, and which factors facilitate meaningful eng

Designing a Peer Navigation Program Alongside Women With Lived Experience of Domestic, Family, and Sexual Violence.

BACKGROUND: Domestic, family, and sexual violence (DFSV) is a significant public health issue. There are currently large gaps in prevention, early intervention, and longer-term recovery and healing support for victim-survivors of DFSV. Implementing peer navigation programs to support victim-survivors has the potential to address some of these gaps. Yet there is a lack of current research on the components necessary to implement these programs, including in primary care settings. OBJECTIVE: To develop core components of a DFSV peer navigation program tailored to primary care settings. METHODS

In-hospital peer-supported human milk bank management model and its association with human milk feeding proportions and clinical outcomes in extremely preterm infants: a recipient-to-voluntary-donor approach.

BACKGROUND: Human milk feeding proportions among preterm infants remain unsatisfactory, and donor human milk is recommended as the best alternative when mother's own milk is insufficient. Although established human milk banks provide essential donor human milk services, some settings may face challenges related to donor continuity and the timely alignment of donor milk supply with recipient demand. We therefore developed an in-hospital peer-supported human milk bank management model featuring a structured recipient-to-voluntary-donor pathway within the same neonatal unit. METHODS: This peer-s

Adolescents' Attitudes and Perceptions Toward Peers with Hearing Aids: The Hearing Aid Effect in the Mid-2020s.

BACKGROUND: Negative perceptions related to appearance, personality, and intelligence may exist among peers toward adolescents who use hearing aids. This phenomenon, known as the "hearing aid effect," may discourage adolescents from using their devices. Understanding peers' attitudes and perceptions is crucial for promoting social acceptance and developing educational programs that foster positive perceptions of hearing aid users. PURPOSE: This study aimed to examine adolescents' attitudes and perceptions toward peers using hearing aids and to investigate the relationship between adolescents'

Bullying Profiles and Co-Rumination: A Latent Transition Analysis in Adolescents.

Bullying during adolescence implies different forms of involvement that shape specific profiles, whose identification allows for understanding this phenomenon. However, it is essential to explore the mechanisms associated with the persistence or change of these profiles over time. Co-rumination may be crucial as a social-cognitive process in bullying development, reinforcing negative thought patterns among peers. The aim of this study was to examine involvement in bullying by identifying participation profiles and analyzing their longitudinal probability of stability or transition according to

"I learned how to dance in the rain": A case study of peer-supported recovery after readmission to a quaternary intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Survivors of intensive care often experience ongoing physical, cognitive, and psychological challenges, collectively referred to as post-intensive care syndrome. Peer support programs have emerged as interventions to assist patients and caregivers in navigating recovery, yet their impact on patients requiring repeated admissions to the intensive care unit (ICU) is not well understood. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe the experience of an individual who attended the Royal Adelaide Hospital's Survive and Thrive ICU peer support program following an initial ICU admission for severe bac

Bullying victimization, language proficiency, and school belonging among Syrian refugee early adolescents in Canada: A cross-lagged and random-intercept cross-lagged panel study.

Refugee children's school adjustment is often associated with host country language proficiency, peer victimization, and school belonging, but longitudinal associations among these constructs may reflect both stable child differences and time-varying school-experience processes. This three-wave longitudinal study examined English language proficiency, bullying victimization, and school belonging in 68 Syrian refugee children in Canada. We estimated a cross-lagged panel model (CLPM) and a random intercept cross-lagged panel model (RI-CLPM), both with family-clustered robust inference and contro

Maternal warmth and depressive symptoms in children: The mediating role of children's responses to positive affect and the moderating role of peer emotion regulation.

Although poor negative emotion regulation is a known risk factor for childhood depression, the potential role of positive emotion regulation-particularly in interaction with maternal warmth and peer socialization in Chinese cultural contexts-remains understudied. This study explored whether children's responses to positive affect may mediate the relationship between maternal warmth and depressive symptoms, and whether peer emotion regulation might moderates these pathways. Participants included 489 Chinese children (M age = 11.06 years, SD = 1.22; 51.7 % female) who completed self-report measu

Mapping experiences of workplace stigma and discrimination within the lived-living experience of illicit drug use and bloodborne virus peer workforce: a scoping review.

Peer workers with lived-living experience of illicit drug use and/or bloodborne viruses are critical in linking community with health services and programs. Despite the increasing demand for, and recognition of, the value and contributions of peer workers, the risk of workplace stigma and discrimination due to their lived-living experience remains a persistent issue. This scoping review aims to map available literature about workplace stigma and discrimination against peer workers with lived-living experience of drug use or bloodborne virus. The methods used in this scoping review were guided

Neural responses to peers moderate conversation-drinking associations in daily life.

Conversations shape future behaviors, particularly among young adults. However, young adults vary widely in their susceptibility to peer influence. What neural processes relate to this susceptibility? We examined whether activity in brain regions associated with social rewards and making sense of others' minds relates to a common health behavior-drinking, following conversations about alcohol. We studied ten social groups of college students (N = 104 students; 4760 total observations) across two university campuses. We collected whole-brain fMRI data while participants viewed photographs of pe
