Modulation Detection Interference (MDI) in listeners with cochlear hearing loss.

This study compared Modulation Detection Interference (MDI) in listeners with cochlear hearing loss and in listeners with normal hearing. The study was motivated by questions of temporal resolution in the listeners with cochlear hearing loss as well as by their general difficulty in monitoring target sounds in the presence of competing background noise. The first experiment was similar to the MDI paradigm of Yost and Sheft (1989) and showed an equivalence in performance between the two groups of listeners: MDI brought about by an interfering tone comodulated with the target tone at 10 Hz was a

Methylphenidate-induced information processing dysfunction in nonschizophrenic patients.

To examine the relationship of aminergic overactivity to information processing, we gave methylphenidate hydrochloride, oxazepam, or placebo to 12 nonpsychotic patients in one-week blocks in a double-blind, randomized design. Methylphenidate induced a pattern of information processing dysfunction similar to that seen in schizophrenic patients, strengthening the linkage of the schizophrenia-information processing dysfunction-aminergic overactivity relationship. Further, the time course of the observed deficits in both schizophrenic and methylphenidate-induced states is strikingly compatible wit

Effect of conductive hearing loss and middle ear surgery on binaural hearing.

This study investigated whether conductive hearing loss reduces normal binaural hearing advantages and whether binaural hearing advantages are normal in patients who have had hearing thresholds improved by middle ear surgery. Binaural hearing was assessed at a test frequency of 500 Hz using the masking level difference and interaural time discrimination thresholds. Results indicated that binaural hearing is often poor in conductive lesion patients and that the reduction in binaural hearing is not always consistent with a simple attenuation of the acoustic signal. Poor binaural hearing sometime

Central auditory tests and auditory nerve-brainstem evoked responses in multiple sclerosis.

In 43 multiple sclerosis (MS) patients and an equal number of age- and sex-matched normal controls, auditory nerve-brainstem evoked responses (ABR), audiometric tests, central auditory tests (CAT) and clinical-neurological examinations were conducted. The CAT included rapid alternating speech perception, masking level differences to tones and to words and lateralization based on interaural time and intensity differences. The results in the MS group on the ABR and each of the CAT differed significantly from those in the control group. The ABR results and the lateralization test results were eac

Effect of peripheral hearing loss on the masking level difference.

The effects of both symmetric and asymmetric peripheral hearing loss on the masking level difference (MLD) at 500 Hz were studied in 651 subjects with conductive or sensorineural hearing loss and 270 normal controls. The data supported the hypothesis that the modification in MLD due to peripheral hearing loss results from deterioration in threshold in the antiphasic condition. These results provide correction factors for the normal MLD range as functions of boundary frequency of sensorineural loss above 500 Hz and degree of both symmetric and asymmetric sensitivity loss at 500 Hz in both subje

The intelligibility of sentences in quiet and in noise in aged listeners.

The monaural speech-reception threshold (SRT) for sentences was investigated in quiet and under four noise conditions for 80 male subjects (age 60-90) and 30 female subjects (age 71-89). The noise levels used were 28, 43, 58, and 73 dBA. The noise had the long-term average spectrum of speech. It is shown that a model developed by Plomp [J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 63, 533-549 (1978)], which interprets any hearing loss for speech (SHL) as a combination of a loss of class A (attenuation of both speech and noise) and a loss of class D (distortion of the sound signals), enables one to make an accurate des

Speech discrimination in quiet and in white noise by patients with peripheral and central lesions.

Speech-discrimination scores in quiet and in white noise (O dB S/N ratio) were obtained from six groups of subjects. Differences of 40% or more between scores in quiet and in white noise were observed for less than 1% of the normal ears tested but were found for 8.0% of ears with noise trauma, 48% of ears with Meniere's disease, 62% of ears with subsequently surgically confirmed 8th-nerve tumors, 14% of ears of patients with multiple sclerosis, and 42% of ears contralateral to the lesion in patients with temporal-lobe damage.

Neuropsychological profile of Italian children and adolescents with 22q11.2 deletion syndrome with and without intellectual disability.

As individuals with chromosome 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) show a wide range of IQs, intellectual heterogeneity could mask the neuropsychological profile of the syndrome. This study was designed to identify specific neuropsychological features of children and adolescents with 22q11DS by taking into account the possible source of variability deriving from intellectual disability (ID). First, we compared several neuropsychological domains involving linguistic, visual-motor/visual-perceptual and memory abilities in 34 children and adolescents with 22q11DS and 83 mental age-matched typical

Measuring Spectrotemporal Sensitivity in Cochlear Implant Users With a Reaction-Time Paradigm: A Comparison of Two Implementations.

This study evaluated two implementations of a reaction-time paradigm to assess spectrotemporal modulation sensitivity in cochlear implant (CI) users, aiming to support both clinical and research applications. Reaction times directly reflect task difficulty, enabling rapid testing with stimuli presented well above modulation detection thresholds. Twenty unilateral CI users completed a task involving the unpredictable onset of broadband and narrowband spectrotemporal modulations embedded in noise. Testing was conducted using two implementations: an app on a smartphone with direct wireless stream

Effect of broadband and narrowband contralateral noise on psychophysical tuning curves and otoacoustic emissions.

The relative effectiveness of narrowband and broadband noises in activating the efferent system was assessed by comparing the effect of contralateral stimulation (CS) with such sounds on psychophysical tuning curves (PTCs) determined in simultaneous masking, using signal frequencies of 1000 or 2000 Hz. To check that the CS stimuli used did activate the efferent system, distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) were also measured in the absence and presence of narrowband and broadband CS. The CS had no consistent effect on the masker level at the tips of the PTCs. A broadband pink noise

Speech motor programming in apraxia of speech: evidence from a delayed picture-word interference task.

PURPOSE: Apraxia of speech (AOS) is considered a speech motor programming impairment, but the specific nature of the impairment remains a matter of debate. This study investigated 2 hypotheses about the underlying impairment in AOS framed within the Directions Into Velocities of Articulators (DIVA; Guenther, Ghosh, & Tourville, 2006) model: The retrieval hypothesis states that access to the motor programs is impaired, and the damaged programs hypothesis states that the motor programs themselves are damaged. METHOD: The experiment used a delayed picture-word interference paradigm in which part

Comparison of visual sensitivity to human and object motion in autism spectrum disorder.

Successful social behavior requires the accurate detection of other people's movements. Consistent with this, typical observers demonstrate enhanced visual sensitivity to human movement relative to equally complex, nonhuman movement [e.g., Pinto & Shiffrar, 2009]. A psychophysical study investigated visual sensitivity to human motion relative to object motion in observers with autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Participants viewed point-light depictions of a moving person and, for comparison, a moving tractor and discriminated between coherent and scrambled versions of these stimuli in unmasked a

Diagnosing cochlear dead regions in children.

OBJECTIVE: A dead region (DR) is defined as a region in the cochlea where inner hair cells and/or neurons are functioning so poorly that a tone producing peak vibration in this region is detected by off-frequency listening, i.e., via a place on the basilar membrane with a characteristic frequency different from that of the tone. The presence of a DR can have a significant effect on the perception of speech. People with and without DRs may differ in the benefit obtained from amplification and require different hearing aid settings. The Threshold Equalizing Noise (TEN) test and psychophysical tu

Effects of loss aversion on post-decision wagering: implications for measures of awareness.

Wagering contingent on a previous decision, or post-decision wagering, has recently been proposed to measure conscious awareness. Whilst intuitively appealing, it remains unclear whether economic context interacts with subjective confidence and how such interactions might impact on the measurement of awareness. Here we propose a signal detection model which predicts that advantageous wagers placed on the identity of preceding stimuli are affected by loss aversion, despite stimulus visibility remaining constant. This pattern of predicted results was evident in a psychophysical task where we ind

Information processing biases in spider phobia: application of the Stroop and "White Noise" Paradigm.

The present study examines attentional and implicit memory biases in spider phobic and nonphobic participants. The results showed that spider phobics demonstrated increased interference for neutral, negative, and spider-relevant words on a computerized Stroop task. However, no group differences emerged when adjusting for differences in color-naming speed. Prior exposure to a dead spider did result in higher overall Stroop interference in spider phobics and this appeared to be mostly pronounced for spider-relevant words. Implicit memory bias for threat was examined with a noise judgment task. P

Measures of auditory brain-stem responses, distortion product otoacoustic emissions, hair cell loss, and forward masked tuning curves in the waltzing guinea pig.

Measures of the auditory brain-stem response (ABR), distortion product otoacoustic emission (2f1-f2), hair cell loss, and forward masked tuning curves were obtained from waltzing guinea pigs and their age-matched controls at postnatal day 2, 9, 15, and 30. A mild ABR threshold shift (10-15 dB) is seen by 2 days postnatal and gradually increases to a more severe threshold shift (40-50 dB) by postnatal day 15. Already by 30 days the auditory brain-stem response, being beyond the output of the instrumentation, could not be elicited. The mean distortion product otoacoustic emission (DPOE) amplitud

Pharmacologic characterization of a nicotine-discriminative stimulus in rhesus monkeys.

This study examined mechanisms by which nicotine (1.78 mg/kg base s.c.) produces discriminative stimulus effects in rhesus monkeys. In addition to nicotine, various test compounds were studied including other nicotinic acetylcholine receptor agonists (varenicline and cytisine), antagonists [mecamylamine and the α4β2 receptor-selective antagonist dihydro-β-erythroidine (DHβE)], a nicotinic acetylcholine receptor antagonist/indirect-acting catecholamine agonist (bupropion), and non-nicotinics (cocaine and midazolam). Non-Auditory Participant Characteristics Influence Digit-Perception Performance: Evidence From Tasks Varying in Masker Type and Spatial Cues.

Digit-perception tasks are widely used to assess auditory function in clinical and research settings, but performance may also be shaped by non-auditory participant characteristics. This study examined whether educational attainment, forward digit span, socioeconomic deprivation, and musical experience predicted performance on three digit-perception tasks that differed in masker type and spatial demands: digits in speech-shaped noise (SSN), digits in spatially separated babble, and a spatial-selective-attention task in which digit streams were separated by 15°. Participants were 220 young adul

The relationship and interdependence of auditory thresholds, proposed behavioural measures of hidden hearing loss, and physiological measures of auditory function.

OBJECTIVES: Standard diagnostic measures focus on threshold elevation but hearing concerns may occur independently of threshold elevation - referred to as "hidden hearing loss" (HHL). A deeper understanding of HHL requires measurements that locate dysfunction along the auditory pathway. This study aimed to describe the relationship and interdependence between certain behavioural and physiological measures of auditory function that are thought to be indicative of HHL. DESIGN: Data were collected on a battery of behavioural and physiological measures of hearing. Threshold-dependent variance was

Effects of ipsilateral, contralateral, and bilateral noise precursors on psychoacoustical tuning curves in humans.

Cochlear tuning and hence auditory frequency selectivity are thought to change in noisy environments by activation of the medial olivocochlear reflex (MOCR). In humans, auditory frequency selectivity is often assessed using psychoacoustical tuning curves (PTCs), a plot of the level required for pure-tone maskers to just mask a fixed-level pure-tone probe as a function of masker frequency. Sometimes, however, the stimuli used to measure a PTC are long enough that they can activate the MOCR by themselves and thus affect the PTC. Here, PTCs for probe frequencies of 500 Hz and 4 kHz were measured
