INTRODUCTION: This study examined the effects of a 10-week yoga-integrated mind-body movement program embedded within routine mathematics instruction on elementary school students' problem-solving performance, computation skills, mathematics anxiety, and self-reported physical activity.
METHODS: A quasi-experimental design was employed with third-grade students assigned to either a yoga-integrated mathematics group or a traditional mathematics instruction group. Outcome measures included verbal problem-solving performance, computation skills, overall mathematics achievement, mathematics anxie

BACKGROUND: Despite the high prevalence of childhood adversity and well-documented associations with poor academic achievement and psychopathology, effective, scalable interventions remain largely unavailable. Existing interventions targeting growth mindset-the belief that personal characteristics are malleable-have been shown to improve academic achievement and symptoms of psychopathology in youth.
OBJECTIVE: The present study examines growth mindset as a potential modifiable mechanism underlying the associations of two dimensions of childhood adversity-threat and deprivation-with academic a

Paruresis is characterized by the fear of not being able to urinate in public bathrooms and has been classified by some to be a sub-type of social anxiety disorder (social phobia). Despite the existence of a consumer advocacy organization, the "Intentional Paruresis Association (www.paruresis.org)," there is sparse literature on this condition. A survey of people affiliated with the "International Paruresis Association" was undertaken using a self-report questionnaire with items that addressed demographic variables, the phenomenology of paruresis, comorbid disorders, and the impact of symptoms

OBJECTIVE: To investigate whether sluggish cognitive tempo (SCT) was associated with anxiety, depression, and academic performance (AP) in children with reading disorder (RD), and whether ADHD-Inattention (ADHD-IN) moderated these relationships.
METHOD: Parents and teachers of children with RD (N = 147, ages 6-18) completed evaluations of SCT, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and AP, every 3 months for 18 months. Baseline and longitudinal associations between SCT and outcomes, and effect moderation of ADHD-IN, were assessed.
RESULTS: Teacher-rated SCT was positively associated with teacher-rated a

Socially anxious college students are at increased risk for engaging in problematic drinking (i.e. heavy or risky drinking) behaviors that are associated with the development of an alcohol use disorder. The present study examined whether post-event processing (PEP), repeatedly thinking about and evaluating one's performance in a past social situation, strengthens the association between social anxiety and vulnerability to problematic drinking among college students. Eighty-three college drinkers with high or low social anxiety participated in a social interaction task and were exposed to a man

There is a need for brief, accurate screening scales for social anxiety disorder to enable better identification of the disorder in research and clinical settings. A five-item social anxiety screener, the Social Phobia Screener (SOPHS), was developed to address this need. The screener was validated in two samples: (a) 12,292 Australian young adults screened for a clinical trial, including 1,687 participants who completed a phone-based clinical interview and (b) 4,214 population-based Australian adults recruited online. The SOPHS (78% sensitivity, 72% specificity) was found to have comparable s

Social anxiety has been associated with biases in cognitive processing and deficits in social performances. Yet, it remains unclear if these variations may be partly attributable to deficits in fundamental social abilities: for example, social intelligence (SI). Using the Magdeburg Test of Social Intelligence (MTSI) as an objective and performance based SI measure, we examined the relationship between social anxiety and SI in a general population sample (N=110) using Structural Equation Modeling. Dimensions of social anxiety as postulated by Clark and Wells (1995) and facets of SI (social unde

BACKGROUND: Preoperative anxiety is a common challenge in paediatric anaesthesia. High anxiety levels are associated with adverse perioperative outcomes. Although risk factors for preoperative anxiety in children are well known, validated assessment tools are rarely used in everyday clinical practice. Instead, anaesthesiologists rely on clinical judgment during preoperative assessments. However, the accuracy of such anxiety predictions in clinical practice remains unclear. METHODS: This prospective observational study included children aged 7–12 years undergoing elective surgery or diagnostic

BACKGROUND: Disease trajectories of patients with anxiety disorders are highly diverse and approximately 60% remain chronically ill. The ability to predict disease course in individual patients would enable personalized management of these patients. This study aimed to predict recovery from anxiety disorders within 2 years applying a machine learning approach.
METHODS: In total, 887 patients with anxiety disorders (panic disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, agoraphobia, or social phobia) were selected from a naturalistic cohort study. A wide array of baseline predictors (N = 569) from five

Children with social anxiety disorder (SAD) often perceive their social performance more negatively than external observers, reinforcing negative self-appraisals. Cognitive models suggest a vicious cycle between such distortions and heightened anxiety. This study tested whether repeated exposure to a social-evaluative task, paired with brief, ecologically valid support strategies, improves self-appraisal in children with SAD compared to baseline without support. Participants were 76 children (SAD: n = 33, Mage = 11.73, SD = 1.46, 64% female; healthy controls [HC]: n = 43, Mage = 11.40, SD = 1.

(1) Background: Psychological parameters are relevant in the practice of judo. Previous studies have shown that parameters such as anxiety or motivation can have a negative or positive impact on the athlete's performance and general well-being, depending on the athlete's perception. This systematic review aimed to summarize the studies examining the influence of various psychological parameters on well-being and performance in judo athletes; (2) Methods: We followed preferred reporting elements for systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Vocational interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) fields in middle school can predict life outcomes, including enrollment in STEM courses and pursuing STEM careers. Numerical performance, as well as emotional factors such as math anxiety (MA), may influence vocational interests. The constructs of both vocational interests and MA are sensitive to gender differences. Accordingly, this study explored whether the relations among MA, numerical performance, and math vocational interests among middle-school students vary by gender. A sample of 127 ninth-grade students (68 femal

Theory of mind is an important skill to function in society. There is evidence that anxiety can impair the ability to use this skill effectively; however, current research is inconclusive, uses heterogeneous measures of theory of mind, and lacks distinction between anxiety types, despite these being known to present differently in clinical populations. False belief tasks are standard practice for assessing theory of mind in children and autistic participants and have also been found to adequately detect theory of mind differences in neurotypical adults yet are not systematically used throughou

Social anxiety-a fear of social interaction and negative evaluation-may be accompanied by heightened vigilance toward others' mental states, particularly those conveyed through gaze, as they provide cues about how one is being evaluated. We thus investigated whether individual differences in social anxiety predict neural sensitivity to the mental-state meanings conveyed by gaze patterns. Fifty-seven European American young adults varying in social anxiety viewed different gaze patterns, immediately followed by a mental-state word that was either congruent or incongruent with the culturally rec

Older adults are the largest population seeking neuropsychological assessment services. Anxiety has been shown to impact test scores, yet no anxiety measure currently exists specific to older adult neuropsychological assessment. This study piloted and validated the Feelings About Neuropsychological Testing measure (FANT), a measure of neuropsychological assessment anxiety developed to measure the cognitive, affective, and physiological aspects of test and state anxiety. The measure was validated on 105 community based older adults aged 55 and older. All participants were administered the FANT,

Test anxiety is a common emotional problem that often negatively affects academic performance. To examine the potential of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) in modulating neural inhibitory control efficiency in individuals with high test anxiety, this study investigated the intervention effects and underlying neural mechanisms. A total of 42 participants with high or low levels of test anxiety were recruited. Each participant received both active (anodal) and sham tDCS targeting the left dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC), while event-related potentials (ERPs) were recorded du

Daily life requires navigating uncertainty arising from external events and internal bodily sensations. Although uncertainty often elicits anxiety, individuals differ markedly in their sensitivity to it, a trait termed Intolerance of Uncertainty (IU). Across two studies, we examined how IU and alexithymia (difficulties identifying and describing emotions) mediate the links between interoceptive sensibility (self-reported awareness, attention, and appraisal concerning bodily sensations) and both anxiety and social cognition. In Study 1 (N = 190), participants completed questionnaires assessing
