Background. Peritonitis represents a major complication of peritoneal dialysis (PD). The aim of this paper was to systematically collect data on patient-related risk factors for PD-associated peritonitis, to analyze the methodological quality of these studies, and to summarize published evidence on the particular risk factors. Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is associated with functional and structural changes of the peritoneal membrane. In this review we describe factors contributing to peritoneal tissue remodeling, including uremia, peritonitis, volume loading, the presence of a catheter, and the PD fluid itself. Peritoneal involvement is a rare extrapulmonary manifestation of coccidioidomycosis. We report a patient with meningeal coccidioidomycosis who was found to have multiple, globular, peripherally enhancing deposits in the peritoneal cavity at abdominal computed tomography, raising the consideration of peritoneal malignancy. Aspiration biopsy demonstrated peritoneal coccidioidomycosis. The particular computed tomographic findings of peritoneal coccidioidomycosis seen in this patient have not been previously described.

Peritonitis is a severe illness with a high mortality rate and different treatment modalities. Over a time period of 12 years 510 patients with peritonitis treated with continuous peritoneal lavage (CPL) were retrospectively analyzed. 315 of 510 patients with a mean age of 57.4 and a mean APACHE-II-Score of 10.2 on admission had a diffuse four quadrant peritonitis. 195 had a local and diffuse peritonitis due to perforation of the appendix. 232 of 315 patients with diffuse peritonitis (73.7%) had a secondary peritonitis, mostly due to organ perforation. INTRODUCTION: Some thirty years ago peritoneal dialysis (PD) became a respectable modality of renal replacement therapy. That is why peritoneal membrane attracted interest of investigators. Certain changes, known as uremic serositis, appear in morphology of serous membranes in end stage kidney disease (ESKD). The aim of our investigation was to examine the morphology of peritoneal lining cells in control group of healthy persons and morphology of peritoneal lining cells in patients on PD.

A 19-year-old female on chronic peritoneal dialysis developed acute peritonitis; multiple peritoneal fluid and catheter tip cultures yielded Penicillium species. She promptly responded to catheter removal and intravenous amphotericin B, followed by oral fluconazole, without further recurrences 1 year later. This is the first reported case of Penicillium peritonitis in the pediatric population. We review the microbiology and clinical spectrum of this disease, as well as the few previous reported cases in adults.

The purpose of this study was to analyze the microbiological and clinical features of fungal peritonitis in patients with endstage renal failure treated with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). We report the case of a patient on dialysis for 13 years, including continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD) for 11 years, who developed sclerosing peritonitis with gross peritoneal calcification. We report the first three cases of peritonitis due to the fungus Coccidioides immitis occurring during continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). Prolonged postoperative peritoneal lavage has been used as a part of the management of 55 patients with diffuse peritonitis. The lavage technique consisted of 60 min cycles of instillation and drainage of a lavage fluid into the peritoneal cavity via a peritoneal dialysis catheter.
