The fifth edition of the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) includes within a section for emerging measures and models an alternative model of personality disorder (AMPD). This article provides a brief overview of its development, noting, in particular, issues and controversies. [Clinical dynamics of several constitutional psychopathies during the period of their development].

The authors outline the main regularities in the dynamics of the formation of constitutional psychopathy in childhood and adolescence on the models of epileptoid and schizoid psychopathy. Some age traits of psychopathical and psychogenic reactions and their role in the formation of constitutional psychopathy are discussed. The period of their formation is considered as psychopathic development, due to a complex interaction of constitutional anomalies of temperament, instincts and drives with the micro-socio-psychological environment.

Personal space regulation in childhood autism spectrum disorders.

People appropriately adjust the distance between themselves and others during social interaction, and they may feel discomfort and move away when another person intrudes on their personal space. In the present study, we investigated personal space in children with persistent difficulties in the domain of social behavior, such as children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and in children with typical development (TD). The stop-distance paradigm was used to derive estimates of interpersonal distance, before and after a brief interaction with an unfamiliar adult confederate. The results showe

The association between minority stressors, intraminority stressors, and borderline personality disorder symptomatology among sexual minority men.

Sexual minority men are more likely to be diagnosed with borderline personality disorder compared to their heterosexual counterparts. Minority stressors have been associated with criteria for borderline personality disorder (e.g., substance use, suicidality, impulsive behaviors, and interpersonal difficulties with rejection). However, to date, there are no known studies examining the association between traditional minority and intraminority stressors and borderline personality disorder symptomatology. The purpose of the study is to examine the association between traditional and intraminority

Panic attacks and the risk of personality disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study is to determine the association between panic attacks in adolescence and the risk of personality disorders during young adulthood. METHOD: Data were drawn from the Children in the Community Study, a longitudinal epidemiological study of psychopathology across the life-course in 717 individuals in the community. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to determine the association between panic attacks during adolescence in 1983 and the risk of personality disorders during young adulthood in 1993, adjusting for differences in sociodemographic characteri

Blood-Based Metabolomic Biomarkers and Personality Traits in Major Depressive Disorder: Toward an Integrated Framework for Precision Psychiatry.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a heterogeneous condition influenced by biological, psychological, and cultural factors. Recent blood-based metabolomic studies have identified alterations in pathways such as the tricarboxylic acid cycle, γ-aminobutyric acid, and the tryptophan-kynurenine axis, which are associated with depressive states, suicidality, and treatment response. In parallel, personality traits-particularly high neuroticism and low extraversion-have been shown to shape vulnerability, symptom presentation, and therapeutic outcomes. Combining personality assessment with metabolomic

Personality as a predictor of unprotected sexual behavior among people living with HIV/AIDS: a systematic review.

The present investigation involved a systematic literature review to (1) identify associations between personality constructs and unprotected sex among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWH); (2) assess patterns of direct versus indirect personality-risky sex associations; and (3) explore possible differences in personality-risky sex associations among PLWH versus non-infected populations. Among the 26 studies yielded through the systematic search, sensation seeking and sexual compulsivity were the constructs most frequently examined, with fewer studies investigating traditional personality typolo

Psychopathology, childhood trauma, and personality traits in patients with borderline personality disorder and their sisters.

The aim of this study was to document and compare adverse childhood experiences, and personality profiles in women with borderline personality disorder (BPD) and their sisters, and to determine how these factors impact current psychopathology. Fifty-six patients with BPD and their sisters were compared on measures assessing psychopathology, personality traits, and childhood adversities. Most sisters showed little evidence of psychopathology. Both groups reported dysfunctional parent-child relationships and a high prevalence of childhood trauma. Subjects with BPD reported experiencing more emot

Personality features of women with good outcome from restricting anorexia nervosa.

Personality characteristics were assessed in women who had physically and, in the majority, psychologically recovered from restricting anorexia nervosa at an 8- to 10-year follow-up. Personality dimensions were evaluated using the Multidimensional Personality Questionnaire, the California Personality Inventory, and the Reid-Ware Scale. Women who had recovered from anorexia nervosa rated higher on risk avoidance, displayed greater restraint in emotional expression and initiative, and showed greater conformance to authority than age-matched normal women. On comparison with their sisters, the rec

[The main directions of research on the causes conditioning the occurrence of the borderline personality disorders].

Currently, there are two main directions of explaining the occurrence of the borderline personality disorders (BPD). The first of them attempts to explain them upon the constitutional basis, finding the causes in the genetic conditioning, biological and organic factors. The other one underline a role of the psychological developmental categories. A significant role is ascribed to traumatic childhood mental experiences such as: harassment and sexual abuse, as well as neglect of emotional and developmental needs of a child. About 40-71% of the infirm with the borderline personality admits to hav

The mediating role of social anxiety in the association between personality traits and Internet addiction and its underlying neural basis.

Social anxiety (SA) is one of the most prevalent mental health problems in young adults. The significance of personality traits on the development of SA and the influence of SA on Internet addiction (IA) were increasingly emphasized. However, no studies yet have simultaneously examined the relationships among SA, personality traits, and IA, especially the role of SA and its underlying neural basis in the association between personality traits and IA. Therefore, this study was designed to address this question using behavioral and resting-state functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (fMRI) measu

Readiness and Personality Disorders: Considering Patients' Readiness for Change and Our System's Readiness for Patients.

The culture around personality disorder treatment has changed drastically in the past generation. While once perceived as effectively untreatable, there are now numerous evidence-based treatment approaches for personality disorders (especially borderline personality disorder). The questions, however, of who should be matched to which treatment approach, and when, remain largely unanswered. In other areas of psychiatry, particularly substance use disorders and eating disorders, assessing patient treatment readiness is viewed as indispensable for treatment planning. Despite this, relatively litt

The relationship between childhood adversity and adult personality revealed by network analysis.

BACKGROUND: Childhood adversity is known to influence personality development. Studies suggest that distinct types of childhood adversities have differential effects on personality dimensions. However, different types of adversity often co-occur, and personality dimensions are strongly interconnected. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to use a network approach to analyze the interrelationships between different types of childhood adversity and diverse personality dimensions integratively. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: We used previously collected data on 142 alcohol dependent patients and 102…

Typus melancholicus personality type and the five-factor model of personality.

Personality traits are significant factors in the development and course of depression. Apart from the classical five-factor model of personality, other personality constellations, such as Tellenbach's Typus melancholicus, have been described in association with depressive disorder. Several instruments have been developed to assess the Typus melancholicus personality (TMP). A systematic comparison of these instruments has not been done to date. The goal of this study was the comparison of four questionnaires used in assessing TMP. Four TMP questionnaires were compared and their relationship to

Neighbourhood characteristics and the treated incidence rate of borderline personality pathology among young people.

OBJECTIVE: The impact of the wider social environment, such as neighbourhood characteristics, has not been examined in the development of borderline personality disorder. This study aimed to determine whether the treated incidence rate of full-threshold borderline personality disorder and sub-threshold borderline personality disorder, collectively termed borderline personality pathology, was associated with the specific neighbourhood characteristics of social deprivation and social fragmentation. METHOD: This study included young people, aged 15-24 years, who attended Orygen's Helping Young P

Association of dopamine receptor gene polymorphism and psychological personality traits in liability for opioid addiction.

There is a clear evidence that same psychoactive substance may cause various individual physiological reactions in same environmental conditions. Although there is a general attitude on equal liability to opioid addiction, latest genetic analysis findings imply there are certain quantifiable factors that could lead to elevated individual liability towards development of opioid addiction. The goal of this study was to investigate association of certain personality traits and genetic factors (separately and in combination) with heroin addiction. Total of 200 individuals participated in the study

[Childhood trauma in the etiology of borderline personality disorder].

Serious, prolonged intrafamilial childhood sexual abuse is considered to be the main etiological factor in about half of the patients with borderline personality disorder in the USA. Special features of childhood interpersonal trauma leading to the development of borderline personality disorder are the seriousness of the trauma and the fact that it is sexual in nature. Serious intrafamilial childhood abuse can lead not only to the classic post-traumatic stress syndrome, but can influence all aspects of personality development, including the distortion of the sense of identity, self-regulation,…

[Organic personality disorder. Conceptual and diagnostic aspects].

INTRODUCTION: Probably the commonest neuropsychiatric sequela in persons who have had some type of cerebral lesion (of whatever origin) are the complaints of changes in the personality of the patient prior to the lesion which cause problems with the family, socially and at work. These problems have been grouped together under the same diagnosis in current psychiatric nosology called 'organic personality disorder'. DEVELOPMENT: In this article we wish to point out the disadvantages due to this diagnosis which have a double origin. Firstly, it is based on the concept of personality, which has b

Personality and Nomophobia: The Role of Dysfunctional Obsessive Beliefs.

BACKGROUND: The development of new technologies (ICTs), and specifically the invention of smartphones, has offered users enormous benefits. However, the use of this technology is sometimes problematic and can negatively affect people's lives. Nomophobia has been defined as the fear of being unreachable by means of a smartphone and is considered a disorder of the modern world. The present study aims to provide additional evidence of the relationship between personality traits and nomophobia. Moreover, this research explores dysfunctional obsessive beliefs as another possible antecedent. Finally
