Behavioural thermoregulation is critical for reptiles, because it allows them to maintain their body temperatures within a range that optimizes physiological functions. Behavioural thermoregulation requires sensing, processing, and retaining information on the thermal environment, potentially involving several cognitive processes. Surprisingly, the relationship between cognitive performance and thermoregulatory behaviour and accuracy has hitherto remained virtually unstudied. Here we examined whether enhanced spatial cognition is correlated with more efficient thermoregulation, while also taki

OBJECTIVE: Although psychological issues are not diagnostic criteria for functional neurological disorder (FND), they often occur among individuals with FND, especially among those with functional seizures. However, corresponding findings for individuals with functional motor disorder (FMD) are inconclusive.
METHODS: Thirty individuals with FMD and 30 age-, education-, and sex-matched healthy control (HC) individuals completed the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory-2. The authors used the test's 10 basic clinical scales and its 15 content scales along with their subscales to explore

The primary aim of this study was to examine the personality profile of adults with Specific Learning Disorders (SLDs) using the Personality Inventory for DSM-5 (PID-5) to assess maladaptive traits and explore the underlying network structure of these traits in comparison to healthy individuals. The sample included 181 adults with SLDs (mean age = 27.37 ± 6.82; 39.21% female) and 227 healthy adults (mean age = 30.08 ± 7.49; 35.36% female). All participants completed the PID-5 and a socio-demographic checklist. Group differences in PID-5 scores were analyzed using independent-sample t-tests. Ne

BACKGROUND: Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a major psychiatric disorder with unclear etiology and biological diagnosis. Paranoid personality disorder (PPD) is a type-A personality disorder characterized by paranoia and generalized mistrust. The etiology and molecular mechanisms of SCZ and PPD are not clarified. The present study aimed to examine the expression alteration of three major genes of mitochondrial complex I in the peripheral blood of patients with SCZ and PPD, and its correlations with clinical features of patients, especially the five major personality traits.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This

The hypothesis of the psychosis continuum enables to study the mechanisms of psychosis risk not only in clinical samples but in non-clinical as well. The aim of this longitudinal study was to investigate self-disturbances (SD), a risk factor that has attracted substantial interest over the last two decades, in combination with trauma, cognitive biases and personality, and to test whether SD are associated with subclinical positive symptoms (PS) over a 12-month follow-up period. Our study was conducted in a non-clinical sample of 139 Polish young adults (81 females, age M = 25.32, SD = 4.51) wh

AIMS: Ideal cardiovascular health has been defined by the American Heart Association as the absence of disease and the presence of seven key health factors and behaviours. However, little is known about the mental aspects associated with ideal cardiovascular health metrics. The objective of this study was to assess the relationships between psychosocial risk factors and ideal cardiovascular health metrics among Finnish women at municipal work units.
METHOD: A cross-sectional study was conducted in Finland among 732 female employees (mean±SD age 48±10 years) from ten work units in 2014. Ideal

BACKGROUND: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is the most prevalent personality disorder and can significantly impair patients' functioning. Evidence-based treatments exist, but can be inaccessible due to various limitations. Internet-delivered treatment could potentially increase accessibility and scalability. Before investigating patients, we planned a pilot-test of video-conferencing group schema therapy (VC-GST) as self-therapy for therapists in training.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to assess the feasibility of VC-GST for therapists in training. We hypothesised VC-GST to be a feasible

Bias is said to occur when validity is better for one group than another (e.g., when diagnoses are more valid for male or female clients). This article provides (a) a methodological critique of studies on race bias and gender bias in diagnosis and (b) a narrative review of results from studies with good internal validity. The results suggest that race bias occurs for the diagnosis of conduct disorder, antisocial personality disorder, comorbid substance abuse and mood disorders, eating disorders, posttraumatic stress disorder, and the differential diagnosis of schizophrenia and psychotic affect

BACKGROUND: Hypochondriac concerns are associated with the treatment-difficulty of bipolar disorder, which might be due to the personality styles and affective states.
METHODS: We invited outpatients with bipolar I disorder (BD I, n = 87), bipolar II disorder (BD II, n = 92) and healthy volunteers (n = 129) to undergo the Illness Attitude Scales and Parker Personality Measure tests, and measurements of concurrent affective states.
RESULTS: Compared to healthy volunteers, BD I and BD II patients scored significantly higher on mania, hypomania and depression. BD I and BD II patients also score

Schizophrenia has been associated with premorbid poor educational performance and low educational attainment (EA). However, some studies have found positive associations between psychotic disorders and excellent scholastic performance. In the present study, we examined the association between EA and several clinical and nonclinical characteristics in psychiatric patients diagnosed with psychotic or bipolar disorders. Data were obtained from the files of 1132 patients who entered a major Mexico City psychiatric hospital during the years 2009-2010 for the treatment of psychotic symptoms and who

Low vagal tone may represent a mediating mechanism for relationships between personality and symptoms of functional dyspepsia (FD) through a mechanism of antral hypomotility. Twenty-one patients with FD and seventeen healthy controls completed a series of personality tests before vagal and sympathetic activity, antral motility, and abdominal symptoms were assessed in response to a laboratory task. Functional dyspepsia patients had lower scores on vagal tone (p = .054) and motility index (p = .011) in addition to the expected higher scores on epigastric discomfort (p = .002). Psychological fact…

Background and aims Burning mouth syndrome (BMS) and atypical facial pain (AFP) are often persistent idiopathic pain conditions that mainly affect middle-aged and elderly women. They have both been associated with various psychiatric disorders. This study examined current and lifetime prevalence of psychiatric axis I (symptom-based) and II (personality) disorders in patients with chronic idiopathic orofacial pain, and investigated the temporal relationship of psychiatric disorders and the onset of orofacial pain. Method Forty patients with BMS and 23 patients with AFP were recruited from Turku

OBJECTIVE: The main aim of this study involves comparing the personality profiles of patients with medication-overuse headache (MOH) and episodic headaches, in order to elucidate the role of personality characteristics, according to one of the most widely used and validated personality assessment tool: Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory (MMPI-2).
BACKGROUND: Many studies have assessed the personality of headache patients by means of MMPI-2 only using clinical and content scales. In this study the supplementary scales were also used as they evaluate different aspects of personality, p

The purpose of the study was to test the hypothesis that borderline personality disorder (BPD) and its underlying traits are associated with abnormalities in neurotransmitter systems. Subjects were 30 women with BPD and 22 normal controls, assessed using the Diagnostic Interview for Borderlines, revised, the Hamilton Depression Scale (HAM-A) and the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (HAM-A), the Diagnostic Assessment of Personality Pathology, the Buss-Durkee Guilt-Hostility Inventory, the Barratt Impulsivity Scale (BIS), and challenge tests to measure serotonergic, cholinergic and noradrenergic activity.

Bentall & Thompson (1990) selected participants on the basis of high, medium and low scores on the Hypomanic Personality Scale. In an emotional Stroop test, the high hypomanic participants showed interference of colour naming for depression-related but not euphoria-related words. The current study tests the hypothesis that the effects found were mediated by anxiety, and not hypomania as claimed. Bentall & Thompson's study was repeated but measures of state of trait anxiety were also taken. When analysis was restricted to three subgroups selected in the same manner as in Bentall & Thompson's (1

Research utilizing psychometric instruments to assess personality characteristics of sex offenders is reviewed. A methodological shortcoming of this research is the frequent use of the MMPI. It is argued that this test was originally developed as a measure of types of psychopathology and has not been validated as a personality test. Studies using tests other than the MMPI have seldom controlled for institutionalization and impression management. Further, little attention has been paid to criminal history, making it difficult to conclude that the current offense is representative of past behavi

Two hundred fifteen randomly accessed cancer patients who were new admissions to three collaborating cancer centers were examined for the presence of formal psychiatric disorder. Each patient was assessed in a common protocol via a psychiatric interview and standardized psychological tests. The American Psychiatric Association's DSM-III diagnostic system was used in making the diagnoses. Results indicated that 47% of the patients received a DSM-III diagnosis, with 44% being diagnosed as manifesting a clinical syndrome and 3% with personality disorders. Approximately 68% of the psychiatric diag

Measures of personality and psychological distress are correlated and exhibit genetic covariance. We conducted univariate genome-wide SNP (~2.5 million) and gene-based association analyses of these traits and examined the overlap in results across traits, including a prediction analysis of mood states using genetic polygenic scores for personality. Measures of neuroticism, extraversion, and symptoms of anxiety, depression, and general psychological distress were collected in eight European cohorts (n ranged 546-1,338; maximum total n = 6,268) whose mean age ranged from 55 to 79 years. Psychological factors may play a role in asthma. In particular, emotional upsets have been correlated with fatal asthma attacks, and an abnormal personality attitude is considered to be a risk factor in fatal asthma. Moreover, some authors have recently reported favourable asthma outcome in patients with severe asthma and psychiatric abnormalities, when psychoactive treatment was initiated. On the understanding that people with fatal and "near fatal asthma" (NFA) are components of the same subset of the asthmatic population, we undertook a study aimed at assessing the importance of personality
