Optic nerve disc veins inflammation (papillophlebitis) - case report.

Papillophlebitis is an uncommon disease in clinical practice. We would like to present a case of a 29-year-old patient with atypical orbital pain and flashings, presenting relative afferent pupillary defect and already typical of the disease entity: ophthalmoscopic picture of the fundus and big blind spot in perimetry. We present a complex and interdisciplinary diagnostic process that excludes general diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, coagulation disorders and neurological causes. We leave the only identifiable abnormality and potential source in the inflammatory process of periodontal …

A case of silent perforated diverticulitis in the ascending colon combined with pylephlebitis resulting in complete occlusion of the portal trunk.

A case of silent perforated diverticulitis in the ascending colon combined with pylephlebitis, resulting in complete occlusion of the portal trunk, is presented. A 75-year-old man with no relevant medical history visited our hospital complaining of a fever, which had lasted for 2 weeks. Although his laboratory data were indicative of severe inflammation, an abdominal examination and a computed tomography (CT) scan did not produce any significant findings. On the 6th day after admission, an abdominal CT scan detected a thrombus extending from the superior mesenteric vein to the portal vein, but…

[Prevention of venous thrombosis: role of heparins].

Prevention of venous thromboembolism is of major importance because deep vein thrombosis is an economic burden. To prevent pulmonary embolism, whether fatal or not, and the postphlebitic syndrome, virtually all patients' level of risk should be assessed in order to provide adequate prophylactic measures against venous thromboembolism. Non-pharmacological, pharmacological or combined modalities can reduce the frequency of venous thrombosis. Evidence-based guidelines are available for most situations in surgical patients. However, in medical patients there are fewer data and there are wide varia

Doppler C.W. study of the lower limb venous hemodynamics during pregnancy and prevention of thrombotic complications.

Thirty-two women (14 primiparae and 18 multiparae) were submitted to clinical and ultrasound investigations during the 1st, 2nd and 3rd quarter of pregnancy and after childbirth, for the evaluation of the lower limb venous system. An increase of the venous pressure in the standing position was present in all the women during the last quarter of pregnancy. In 14 cases varices (6 primiparae, 8 multiparae) with incontinence of the saphenous-femoral valve in 10 (3 primiparae, 7 multiparae), were detected during pregnancy. In these patients a compressive bandage associated, in selected cases, to ca

The first are primarily expressed by erythema nodosu … s are the clinical expression of an affliction of the hypodermic vessels, and of a migratory thrombophlebitis, betraying the subjacent venous alterations. The different inflammatory lesions must be distinguished from panniculitis, which is marked by a preferential attack of the adipose tissue. Investigation of the roles of fascioliasis and food allergy in intrahepatic eosinophilic proliferative pylephlebitis in Japanese Black cattle.

Intrahepatic eosinophilic proliferative pylephlebitis (EPP) in Japanese Black (JB) cattle generally has been considered to be an atypical form of fascioliasis. However, there are many cases of EPP in which no Fasciola spp. have been detected in the livers of affected cattle. The aims of this study were to ascertain the relationship between EPP and hepatic fascioliasis and to investigate the role of food allergy in the disease. Histologically, EPP lesions were characterised by severe endothelial proliferation of the interlobular veins, accompanied by varying degrees of fibrosis and eosinophilic…

Ocular findings in cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita. Bilateral exudative vitreoretinopathy.

BACKGROUND: Cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita is a rare, cutaneous, reticulated, vascular anomaly characterized by congenital persistent cutis marmorata, telangiectasis, and phlebectasis. While systemic abnormalities frequently are associated with cutis marmorata telangiectatica congenita, ophthalmic abnormalities are quite rare and include congenital glaucoma and congenital, bilateral, total retinal detachments with secondary glaucoma. METHODS: The authors report a case of bilateral, tractional retinal detachments associated with peripheral fibrovascular proliferation simulating fami

Mondor's disease of the breast resulting from jellyfish sting.

OBJECTIVE: To present two cases of Mondor's disease of the breast resulting from jellyfish stings in Western Australia. CLINICAL FEATURES: A 30-year-old Caucasian woman presented with a palpable thickened cord in her right breast. The straightness of the cord suggested a thrombosed lymphatic. A 50-year-old Caucasian woman presented with an obvious palpable cord extending most of the length of her left breast. Mammography demonstrated no abnormality. Both women reported having been stung by jellyfish a month earlier. INTERVENTION AND OUTCOME: As Mondor's disease is a benign, self-limiting dis

Arteritis and venulitis in systemic lupus erythematosus resulting in massive lower intestinal haemorrhage.

A case of systemic lupus erythematosus with massive haemorrhage from the colon is described. Histological examination showed ulceration of the mucosa of the ascending colon with necrotizing vasculitis of the submucosal veins. Adjacent arteries were normal apart from one which had ruptured on the surface of an ulcer. This is the first clearly documented case of colonic venulitis in systemic lupus erythematosus and the differential diagnosis of gastrointestinal haemorrhage in this disease is discussed.
