Serological markers of sand fly exposure to evaluate insecticidal nets against visceral leishmaniasis in India and Nepal: a cluster-randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: Visceral leishmaniasis is the world' second largest vector-borne parasitic killer and a neglected tropical disease, prevalent in … y biting by measuring the antibody response of subjects to the saliva of Leishmania donovani vector Phlebotomus argentipes and the sympatric (non-vector) Phlebotomus papatasi. Fifteen to 20 individuals above 15 years of age from 26 VL endemic clusters were asked to provide a blood sample at baseline, 12 and 24 months post-intervention. RESULTS: A total of 30 …

Host preferences of phlebotomine sand flies at a hypoendemic focus of canine leishmaniasis in central Italy.

A survey was carried out on phlebotomine sand flies and their feeding habits at a hypoendemic focus of Leishmania infantum in Macerata province, central Italy. During two consecutive years (2000-2001), 1465 sand fly specimens (42.5% of which were males) were collected from a variety of diurnal resting sites in the municipality of Camerino. The most prevalent species was Phlebotomus perniciosus (76.6%), followed by P. papatasi (10.4%), Sergentomyia minuta (9.1%), Phlebotomus perfiliewi (3.3%) and P. mascittii (0.5%). Among the 842 females collected, 578 (68.6%) were blood-fed. Based on the resu…

A neglected among the neglected: a review of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Guatemala.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a parasitic vector-borne disease affecting mostly low- and middle-income countries. CL is endemic in Guatemala, where an increase in the number of cases and incidence and a changing disease distribution in the past decade have been reported. Important research was conducted in Guatemala in the 1980s and 1990s to understand the epidemiology of CL and two Leishmania species were identified as the aetiologic agents. Several species of sand flies have been reported, five of which are naturally infected with Leishmania. Clinical trials conducted in the country evalua

Burden and risk factors of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Ethiopia: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) is a major public health problem in Ethiopia. About 30 million people are at risk, and there are 20,000 to 50,000 new cases annually. It is maintained by rock hyraxes and Phlebotomus sand flies. Different studies showed the presence and risk factors of CL. However, there is no study on the pooled prevalence and risk factors. This study aimed to determine the pooled prevalence and risk factors of CL in Ethiopia. METHOD: We retrieved published articles from different databases. The review was conducted based on PRISMA guidelines. The meta-analysis was …

Novel and emergent sandfly-borne phleboviruses in Asia Minor: a systematic review.

Sandfly-transmitted phleboviruses are globally spread agents causing febrile diseases and central nervous system infections. The activity of pathogenic phleboviruses, as well as several novel strains, has been reported from Turkey, a transboundary country connecting Asia, Europe, and Africa with suitable habitats for sandflies. This study overviews all published data on phleboviruses from Turkey and evaluates the impact from the virological, epidemiological, and public health perspectives. A systematic review of Web-based global and local resources was performed. Comparison and phylogenetic an

Ultrastructural features of the midgut epithelium of females Lutzomyia intermedia (Lutz & Neiva, 1912) (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae).

A morphological study of the midgut of Lutzomyia intermedia, the primary vector of cutaneous leishmaniasis, in southeast Brazil, was conducted by light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The midgut is formed by a layer of epithelium of columnar cells on a non-cellular basal lamina, under which there is a musculature, which consists of circular and longitudinal muscular fibers. A tracheolar network is observed surrounding and penetrating in the musculature. Females were examined 12, 24, 48, 72 h and 5 days following a blood meal and were analyzed comparatively by transmission elect

[Evaluation of the effectiveness of deltamethrin (K-othrine CE) in the control of Lutzomyia longipalpis (Diptera: Psychodidae), in the municipality of Santa Rita, Paraíba, Brazil].

Deltamethrin in emulsion concentrate was applied in doses of 12.5, 25.0 and 50.0mg/m2, in households near the littoral of the State of Paraíba, where sporadic cases of visceral leishmaniasis were reported. There was a remarkable decrease in populations of several arthropods, including Lutzomyia longipalpis. This insect, however, was found again in some treated walls, 14 and 21 days after spraying. Statistical analysis indicated significant control for only two four-weeks periods, with extreme irregularity in the quantity captured.

[Ecologic aspects of American tegumentary leishmaniasis. 5. Stratification of the spatial and seasonal activities of Phlebotominae (Diptera, Psychodidae) in areas of agricultural culture of the Vale do Ribeira region, State of São Paulo, Brazil].

This paper deals with the investigation on the composition and stratification of the Phebotominae activity developed in patch and clear areas of high agricultural activity. The employment of a CDC light trap proved to be a useful tool in determining the local faune. Thirteen species of sandflies and a total of 5,423 individuals were caught. The catch places situated in the ecotone were the ones in which the results reached their best, being outstanding for Psychodopygus intermedius, Lutzomyia migonei and L. fischeri. Thereby, data lead us to believe they have acrodendrophilous habit. On the ot

[Successful treatment of cutaneous leishmaniasis with amphotericin B; a case of unresponsive to pentavalent antimony therapy].

Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL) is a skin infection caused by various species of Leishmania parasites, which is transmitted by infected Phlebotomus sandfly bites. Pentavalent antimonials (meglumine antimoniate and sodium stibogluconate) are used for the treatment of adult CL patients as an effective and safe method. Liposomal amphotericin B is an alternative for the treatment of choice in cutaneous leishmaniasis cases which pentavalan antimony contraindicated or unresponsive to pentavalent antimony therapy. In this study, successful treatment with systemic liposomal amphotericin B of a cutaneous …

Sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae) in the Bar area of Montenegro (Yugoslavia).

The species and ecology of sandflies present in the coastal district of Bar, which lies in Montenegro, an endemic focus of visceral leishmaniasis (VL), were investigated in 1996-1999. A mean of 10 cases of VL and a greater number of viral infections (some of which are attributed to pathogens transmitted by sandflies) are diagnosed each year in this district. Phlebotomus papatasi, P. perfiliewi, P. tobbi, P. neglectus and Sergentomyia minuta were collected, P. perfiliewi being recorded for the first time in Montenegro. The ecology and distribution of each of these five species are described and…

Hunger tolerance and Leishmania in sandflies.

The sandfly Phlebotomus papatasi transmits Leishmania major, the agent of cutaneous leishmaniasis, in desert and savannah regions of the Old World, where seasonal stress of dehydration and heat reduces the quantity of sugar in plant leaves. Without essential sugar, only a few flies that feed on leaves can survive for long enough to deposit eggs and transmit Leishmania. Accordingly, selection for hunger tolerance may also select for pathogen susceptibility in flies. Here we provide evidence of a link between these advantageous and costly properties by testing the susceptibility of flies selecte…

Flies and myiasis.

Many species of flies cause insect bites. The Lutzomyia and Phlebotomus flies, which carry leishmaniasis, and the Simulium flies, which carry onchocerciasis, have the greatest impact. Fly larvae, or maggots, can be used to cleanse necrotic debris from a wound. Although repulsive, this may be effective. Some larvae are obligatory parasites of warm-blooded animals and sometimes of man. These must burrow into the flesh in order to develop. Screwworms cause great problems for livestock and, rarely, for man. Dermatobia hominis is the most common such parasite seen in the United States. Infection wi…

Cutaneous leishmaniasis caused by Leishmania major in Baringo District, Kenya.

Leishmania major was isolated from lesions of a patient suffering from cutaneous leishmaniasis in Baringo District of Kenya. Isoenzyme mobilities of this strain were compared with those of L. major, L. donovani, L. aethiopica and L. tropica reference strains and also L. major from a sand fly, Phlebotomus duboscqi, and a rodent, Arvicanthis niloticus, trapped in the same region. The patient's isolate had similar banding patterns to the L. major reference strain and also the rodent and the sand fly strains with the 9 enzymes examined. This is the first report in Kenya of an indigenous case with …

[Cutaneous leishmaniasis in Germany-still a travel-related disease].

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is an infectious disease caused by several Leishmania species. It is transmitted to humans by the bite of the infected female phlebotomus sandfly. Today, more than 1 billion people in leishmaniasis endemic areas are at risk of infection. More than 1.5 million new cases of cutaneous leishmaniasis occur every year. On the basis of two cases, we show that cutaneous leishmaniasis is still an imported tropical disease in Germany. However, due to the increasing intercontinental travel, cases may increase. Therefore, cutaneous leishmaniasis should be considered in the differen…

Cutaneous Leishmania aethiopica diagnosed in the United States.

Cutaneous leishmaniasis is a parasitic infection caused by certain Leishmania spp and is endemic in the New world (Central and South America) and Old World (Africa and the Middle East) where it is transmitted via sandflies of the Phlebotomus and Lutzomyia species. We describe a case of a 61-year-old woman who presented with an asymptomatic red-brown papule on her lower back approximately one year after returning to the United States from a trip to Ethiopia and Cameroon. Polymerase chain reaction was performed on the biopsy material and identified Leishmania aethiopica. This case highlights an …

In the autumn of '94 we saw 32 patients with cutaneous leishmaniasis from a newly populated areas south of Yerucham. Yerucham had never previously been reported as a focus of leishmaniasis. Ongoing construction in the town and the health hazards that resulted may play a part in this new situation. There are a number of ways of controlling and preventing outbreaks leishmaniasis. They include elimination of the vector, Phlebotomus and its host, the gerbils as well as their food supply, "maloach" bushes, other health hazards and vaccination of the population. Patients were treated according to th…
