Anomalous Magnetic Hysteresis up to 20 K in a Non-Kramers Light-Lanthanide Single-Molecule Magnet.

Light-lanthanides (Ln), despite their widespread uses in commercial permanent magnets, are among the least explored metal elements as building blocks of single-molecule magnets (SMMs) due to their smaller magnetic moments as well as weaker spin-orbit couplings than those of the heavy-Ln counterparts, and so far, only a neodymium (Nd) complex has been reported showing a small magnetic hysteresis at 2 K. Here, we report a low-coordination praseodymium (Pr) complex, namely, Pr@C81N, featuring a non-Kramers trivalent Pr ion entrapped within an azafullerene cage and behaving as the first Pr-based S

Emerging supersolidity in photonic-crystal polariton condensates.

A supersolid is a counter-intuitive phase of matter in which its constituent particles are arranged into a crystalline structure, yet they are free to flow without friction. This requires the particles to share a global macroscopic phase while being able to reduce their total energy by spontaneous, spatial self-organization. The existence of the supersolid phase of matter was speculated more than 50 years ago1-4. However, only recently has there been convincing experimental evidence, mainly using ultracold atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) coupled to electromagnetic fields. There, variou

In depth first-principles investigation of phase stability, structural, vibrational, electronic, elastic, piezoelectric, and magnetic properties in vanadium-based janus dichalcogenide monolayer VBrSe.

CONTEXT: This study presents a comprehensive first-principles investigation of the structural, electronic, vibrational, elastic, and piezoelectric properties of monolayer Janus VBrSe in both 2H and 1 T phases. The 1 T phase is found to be dynamically unstable, whereas the 2H-VBrSe phase is confirmed to be both energetically favorable and dynamically stable, indicating its feasibility for experimental synthesis. The 2H phase exhibits a direct band gap with pronounced strain sensitivity, significant out-of-plane piezoelectric response, and distinct Raman-active vibrational modes, facilitating ph

Formation Mechanism of BN Flakes on MWCNTs.

A novel heterostructured hexagonal-boron nitride (h-BN) flake-coating on multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT/BN) is reported and synthesized by chemical vapor deposition (CVD). Comprehensive characterization using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS), revealed the atomic structure and growth mechanism, which is further validated by molecular dynamics simulations. The resulting MWCNT/BN structure comprises three distinct layers: an inner carbon nanotube (CNT) core, coaxial BN nanotubes

Boosting Self-Trapped Exciton Emission via Interlayer Pillaring in Layered Lead Halide Frameworks.

Corrugated layered hybrid lead halides have emerged as a promising class of intrinsic broadband self-trapped exciton (STE) emitters for single-component white-light emission. However, regulating the structure to improve photoluminescence performance while maintaining a high intrinsic stability remains challenging. In this study, we introduce an elongated and nonconjugated biscyclohexyl dicarboxylate ligand to pillar two new members of ultrastable layered lead halide frameworks. Both compounds exhibit broad-band emission with large Stokes shifts, characteristic of STE-mediated radiative recombi

Novel auxetic semiconductors with high carrier mobility: first principles prediction of Janus Ge2XY (X/Y = S, Se, Te) monolayers.

Recently, auxetic materials have attracted attention due to their unusual behavior and multifunctional applications. A negative Poisson's ratio has been found in some two-dimensional (2D) asymmetric layered materials. In this work, we predict a new class of 2D auxetic materials with the chemical formula Ge2XY (X/Y = S, Se, Te) using ab initio calculations. We construct the crystal structure and evaluate the stability of Janus Ge2XY monolayers under ambient conditions. Phonon dispersion spectra, cohesive energy calculations, and molecular dynamics simulations confirm the high structural stabili

Low lattice thermal conductivity induced by rattling-like vibration in RbCaX (X = As, Sb) compounds with excellent thermoelectric properties.

Layered alkali metal (A)-alkaline earth metal (AE)-pnictogen (Pn = N, P, As, Sb, and Bi) compounds are promising candidates for thermoelectric applications due to their thermal stability and low thermal conductivity. This study systematically investigates and compares the anisotropic thermoelectric properties of the layered RbCaAs and RbCaSb compounds using density functional theory (DFT) and semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. The results show that the rattling thermal damping effect from weak Rb-As/Sb bonds in RbCaX (X = As, Sb) compounds leads to low lattice thermal conductivity (∼3.2

Bi-based bracelet-like monolayer with negative in-plane Poisson's ratio and enhanced photocatalytic performance: a first-principles study.

Auxetic materials are in high demand for advanced applications due to their relatively rare negative Poisson's ratio in two-dimensional materials. This study investigates the structural, mechanical, electronic, optical and photocatalytic properties of the AsBiTe3monolayer(ML) using first-principles calculations. Through analysis of phonon dispersion curves,ab-initiomolecular dynamics simulations, and Born conditions, we have confirmed the thermal, dynamic, and mechanical stability of the AsBiTe3monolayer. The study of the mechanical properties of this material revealed significant anisotropy a

Spin resolved topological bulk state in acoustics.

Extremely rare topologically protected acoustic energy sink is presented in this article. Acoustic topological phenomena are generally described using quantum anomalous hall effects (QAHE), quantum valley hall effects (QVHE), and quantum spin hall effects (QSHE) where spin orbit coupling is predominant. Topological edge states are demonstrated by bulk-boundary distinction when the bulk is insulated. In this article topological acoustic conductor and its phenomena are theoretically demonstrated where the boundaries are insulated. This is exactly opposite to the behavior of a topological acousti

Valley splitting of monolayer Hf3C2O2 by the spin-orbit coupling effect: first principles calculations using the HSE06 methods.

Electrons have not only charge and spin degrees of freedom, but also additional valley degrees of freedom. The search for valleytronic materials with large valley splits is important for the development of valleytronics. In this work, we applied first principles computations to calculate 1 L Hf3C2O2 at the level of HSE06. When the spin-orbit coupling (SOC) effect is considered, 1 L Hf3C2O2 is an indirect bandgap semiconductor with a bandgap of 0.952 eV. Meanwhile, valley splitting occurs between the conduction bands Γ and K, with a valley splitting value as high as 98.228 meV. Bader charge ana

A site-resolved two-dimensional quantum simulator with hundreds of trapped ions.

A large qubit capacity and an individual readout capability are two crucial requirements for large-scale quantum computing and simulation1. As one of the leading physical platforms for quantum information processing, the ion trap has achieved a quantum simulation of tens of ions with site-resolved readout in a one-dimensional Paul trap2-4 and of hundreds of ions with global observables in a two-dimensional (2D) Penning trap5,6. However, integrating these two features into a single system is still very challenging. Here we report the stable trapping of 512 ions in a 2D Wigner crystal and the si

Enhancing the Thermoelectric Performance of n-Type Mg3Sb2-Based Materials via Ag Doping.

The n-type Mg3(Sb, Bi)2 compounds show great potential for wasted heat energy harvesting due to their promising thermoelectric properties. This work discovers that doping transition element Ag into the n-type Mg3(Sb, Bi)2 can effectively optimize the power factor and suppress the lattice thermal conductivity simultaneously. Interestingly, the Ag doping has different effects compared to the isoelectronic and same group element Cu addition studied previously. A high power factor of 19.6 µW cm-1 K-2 is obtained at 673 K owing to the increased electrical conductivity. At the same time, the lattice

Searching for Unconventional Superfluid in Excitons of Monolayer Semiconductors.

It is well known that two-dimensional (2D) bosons in homogeneous space cannot undergo real Bose-Einstein condensation, and the superfluid to normal phase transition is Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless (BKT) type, associated with vortex-antivortex pair unbinding. Here we point out a 2D bosonic system whose low energy physics goes beyond conventional paradigm of 2D homogeneous bosons, i.e., intralayer excitons in monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides. With intrinsic valley-orbit coupling and valley Zeeman energy, exciton dispersion becomes linear at small momentum, giving rise to a series of

Microstructure evolution under thermo-mechanical operating of rocksalt-structure TiN via neural network potential.

In the process of high temperature service, the mechanical properties of cutting tools decrease sharply due to the peeling of the protective coating. However, the mechanism of such coating failure remains obscure due to the complicated interaction between atomic structure, temperature, and stress. This dynamic evolution nature demands both large system sizes and accurate description on the atomic scale, raising challenges for existing atomic scale calculation methods. Here, we developed a deep neural network (DNN) potential for Ti-N binary systems based on first-principles study datasets to ac

Thermoelectric, spin-dependent optical and quantum transport properties of 2D half-metallic Co2Se3.

In this paper, the thermoelectric, spin-dependent optical and quantum transport properties of a two-dimensional (2D) Co2Se3 monolayer are investigated using first principles calculations. The stability of the Co2Se3 monolayer is confirmed by energy-cohesive calculations and phonon dispersion analysis. According to electronic and magnetic calculations, Co2Se3 is a Dirac half-metal (DHM) with several Dirac cones around the Fermi level in the spin-down channel and exhibits intrinsic ferromagnetism with a high Curie temperature. Investigation of the thermoelectric properties shows that the Co2Se3

Prediction of novel tetravalent metal pentazolate salts with anharmonic effect.

In recent decades, pentazolate salts have gained considerable attention as high energy density materials (HEDMs). Using the machine-learning accelerated structure searching method, we predicted four pentazolate salts stabilized with tetravalent metals (Ti-N and Zr-N). Specifically, the ground state MN 20 (M = Ti, Zr) adopts the space-group P4/mcc under ambient conditions, transforming into the I-4 phase at higher pressure. Moreover, the I-4-MN 20 becomes energetically stable at moderate pressure (46.8 GPa for TiN 20 , 38.7 GPa for ZrN 20 ). Anharmonic phonon spectrum calculations demon

Size-dependent nanoscale soldering of polystyrene colloidal crystals by supercritical fluids.

HYPOTHESIS: Polymer particles self-assembled into colloidal crystals have exciting applications in photonics, phononics, templates for nanolithography, and coatings. Cold soldering utilizing polymer plasticization by supercritical fluids enables a novel, low-cost, low-effort, chemical-free means for uniform mechanical strengthening of fragile polymer colloidal crystals at moderate temperatures. Here, we aim to elucidate the role of particle size and gas-specific response for the most efficient soldering, exploring the full potential of this method. EXPERIMENTS: We investigate the elastic prop

Optimizing Electronic Quality Factor toward High-Performance Ge1- x - y Tax Sby Te Thermoelectrics: The Role of Transition Metal Doping.

Owing to high intrinsic figure-of-merit implemented by multi-band valleytronics, GeTe-based thermoelectric materials are promising for medium-temperature applications. Transition metals are widely used as dopants for developing high-performance GeTe thermoelectric materials. Herein, relevant work is critically reviewed to establish a correlation among transition metal doping, electronic quality factor, and figure-of-merit of GeTe. From first-principle calculations, it is found that Ta, as an undiscovered dopant in GeTe, can effectively converge energy offset between light and heavy conduction
