Long-term follow-up of two siblings with adult-onset neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis, Kufs type A.

Reports on the clinical presentation of adult-onset neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCL) are scarce compared to infantile- and childhood-ons … EEG revealed frequent generalized spikes, polyspikes, and waves, prominent on awakening and during photic stimulation without significant change throughout the clinical course. Abnormalities concerning the blink reflex, auditory startle response, and startle response to somatosensory inputs manifested within four years. The patients underwent transient and mild imp …

Electroencephalographic recordings in dogs suffering from idiopathic and symptomatic epilepsy: diagnostic value of interictal short time EEG protocols supplemented by two activation techniques.

The diagnostic value of interictal short time electroencephalographic (EEG) recordings in epileptic dogs under general anaesthesia with propofol and the muscle relaxant rocuronium bromide was investigated. Two activation techniques, namely photic stimulation and hyperventilation, were evaluated for their potential to enhance the diagnostic validity of these recordings. Sixty-one dogs suffering from idiopathic epilepsy and 28 dogs suffering from symptomatic epilepsy were included. Electroencephalograms were recorded using five subdermal EEG electrodes (F3, F4, Cz, O1 and O2). All 89 EEGs were a…

Does photoparoxysmal response in children represent provoked seizure? Evidence from simultaneous motor task during EEG.

OBJECTIVES: Acute cognitive changes during epileptiform discharges have been studied using computer assisted cognitive tasks. We aimed to demonstrate acute behavioral change (using a simple motor response task MRT) during photoparoxysmal response (PPR) in children below 18 years. METHODS: Children performed a simple repetitive motor task during intermittent photic stimulation (IPS). All episodes of PPR not associated with obvious clinical change (as observed by the technologist or reported by the patient) were analyzed for this study. The average time interval between two successive motor res…

Short-term outpatient EEG-video monitoring with induction in a veterans administration population.

The gold standard for diagnosis of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures (PNES) is EEG-video monitoring. EEG-video monitoring is usually prolon … a published protocol []. Briefly, induction is performed without a placebo, using hyperventilation, photic stimulation, and verbal suggestion. This was performed on patients in whom there was a clinical suspicion of PNES on clinical grounds. A total of 52 short-term EEG-video monitoring sessions were performed. Of those, 40 patients (77%) were men. In 35 patients (6 …

Clinical features and genetics of progressive myoclonus epilepsy of the Univerricht-Lundborg type.

Progressive myoclonus epilepsy of the Unverricht-Lundborg type is the most common cause of progressive myoclonus epilepsy worldwide. Typical features include onset at the age of 6-15 years, stimulus-sensitive myoclonus, tonic-clonic seizures, a progressive course and characteristic electroencephalographic findings with an exceptionally high sensitivity to photic stimulation. With modern anticonvulsive therapy the symptoms are relatively well controlled, and the disease may not always progress. Previously, no biochemical or pathological marker existed for the diagnosis of Unverricht-Lundborg di…

A practical guide for routine EEG studies in epilepsy.

Know what is not epilepsy! An electroencephalographer can do much more damage by overinterpreting than by underinterpreting an EEG tracing. Epilepsy is a clinical, not an EEG, diagnosis, but the EEG, when used appropriately, can greatly aid the diagnostic process. Use activating techniques such as hyperventilation, photic stimulation, and natural sleep. Take advantage of seizures in the laboratory--this is a unique opportunity to make a diagnosis. If the ictal event is not accompanied by an EEG abnormality, and pseudoseizures are suspected, remember that patients with hysterical epilepsy often…

Four patients are described, who on clinical, histological, and biochemical criteria are considered to be suffering from neuronal ceroid lip … illness, myoclonus tends increasingly to dominate the clinical picture. An abnormal sensitivity to photic stimulation at a very slow frequency is a suggestive finding. Evidence of cerebral atrophy on air-encephalography favours this diagnosis, as the brain tends to be enlarged in the gangliosidoses. Neurological and psychological applications of transcranial lasers and LEDs.

Transcranial brain stimulation with low-level light/laser therapy (LLLT) is the use of directional low-power and high-fluency monochromatic or quasimonochromatic light from lasers or LEDs in the red-to-near-infrared wavelengths to modulate a neurobiological function or induce a neurotherapeutic effect in a nondestructive and non-thermal manner. The mechanism of action of LLLT is based on photon energy absorption by cytochrome oxidase, the terminal enzyme in the mitochondrial respiratory chain. Cytochrome oxidase has a key role in neuronal physiology, as it serves as an interface between oxidat

Acetylcholine, theta-rhythm and activity of hippocampal neurons in the rabbit--IV. Sensory stimulation.

Modifications of responses of hippocampal neurons to sensory stimuli at the background of increased endogenous acetylcholine level (injection of physostigmine) and during blocking by scopolamine were analysed in the chronic alert rabbit. A significant decrease of reactivity (about 40%) of hippocampal neurons to sensory stimuli occurred after physostigmine injection, inducing stable theta modulation. Suppression and decrease of inhibitory responses (including initial reset phase) and of some excitatory reactions (including on-effects) were observed. However, a limited group of excitatory respon

Headache due to photosensitive magnesium depletion.

Clinical and paraclinical data (visual stress tests, electroencephalographic and cerebrovascular photic driving, visual evoked potentials) demonstrate that the concept of photosensitive headache is fully justified. The interictal hallmark of photosensitive cephalalgic patients is potentiation (or sensitization) instead of habituation. The aetiopathogenic mechanisms of photosensitive headache associate hypofunction of the biological clock and magnesium depletion. The new concept of headache due to photosensitive magnesium depletion seems justified. It appears logical to add the treatments of ma

[The effect of various ventilation conditions on evoked potentials of the visual cortex of the cat in distention of the stomach].

In 10 cats anaesthetized using chloralose and with muscular relaxation by gallamine and continuous artificial ventilation in acute experiments photically evoked potentials (PEP) were recorded from the visual area of the cortex under different intragastric pressures and varying tidal volumes. It was the aim of this study to examine whether an exteroceptive stimulus (light flash) in the visual analyzer, which is influenced by an interoceptive stimulation (gastric pressure), may also be modified by different tidal volumes. Times, amplitudes and slope parameters, blood pressure and heart rate of t

Towards maximizing optical access through Smart Dura.

Objective. To overcome the limitations of optical access caused by opaque electrodes in multimodal neural interfaces used in large-animal models, and to enable scalable, high-density electrophysiology with unobstructed optical imaging and optogenetic stimulation.Approach.In this work, we redesigned our previously demonstrated multimodal cortical surface array, the Smart Dura, by incorporating transparent indium tin oxide (ITO) electrodes. ITO provides good electrical conductivity, while providing high levels of transparency. We discuss the design, microfabrication, benchtop characterization and

Chromatic induction and retinal image motion.

As the eyes drift across a scene, borders between surfaces slide across the retina. Consequently, near borders' edges, parts of the retina that have adapted to the light at one side of the border are exposed to the light at the other side of the border. Such changes in exposure might increase the judged contrast. Retinal image motion might therefore contribute to chromatic induction, the influence that adjacent colours have on a surface's apparent colour, by increasing the apparent colour contrast. We conducted two experiments to evaluate this possibility. The experiments examined how artifici

Continuous flash suppression of neural responses and population orientation coding in macaque V1.

Continuous flash suppression (CFS), in which a dynamic masker presented to one eye suppresses awareness of a stimulus in the other eye, is widely used to study visual subconsciousness. Although some studies report preserved high-level processing under CFS, these effects have been increasingly questioned and may partly reflect residual low-level feature processing. A key unresolved issue is how strongly neuronal responses in V1, where inputs from the two eyes first converge, are affected by CFS, and how much the remaining signals can support downstream processing. Here, we used two-photon calci

Sensory adaptation and pupil-linked arousal support flexible evidence accumulation during perceptual decision making.

Effective decision making in dynamic environments requires flexible evidence accumulation. Although models often express this flexibility as a property of the accumulator, its implementation in the brain may involve adaptive mechanisms operating at other stages of the decision process. We examined two such mechanisms: (1) stimulus-specific sensory adaptation at the level of evidence encoding, and (2) arousal-related neuromodulation, which could, in principle, affect both evidence encoding and accumulation. We measured single-unit activity in the middle temporal (MT) area and pupil-linked arous

Local cues enable classification of image patches as surfaces, object boundaries, or illumination changes.

To correctly parse the visual scene, one must detect edges and determine their underlying cause. Previous work has demonstrated that neural networks trained to differentiate shadow and occlusion edges exhibit sensitivity to boundary sharpness and texture differences. Here, we investigate whether human observers are also sensitive to these cues using synthetic edge stimuli formed by quilting together two natural textures, allowing us to parametrically manipulate boundary sharpness, texture modulation, and luminance modulation. Observers classified five sets of synthetic boundary images as shado

Depth-dependent noise interference reveals scene-structure constraints on contour completion.

Contour completion allows perception of whole objects despite fragmented input, yet the mechanisms that support this process remain debated. Purely local, bottom-up models posit that oriented edge signals propagate across gaps according to two-dimensional (2-D) principles of good continuation, predicting that interference from luminance noise should depend only on local image geometry. In contrast, scene-based frameworks - including accounts that incorporate 3-D surface layout - propose that completion depends on a global analysis of depth, occlusion, and surface assignment, predicting stronge

Spontaneous perceptual reversals are accompanied by systematic changes in pupil size but not respiration phase.

Humans tend to align their respiration with important events, in line with the notion that respiration serves as a tool to allocate (neuro-)physiological resources. This respiration alignment is consistently reported in laboratory studies relying on sequences of temporally structured, stimulus-driven experimental trials. Whether this alignment also occurs in the absence of external cues - such as during spontaneous changes of perception - remains unknown. Notably, pupil size is known to change around spontaneous changes in perception, and pupil size covaries with respiration phase, suggesting
