Albinism and Blood Cell Profile: The Peculiar Case of Asinara Donkeys.

The complete blood cell count (CBC) was screened in a group of 15 donkeys, of which 8 were of Asinara breed (oculocutaneous albinism type 1, OCA1) and 7 of Sardo breed (gray coat). All donkeys were kept under same management and dietary conditions and underwent periodic health monitoring in the month of June 2024, at the peak of the positive photoperiod, at Mediterranean latitudes. One aliquot of whole blood, drawn from each individual into K2-EDTA containing tubes, was analyzed for the complete blood cell count through an automatic analyzer, within two hours of sampling. Data were analyzed an…

Central Interleukin-1β Suppresses the Nocturnal Secretion of Melatonin.

In vertebrates, numerous processes occur in a rhythmic manner. The hormonal signal reliably reflecting the environmental light conditions is … IL-1β (50 µg/animal) suppressed (P < 0.05) nocturnal melatonin secretion in sheep regardless of the photoperiod. This may have resulted from decreased (P < 0.05) synthesis of the melatonin intermediate serotonin, which may have resulted, at least partially, from a reduced expression of tryptophan hydroxylase. IL-1β also inhibited (P < 0.05) the expression of …

6-Sulphatoxymelatonin secretion in different locomotor activity types of the blind mole rat Spalax ehrenbergi.

6-Sulphatoxymelatonin (aMT6S) excretion was examined in the urine of rhythmic and arrhythmic blind subterranean mole rats (Spalax ehrenbergi) to test the correlation between melatonin secretion (as represented by aMT6S) and variability in circadian locomotor activity. Activity pattern was tested in four males, first for a week under short photoperiod [light:dark (LD) 10:14], followed by 10 days in constant darkness (DD). After several months the experiment was repeated under long photoperiod (LD 14:10), followed by DD conditions. Under LD conditions all animals exhibited aMT6S excretion during…

Gonado-modulatory effects of high humidity is pineal dependent in Indian palm squirrel Funambulus pennanti (Wroughton).

F. pennanti presented a clear biphasic pineal mediated seasonal sexual cycle. This sexual cycle was essentially characterised by a very shor … ession in testicular weight of sham-operated animals even in the presence of gonad stimulatory long photoperiod (16L:8D) and high temperature (40 degrees +/- 5 degrees C) while exposure of animals to moderate RH (65 +/- 5%) during sexual regression phase partially prevented testicular regression even in presence of inhibitory short photoperiod (11L:13D) and n …

Geographic differences in the phenology of gonadal development and moult, but not of egg laying, are genetically based in a small songbird.

To forecast how fast populations can adapt to climate change, it is essential to determine the evolutionary potential of different life-cycle stages under selection. In birds, timing of gonadal development and moult are primarily regulated by photoperiod, while laying date is highly phenotypically plastic to temperature. We tested whether geographic variation in phenology of these life-cycle events between populations of great tits (Parus major) has a genetic basis, indicating that contemporary genetic adaptation is possible. We carried out a common garden experiment in which we bred first- an…

Climate warming increases spring phenological differences among temperate trees.

Climate warming has substantially advanced spring leaf flushing, but winter chilling and photoperiod co-determine the leaf flushing process in ways that vary among species. As a result, the interspecific differences in spring phenology (IDSP) are expected to change with climate warming, which may, in turn, induce negative or positive ecological consequences. However, the temporal change of IDSP at large spatiotemporal scales remains unclear. In this study, we analyzed long-term in-situ observations (1951-2016) of six, coexisting temperate tree species from 305 sites across Central Europe and f…

Seasonal variation of spontaneous blink rate and beta EEG activity.

Seasonal variations of the photoperiod have been shown to regulate biological and behavioral functions, with also effects on clinical symptom and course of several psychiatric conditions. Although melatonin is considered the principal signal used to transmit informations about the light and dark cycle, a dopamine (DA) role in regulating seasonal changes has been suggested. Few studies have addressed a seasonal pattern of dopamine, and human studies have been conducted on inter-subject differences, comparing measures obtained during fall-winter with those of spring-summer. We studied within-sub…

Decoding the nightly melatonin signal through circadian clockwork.

Photoperiod regulates the timing of seasonal cycles in reproduction, energy metabolism, moult and other seasonal characteristics, and the effects are transduced through changes in the duration of nocturnal melatonin secretion from the pineal gland. Short daily melatonin signals (4-8 h/day) activate a summer physiology, while long signals (> 10 h/day) produce a winter phenotype. Decoding signal duration occurs in specific target cells in the brain and pituitary gland, each governing a different component of the seasonal adaptation. The pars tuberalis (PT) of the pituitary regulates prolactin re…

The irritable male syndrome.

The irritable male syndrome (IMS) is a behavioural state of nervousness, irritability, lethargy and depression that occurs in adult male mam … cretion, and melatonin receptors expressed in the premammillary area relay the effects of melatonin/photoperiod. Changes in the activity of hypothalamic opioidergic, dopaminergic and serotonergic neural networks may dictate the interactive effects of T and photoperiod. The working hypothesis is that IMS is a transition state associated with low hypothalamic a …

Seasonal metabolic oscillation: adiposity cycling as a candidate amplifier of mood seasonality in seasonal affective and bipolar disorders.

Seasonal affective disorder (SAD) and bipolar disorder (BD) with a seasonal pattern are conventionally framed as disorders of photoperiod and circadian timing, yet affected individuals also show a striking, reproducible metabolic rhythm-carbohydrate craving and weight gain in winter, appetite reduction and weight loss in summer-that has rarely been integrated into mechanistic models of seasonal mood cycling. Building on an evolutionary "metabolic plasticity" view, in which seasonal shifts in energy storage are conserved adaptations that can become maladaptive in predisposed individuals, we pro…

Mild increase of temperature from the thermoneutral zone inhibits reproductive activation in Syrian hamsters through epigenetic inhibition.

The rapid increase in urbanization is drastically altering the habitat composition of the wild population. Urbanization is predominantly changing the landscape, composition of flora and fauna, availability of night light, and the rise in temperature. In the natural habitat, photoperiod and temperature are inseparable. In the present study, we examined the effect of mild temperature change from the thermoneutral zone of Syrian hamsters on reproduction-linked activities. To investigate the neuroendocrine mechanisms underlying heat stress effects on reproduction in hamsters, two experiments were …

Role of the thyroid gland in seasonal reproduction: thyroidectomy blocks seasonal suppression of reproductive neuroendocrine activity in ewes.

Seasonal reproductive transitions in ewes are generated endogenously and are synchronized by annual changes in photoperiod. Previous evidence indicates that thyroidectomy prevents the transition to anestrus in ewes maintained in a fixed day length, suggesting that the thyroid is needed for endogenously generated reproductive arrest. Here we tested the hypothesis that the thyroid is required for endogenous seasonal suppression of the neuroendocrine mechanism that regulates pulsatile LH secretion. Ewes were thyroidectomized (n = 6) in summer, 6 weeks before the onset of the breeding season, or t…

Natural variation in GmRVE4d facilitates soybean latitudinal adaptation by regulating GmPRR5a-dependent flowering and maturity.

Timely flowering and maturity are crucial for plant reproduction and environmental adaptation. Light-dark cycle-associated regulatory networks integrate photoperiodic cues with intrinsic developmental programs and play pivotal roles in flowering, maturity and environmental adaptation. Soybean is a short-day crop with strong photoperiod responsiveness; however, the molecular mechanisms by which these networks mediate soybean adaptation to diverse environments remain largely elusive. Here, we combine genome-wide association analysis with deep learning-based assessment of soybean maturity variati…

A high-quality spinach reference genome and co-expression analysis reveal circadian and floral initiation gene networks.

Bolting time is critical for yield stability in spinach, a long-day Amaranthaceae crop whose photoperiod-dependent flowering pathway remains incompletely understood. We generated a chromosome-scale reference genome for an early-bolting spinach line (944.6 Mb; 97.9% BUSCO completeness) and used it to integrate QTL mapping, sequence variation, and transcriptome-based co-expression analysis. Remapping bolting-time QTLs on this improved reference retained qBt2.1, qBt3.1, and qBt3.2, while refining their physical intervals and candidate gene content. Candidate loci included SoCOL14/SoFL1 at qBt2.1,…

Melatonin-dependent timing of seasonal reproduction by the pars tuberalis: pivotal roles for long daylengths and thyroid hormones.

Most mammals living at temperate latitudes exhibit marked seasonal variations in reproduction. In long-lived species, it is assumed that timely physiological alternations between a breeding season and a period of sexual rest depend upon the ability of day length (photoperiod) to synchronise an endogenous timing mechanism called the circannual clock. The sheep has been extensively used to characterise the time-measurement mechanisms of seasonal reproduction. Melatonin, secreted only during the night, acts as the endocrine transducer of the photoperiodic message. The present review is concerned …

Endocrine mechanisms of seasonal adaptation in small mammals: from early results to present understanding.

Seasonal adaptation is widespread among mammals of temperate and polar latitudes. The changes in physiology, morphology and behaviour are controlled by the photoneuroendocrine system that, as a first step, translates day lengths into a hormonal signal (melatonin). Decoding of the humoral melatonin signal, i.e. responses on the cellular level to slight alterations in signal duration, represents the prerequisite for appropriate timing of winter acclimatization in photoperiodic animals. Corresponding to the diversity of affected traits, several hormone systems are involved in the regulation downs…

Circadian variation in plasma corticosterone in the American alligator, Alligator mississippiensis, and the effects of ACTH injections.

Crocodilians are unique among the reptiles in that they lack a pineal gland. Since the pineal is believed to play a role in the regulation of photoperiodic control of circadian rhythms in activity and corticosterone secretion in vertebrates, plasma corticosterone was measured by radioimmunoassay (RIA) in samples collected over a 24-hr period from captive-reared, juvenile crocodilians (Alligator mississippiensis) held under a constant temperature but exposed to natural photoperiod. A clear biphasic rhythm in plasma corticosterone levels was observed, with a peak at 0800 hr and a second peak at …

Elimination of short-day melatonin signaling accelerates gonadal recrudescence but does not break refractoriness in male Turkish hamsters.

Long days stimulate and short days (SDs) inhibit the reproductive axis of photoperiodic rodents. In long-day Turkish hamsters, unlike most other rodents, elimination of pineal melatonin secretion by constant light or pinealectomy initiates a cycle of gonadal involution and recrudescence outwardly similar to that induced by short days. The present study assessed whether short days and constant light induce the seasonal reproductive cycle via common or different interval timing mechanisms. Male hamsters that had undergone gonadal involution in SDs for 8 or 14 weeks were treated with LL for 14 an…

Delayed implantation in the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) and other pinnipeds.

Delayed implantation is an obligate part of the reproductive cycle of many (possibly all) pinniped species, the duration of delay ranging from 2 to 4 months depending on the length of gestation. Blastocyst reactivation and implantation in the northern fur seal occur during decreasing photoperiods, and are preceded by increase in the circulating concentrations of oestradiol-17 beta and progesterone. However, neither experimental shortening of photoperiod, nor injections of oestradiol-17 beta or progesterone (or both) induced reactivation. Furthermore, these treatments had no effect on the compo…

A novel theory of rapid eye movement sleep as an integral component of the seasonal timekeeping apparatus.

Although we have an increasingly sure grasp of much of its proximate circuitry, we continue to lack the ultimate physiological rationale of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep. In this paper, we propose that REM sleep derives both its proximate mechanisms as well as its ultimate cause from photoperiodism. (This refers to the means whereby many organisms translate information about day length into appropriately timed physiological adjustments ensuring their survival through the most challenging season-usually winter). First, the REM sleep interval serves, we suggest, as a sampling device attuned to …
