BACKGROUND: Late blight caused by Phytophthora infestans remains one of the most devastating diseases in potato cultivation, and durable resistance requires the combination of multiple resistance loci. The Julius Kühn Institute (JKI) has maintained a late blight resistance breeding program for more than 60 years and has developed extensive pre-breeding material with largely unknown resistance genetics. To characterize the genetic basis of this resistance, field trials were conducted over three years with 200 genotypes, including pre-breeding clones and cultivars. Genotypes were inoculated with

As the demand for plant-based nutrition increases, improving the protein profile of legumes like cowpea has become a breeding priority. Cowpea, a multiuse legume and staple in many low-income regions, provides important dietary protein that can help meet the demand in our growing population. Our research used genome-wide association studies (GWAS) and phenomic tools to investigate the genetic architecture of seed protein content in cowpea and integrated 4 cohorts of undergraduate researchers through a USDA-AFRI REEU program. Using wet chemistry and near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS), we assesse

Cassava (Manihot esculenta Crantz.) has been a vital staple and food security crop in Tanzania for several centuries, and it is likely that its resilience will play a key role in mitigating livelihood insecurities arising from climate change. The sector is dominated by smallholder farmers growing traditional landrace varieties. A recent surge in virus diseases and awareness in the commercial potential of cassava has prompted a drive to disseminate improved varieties in the country. These factors however also threaten the existence of landraces and associated farmer knowledge. It is important t

The management of emerging plant viruses presents significant challenges for global agriculture, requiring innovative approaches beyond conventional control strategies. Traditional methods rely on cultural practices, vector management, and breeding for genetic resistance, and these approaches are often time-consuming and may have limited effectiveness against emerging viral strains. Spray-Induced Gene Silencing (SIGS), involving topical application of virus-derived double-stranded RNA (dsRNA) to trigger plant defense mechanisms, offers a promising alternative strategy. However, the application

Aluminum (Al) toxicity in acidic soils severely constrains global crop production. Classical mechanisms of plant Al tolerance, established primarily in sterile laboratory systems, have centered on organic acid secretion. However, such mechanisms do not capture the critical contributions of rhizosphere microorganisms under field conditions. This review synthesizes current advances in microbe-mediated Al detoxification, aiming to reinterpret classical tolerance mechanisms from a microbial perspective and explore strategies for translating these insights into sustainable field applications. Soybean (Glycine max) is a photoperiod-sensitive legume whose latitudinal adaptation depends on the precise control of flowering time and plant height. Histone demethylases of the JmjC domain-containing (JMJ) protein family have been implicated in these processes across plant species, but their specific roles in soybean remain largely unexplored. Here, we identify soybean GmJMJ19 and GmJMJ20, two closely related JMJD5/KDM8 orthologs, as master epigenetic regulators that coordinately control both photoperiodic flowering and post-flowering plant height. Both genes exhibit intrinsic, rhythmic exp

Plant height determines lodging resistance and is closely linked to yield stability in wheat. In this study, we identified two semi-dwarf wheat mutants, designated je0370 and je0344, using the winter wheat cultivar Jing411 as the wild type (WT). Field experiments revealed that the plant height of these two mutants was significantly lower than that of the WT. In contrast, the thousand-grain weight was significantly higher in je0370 but lower in je0344 compared to the WT. Bulk Segregant Analysis (BSA) based on exome capture sequencing indicated that the gene responsible for height reduction is l

Soybean (Glycine max) is one of the world's most important oilseed crops and has adapted to various environmental conditions. Yields of soybeans in Nigeria are notably low due to different production constraints, including the limited availability of improved varieties and the slow replacement rate of old varieties with new and high-yielding ones. Ensuring high genetic diversity in the working germplasm is among the primary factors for the success of breeding programs in identifying high-yielding and well-adapted improved varieties. This study aimed to assess the genetic diversity and populati

BACKGROUND: The location of the microhabitats where immature phlebotomine sand flies of the genus Lutzomyia develop is one of the least-known aspects of this group of medically important insects. For this reason strategies of source reduction approach for their control have not been possible in contrast to other insect vectors (such as mosquitoes), because their juvenile stages in terrestrial microhabitats is difficult to detect.
METHODS: Direct examination of soil samples, incubation of substrates and the use of emergence traps were the methods used to identify juvenile stages in 160 soil sa

Year-to-year climate variability poses a challenge for agriculture by increasing crop yield variability; therefore, there is a need to identify genotypes that can withstand these fluctuations. With the right selection criteria, genotypes with yield stability across variable environmental conditions can be selected. Methods such as Finlay-Wilkinson random regression (FWRR) may allow us to use sparse datasets-common in plant breeding pipelines-and incorporate genomic data to leverage phenotypic information from related genotypes to predict yield stability. Our objective was to examine how the nu…

Heat stress (HS) significantly impedes wheat production, making the development of heat-tolerant cultivars increasingly essential in the context of climate change. This study evaluated 153 elite spring wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) genotypes from the Wheat Association Mapping Initiative (WAMI) panel and three controls in field trials conducted during the 2020-2021 and 2021-2022 growing seasons at the Isfahan University of Technology research farm, Iran. Two sowing dates (SD; fall and spring) under full irrigation were employed to replicate HS conditions, with spring SD simulating terminal HS an

Although Chaenomeles is widely used in horticulture, traditional Chinese medicine and landscape greening, insufficient research has hindered its breeding and seed selection. This study investigated the floral phenology, floral organ characteristics, palynology, and breeding systems of Chaenomeles speciosa (Sweet) Nakai. The floral characteristics of C. speciosa were observed both visually and stereoscopically. The microstructures of the flower organs were observed using scanning electron microscopy. Pollen stainability was determined using triphenyl tetrazolium chloride staining. Stigma recept

Culex (Barraudius) modestus (Ficalbi 1889) are found in temperate regions across Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa. These mosquitoes thrive during the summer and prefer to breed in permanent vegetative habitats such as rice paddies and marshes. Culex modestus feed on a wide range of bird species but are highly attracted to humans, which makes them a potential 'bridge' vector for enzootic pathogens. There is compelling evidence that Culex modestus is an efficient vector for West Nile virus, potentially capable of causing epidemics in humans and other mammals. This species is also a likely vecto

The movement ecology of raccoons varies widely across habitats with important implications for the management of zoonotic diseases such as rabies. However, the spatial ecology of raccoons remains poorly understood in many regions of the United States, particularly in the southeast. To better understand the spatial ecology of raccoons in the southeastern US, we investigated the role of sex, season, and habitat on monthly raccoon home range and core area sizes in three common rural habitats (bottomland hardwood, upland pine, and riparian forest) in South Carolina, USA. From 2018-2022, we obtaine

Avian leukosis virus subgroup J (ALV-J) is the most prevalent subgroup in chickens and exhibits increased pathogenicity and stronger horizontal and vertical transmission ability among different breeds. Although vertical transmission of ALV-J from infected hens through artificial insemination has been inferred from the detection of the p27 antigen in swabs and serum, there has been no further research on the transmission pattern of ALVs in roosters. In the present study, the positive rate of ALV increased significantly in an indigenous flock after detecting the p27 antigen via enzyme-linked imm

Microsporidium is a kind of intracellular fungal pathogen that greatly threatens the human health, breeding industry, and food security. All members of microsporidia possess a unique, highly specialized invasion organelle, described as the polar filament. Like "reversing a finger of gloves", the polar filament discharges out of mature spores to transform as the polar tube, and pathogenic sporoplasm is transported to host cell through polar tube to complete infection. During the invasion process, the structure of polar filament and polar tube has changed, so does the protein composition on them

BACKGROUND: Since Aedes aegypti mosquitoes preferentially breed in domestic containers, control efforts focus on larval source reduction. Our objectives were to design and test the effectiveness of a source reduction intervention to improve caregiver knowledge and behaviors in coastal Kenya.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted a cluster-randomized controlled trial with 261 households from 5 control villages and 259 households from 5 intervention villages. From each household, one child (10-16 years old) and his or her primary caregiver participated in the intervention. We assessed ca

Exercising horses are commonly plagued by muscle fatigue and soreness, which can result in reduced performance ability. In the present study, ten unconditioned horses were fed 200g per day DigestaWell NRG, a commercial dietary supplement containing Yucca schidigera and Trigonella foenum-graecum, two herbs shown in other species to reduce post-exercise muscle pain and soreness. A control, unsupplemented group contained ten horses of similar age, breed, and gender. Horses completed a 50 minutes, ridden standardized exercise test of moderate intensity immediately prior to (Period1) and after 28 d

Genes and environment interact continuously throughout life, from the moment of conception, to regulate and affect all aspects of human structure and function. The normal rules of mendelian inheritance, ie, the transmission of genes over the generations, are usually best studied by observation of abnormal mutations, especially in plants and animals under precise breeding conditions. The study of such didactic models as the guinea pig crosses discussed here is a prerequisite to an understanding of mendelian genetics in man and the terms used in other articles to appear in this series.

Nine hunting breed dogs were treated for thoracic empyema of undetermined origin. Seven dogs returned to normal health after combined pleural drainage by modified Seldinger technique and long-term chemotherapy. Two were destroyed in the early phase of treatment. One died and one was destroyed due to recurrence. Associated signs in four of the dogs included thoracic wall swellings. In two of these, very small foreign bodies of plant origin were found intrathoracically at surgery. Predominantly anaerobic commensals of the mucous membranes were isolated from pleural exudate. Post-mortem examinati
