Fasting plasma amino-acid profiles were determined in 32 subjects with either cataractous lenses (24 subjects) or normal lenses (eight subjects). The findings were compared with established laboratory normal values. The amino-acid levels of all subjects with normal lenses were within the normal range for the subjects' age groups. Two patients with primary plasma cell leukaemia who achieved complete remission are reported. They were treated with induction therapy consisting of a multipeptide derivative of sarcolysin, Peptichemio, given intravenously, combined with vincristine and/or prednisone, followed by conventional melphalan-prednisone therapy. 5-7 months following the beginning of therapy, both patients attained a complete remission which lasted 23 and 6 months; second remission was not achieved. Plasma amino acid concentrations have been investigated in 12 female patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), who were hospitalized for two 14-day periods, one of which included 7 days of total fasting, whereas the other served as control period with normal food intake. Oral carnitine has been reported to have a lipid-lowering effect with concomitant elevation of high density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) levels in normo- and hyperlipidemic individuals. Unexpectedly, basal carnitine concentrations were found to be abnormally high in subjects receiving a combination of probucol (1 g/day) and clofibrate (2 g/day), and who also had reduced HDL-C levels. Serious thyrotoxicosis must be treated quickly and efficiently. Plasma exchange (PE) takes place when ordinary treatment is not suitable in emergency cases. Because a seven year old boy with severe dermatomyositis failed to respond to a six week treatment course with prednisone (60 mg/m2) and azathioprine (2 mg/kg/d), five plasma separations were performed. Already after the second plasma separation an impressive reduction of skin ulcerations and an increase of muscle strength were noticed. So far there has been no relapse in spite of rapid reduction in the prednisone dosage.

Three patients were recently treated for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). One presented with toxic shock syndrome; TTP developed but promptly responded to a regimen of antiplatelet agents, steroids and plasma exchange. In another the manifestations of TTP developed after presentation with hypertension and abdominal pain. This patient responded to a similar regimen but required extended treatment before remission could be maintained with medications alone. In the third patient the full TTP syndrome appeared after several days of plasma exchange treatment for hemolyticuremic syndrome. …

Twenty-three boys with pubertal gynecomastia had higher mean levels of prolactin than boys of similar development but without gynecomastia (10.1 vs. 6.2 ng/ml). In girls of comparable pubertal staging prolactin level was 12.3 ng/ml. In boys no hyperprolactinemia was found, not even after stimulation with TRH, prolactin levels were not elevated in two boys with secreting mammary glands. The plasma protein binding of zomepirac, a new nonnarcotic analgesic, was studied using equilibrium dialysis. Experiments were performed using human plasma and plasma from mice, rats, and rhesus monkeys, all species of pharmacological or toxicological interest.
