Minimally Invasive Endoscopic Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.

Advances in technology and specialized instrumentation allow surgeons to study, refine, and modify minimally invasive surgery (MIS) to replace standard operations. This has occurred across many surgical specialties. The benefits of MIS include less swelling, less pain, shorter hospital stay, and faster return to daily activities. Oral and maxillofacial endoscopic techniques are used for access to the ramus condyle unit, maxillary sinus, zygoma, orbit, temporomandibular joint, and salivary ductal system. Although endoscopic techniques are also used in facial cosmetic surgery, this discussion fo

Methodological quality and performance of artificial intelligence and machine learning models for preoperative risk prediction in plastic surgery: A systematic review.

Artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are increasingly being applied to preoperative risk prediction in plastic surgery; however, the methodological quality and clinical readiness of these models are yet to be systematically evaluated. This systematic review assessed the quality, risk of bias, and predictive performance of AI/ML preoperative risk prediction models in plastic surgery using the PROBAST+AI framework. Five databases were searched from inception through October 2025. Ten studies met the inclusion criteria, encompassing autologous breast reconstruction (n = 2), allo

Psychological Disorder and Patient Satisfaction in Aesthetic Surgery-A Systematic Review.

Background and Objectives: This systematic review investigates the relationship between preoperative psychological disorders and postoperative satisfaction among patients undergoing aesthetic surgery. While aesthetic procedures can enhance self-image, growing evidence indicates that underlying mental health conditions, particularly BDD, depression, and anxiety, may compromise surgical outcomes. Materials and Methods: A comprehensive literature search was performed in PubMed, the Cochrane Library, and Google Scholar between January 2010 and December 2024. Eligible observational studies assessed

Medical tourism in plastic surgery: A European survey on professional practices, perspectives, and challenges.

BACKGROUND: Demand for aesthetic surgery has risen rapidly, and the parallel growth in cross-border medical travel is increasingly burdening European health systems with imported complications. The perspective of board-certified plastic surgeons themselves-as both providers of cross-border care and managers of its complications-has not been systematically captured at a European level. METHODS: An anonymous online questionnaire (43 items across three thematic sections) was distributed by the European Society of Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery (ESPRAS) to its member national socie

The Development, Deployment, and Evaluation of the CLEFT-Q Computerized Adaptive Test: A Multimethods Approach Contributing to Personalized, Person-Centered Health Assessments in Plastic Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Routine use of patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) and computerized adaptive tests (CATs) may improve care in a range of surgical conditions. However, most available CATs are neither condition-specific nor coproduced with patients and lack clinically relevant score interpretation. Recently, a PROM called the CLEFT-Q has been developed for use in the treatment of cleft lip or palate (CL/P), but the assessment burden may be limiting its uptake into clinical practice. OBJECTIVE: We aimed to develop a CAT for the CLEFT-Q, which could facilitate the uptake of the CLEFT-Q PROM int

UK Guidelines on the Diagnosis and Treatment of Breast Implant-Associated Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma on behalf of the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Expert Advisory Group.

Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) is an uncommon T-cell non-Hodgkin Lymphoma (NHL) associated with breast implants. Raising awareness of the possibility of BIA-ALCL in anyone with breast implants and new breast symptoms is crucial to early diagnosis. The tumour begins on the inner aspect of the peri-implant capsule causing an effusion, or less commonly a tissue mass to form within the capsule, which may spread locally or to more distant sites in the body. Diagnosis is usually made by cytological, immunohistochemical and immunophenotypic evaluation of the aspir

[Technical information: The 'so called' Camille Bernard lower lip reconstruction: An eponymous confusion clarified].

The use of eponyms honours those who have contributed to the development of medicine and facilitates communication between colleagues. Eponyms are based on historical knowledge to know who was the first to use a given technique. In the previous century, two different operative procedures have been attached to the 'so called' Bernard lower lip reconstruction. This historical literature on lip reconstruction with a focus on the years 1853-1855 elucidates the roles of Bernard, Saeman, Desgranges and Burow, and gives suggestions for eponyms that do justice to the innovating surgeons Bernard, Burow

Nasal soft tissue trauma and management.

The nose is the most prominent of all facial structures and is susceptible to many types of trauma. All soft tissue injuries of the nose have the potential to distort its appearance and adversely affect the patient's self-image and self-esteem. Once life-threatening injuries are stabilized, a careful history and physical exam should be completed and treatment individualized. The ultimate objective of treatment is to achieve both functional and cosmetic restoration with timely diagnosis and repair. Immediate nasal reconstruction is ideal when medically possible because this decreases long-term

[Fifty years of plastic surgery in the Netherlands. III. Structural surgery of the genitalia].

Plastic surgeons have contributed to the constructive and reconstructive surgery of the external genitals. This development followed the increase of surgical-technical possibilities. Whereas in the past the possibilities were limited to transplantation of skin grafts and pedicled flaps, they have now been supplemented by free transplantation using microsurgical techniques. Other specialists have adopted the techniques developed by plastic surgeons. In future, in the structive surgery of genitals use will be made of the growing possibilities of transplantation of donor organs and the results of

Primary cutaneous zygomycosis in an immunodeficient infant: a case report and review of the literature.

We report a case of primary cutaneous zygomycosis caused by Rhizopus species in an infant with a hematological malignancy. Multiple surgical debridements, skin grafting, and intravenous antifungal therapy were necessary to ultimately eradicate the infection. Zygomycotic infections are an emerging concern in immunocompromised patients because of their increased incidence as well as their potential to cause substantial morbidity through both emotional distress and impaired functionality. Because resection is a cornerstone of treatment for zygomycosis, the authors anticipate a growing need for pl

Two Roads to One Specialty: A 9-year National Comparison of 1902 Integrated and Independent Plastic Surgery Resident Case Logs.

BACKGROUND: Plastic surgery residency training in the United States follows 2 primary pathways: the independent and integrated models. Although both aim to produce competent surgeons, differences in surgical case exposure between these two groups remain unclear. This study analyses surgical cases performed by independent and integrated plastic surgery residents across a 9-year span to compare operative experience across training pathways. METHODS: A retrospective national cohort study was conducted using Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education data from 2015 to 2023, encompassing

The Role of Fat Grafting in the Treatment of Keloid Scars and Venous Ulcers.

Autologous fat grafting is an increasingly popular practice in the field of plastic surgery. Since the 1980s, it has become one of the most commonly performed procedures by plastic surgeons. Fat grafting has applications in a variety of clinical scenarios, ranging from breast reconstruction to facial volume loss. Recently, the benefit of fat grafting has been employed in wound healing and the treatment of troublesome scars. In this article, we describe the role of fat grafting in the treatment of keloid scars and venous ulcers.

Indications and Use of Isotretinoin in Facial Plastic Surgery.

Isotretinoin is a first generation retinoid with pleiotropic effects on keratinocyte differentiation, proliferation, and activity of sebaceous glands. For years, there has been intense debate on whether the use of isotretinoin combined with cosmetic or surgical procedures is safe and potentially more efficient than either therapy alone. Due to delays in wound healing and keloid formation, conservative recommendations were not to combine isotretinoin with any plastic surgery or local treatment at 6 to 12 months after discontinuation of the drug. However, there is increasing evidence that a comb
