Police Discrimination, Misconduct, and Stigmatization of Female Sex Workers in Kenya: Associations with Delayed and Avoided Health Care Utilization and Lower Consistent Condom Use.

Discrimination and violence against sex workers by police are common in many populations and are associated with negative health outcomes, as well as being per se violations of human rights laws and norms. There is a close and mutually reinforcing nexus between legally actionable rights violations and stigma, and reducing human rights violations against sex workers likely requires both legal and societal interventions that address both. In this paper, we first aim to estimate levels of discrimination, violence, and stigma against women sex workers by police in Kenya. Second, we aim to estimate…

Effects of modern physical training on physical performance and training-related injuries in the Chinese people's armed police force: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: The Chinese People's Armed Police Force (PAP) undertakes high-intensity counter-terrorism, stability-maintenance and security tasks requiring exceptional physical fitness. However, conventional military physical training is monotonous in design, and training-related injury rates remain high (3,25). Modern physical training paradigms-Comprehensive Physical Training (CPT) and Preventive Training (PT)-have been gradually introduced into the PAP system, yet their combined effects have not been systematically quantified. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the effects of modern physical training (C…

Policing and nonfatal overdose in a community-based cohort of sex workers in Vancouver, Canada: influence of stigma and other intersecting systems of marginalization (2014-2024).

BACKGROUND: We evaluated the association between policing and recent (last 6 months) nonfatal overdose, and differences based on stigma and other intersecting systems of marginalization, among a cohort of sex workers in Canada. METHODS: Data were drawn from a cohort of sex workers in Vancouver, Canada (9/2014-2/2024). We used generalized linear mixed models to examine the relationship between police-related factors (interactions, displacement, and barriers to safer sex work transactions and harm reduction) and recent nonfatal overdose. Stratified models evaluated potential heterogeneity in as…

[Unnatural deaths must be investigated better--risk of crimes being missed. Examination of the police and the health care system management of deaths in three counties].

In 2008 only 55 % of all deaths not deemed to be natural in Sweden underwent a medicolegal autopsy. In the present study we describe and compare the characteristics of unnatural deaths in three counties through review of death certificates for unnatural deaths and, when applicable, corresponding police reports. The majority of unnatural deaths that were not reported to the police were among elderly decedents, with the deaths most often resulting from a fall-related fracture or head injury. One subgroup among these deaths that were not recognized as reportable by the involved physician, estimat…

Mapping violence and policing as an environmental-structural barrier to health service and syringe availability among substance-using women in street-level sex work.

BACKGROUND: Within street-based sex work and substance-using populations, there is growing evidence to support the role of place, both physical setting and social meanings attached to place, in mediating the effectiveness and reach of health and harm reduction services. METHODS: Social mapping was used to explore how health service and syringe availability may be impacted at the geographic level by avoidance of physical settings due to violence and policing among women in street-level sex work. Through a community-based research partnership and extensive peer-led outreach over a 6-month perio

Enduring Consequences From the War on Drugs: How Policing Practices Impact HIV Risk Among People Who Inject Drugs in Baltimore City.

BACKGROUND: Neighborhood-level characteristics, including police activity, are associated with HIV and Hepatitis C injection risk-behaviors among people who inject drugs (PWID). However, the pathways through which these neighborhood perceptions shape individual-level HIV risk behaviors are unclear. This study helps to explain perceived behaviors between perceived neighborhood police activity and HIV injection risk behavior (i.e., injection syringe/tool sharing in the previous 6 months). METHODS: A sample of (n = 366) PWIDs who self-reported recent use were recruited using community-based outr…

Prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder and associated factors among police officers in Central Gondar Zone, North West Ethiopia, 2023: institutional-based cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a psychiatric disorder that follows exposure to a traumatic or stressful life event. Police officers are exposed to a number of traumatic events that put them at risk of developing post-traumatic stress disorder. Previous studies have found the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder among police officers to be varied and inclusive. However, in Ethiopia, little is known about the prevalence of post-traumatic stress disorder and associated factors among police officers. Therefore, assessing the prevalence and associated factors of post-t…

Occupational and Ergonomic Factors Associated With Low Back Pain Among Car-patrol Police Officers: Findings From the Quebec Serve and Protect Low Back Pain Study.

OBJECTIVES: Low back pain (LBP) is frequent and burdensome among police officers, but occupational and ergonomic factors associated with LBP and its chronic symptoms have never been studied among these workers using a biopsychosocial model. This study aimed at exploring such factors associated with acute or subacute LBP and chronic low back pain (CLBP) among car-patrol police officers. METHODS: A web-based cross-sectional study was conducted among car-patrol officers working in the province of Quebec (Canada). Factors associated with acute or subacute LBP and CLBP (as opposed to absence of LB…

Adapting the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model of police-mental health collaboration in a low-income, post-conflict country: curriculum development in Liberia, West Africa.

OBJECTIVES: We sought to develop a curriculum and collaboration model for law enforcement and mental health services in Liberia, West Africa. METHODS: In 2013 we conducted key informant interviews with law enforcement officers, mental health clinicians, and mental health service users in Liberia, and facilitated a 3-day curriculum workshop. RESULTS: Mental health service users reported prior violent interactions with officers. Officers and clinicians identified incarceration and lack of treatment of mental health service users as key problems, and they jointly drafted a curriculum based upon

Examining Racism-Based Police Violence and Mental Health among Black African Emerging Adults in the United States: The Moderating Roles of Grit and Family Cohesion.

In the United States, Black Americans are disproportionately likely to experience racism-based police violence (RPV), which has led scholars and practitioners alike to call this a public health crisis. Although this is not a recent phenomenon, the existing literature has limited its examination of RPV exposure and mental health trauma to the Black American experience, ignoring that racial identity alone is not the only identity that is factored into racism-based violence against Black African individuals. This cross-sectional study, therefore, adds to the existing literature on RPV and trauma …

Police Harassment and Psychiatric, Sexual, and Substance Use Risk Among Black Sexual Minority Men and Black Transgender Women in the HIV Prevention Trials 061 Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Black sexual minority men and Black transgender women (BSMM/BTW) experience disproportionate levels of HIV/STI-related risk factors as well as police harassment (PH). PH is linked to psychiatric risk and could play a role in substance use, sexual risk behavior, and HIV/STI risk. METHODS: We used data from the HIV Prevention Trials Network 061(HPTN 061) study to examine associations between PH and HIV/STI-related outcomes. Using PH exposure measured at baseline and 6-month study visits, we examined an ordinal exposure (PH reported at both visits, PH reported at either visit, versus…

Bruises, abrasions, and scars in children aged 4-14 years in Denmark: A comparison between police-reported cases of physical child abuse and a control group.

Differentiating between abusive and accidental skin lesions in children presents significant challenges. Previous studies of skin lesion patterns have mainly focused on bruises in younger children. In this study, we compare the number, location, and distribution of recent (bruises and abrasions) and older (scars) skin lesions between police-reported cases of physical violence and controls of similar age (4-14 years) in a Danish setting. The study included 262 cases and 119 controls. Skin lesions in 19 body regions were assessed. Univariate and multivariate logistic regression models were condu…
