The MADS-box transcription factor CmFYF promotes the production of male flowers and inhibits the fruit development in melon (Cucumis melo L.).

The FOREVER YOUNG FLOWER (FYF/AGL42) gene plays an important role in regulating the flower development especially the flowering time, and senescence and abscission of floral organs. Melon is an important horticultural crop, and the flower development has an important influence on pollination, fertilization and final fruit yield. However, the function of FYF homolog is still unknown in melon. In this study, the characteristic of melon CmFYF was analyzed combining with molecular biology, developmental biology and biochemical tools. CmFYF was present in all detected tissues of melon, but its expr…

Toward unveiling transcriptome dynamics and regulatory modules at the maternal/filial interface of developing maize kernel.

The basal region of maize (Zea mays) kernels, which includes the pedicel, placenta-chalazal, and basal endosperm transfer layers, serves as the maternal/filial interface for nutrient transfer from the mother plant to the developing seed. However, transcriptome dynamics of this maternal/filial interface remain largely unexplored. To address this gap, we conducted high-temporal-resolution RNA sequencing of the basal and upper kernel regions between 4 and 32 days after pollination and deeply analyzed transcriptome dynamics of the maternal/filial interface. Utilizing 790 specifically and highly ex…

Why are nasal and bronchial symptoms mostly perennial in patients with monosensitization to Olea europaea pollen allergens?

In the last few years interest in the clinical aspects of Olea europaea (O.e.) pollen allergy has increased. For many years we have observed … e patients showed perennial type of clinical symptoms without any particular worsening during olive pollination season. We found a high degree of statistical significance between the results of SPT/sNPT and serum specific IgE determination. Many patients exhibited a late response after sNPT. No definitive data were derived from our findings, even though the o …

Resident viruses, but not honeybee-associated viruses, impair solitary bee fitness in the field.

Viruses can impact individual host fitness and host population dynamics, especially following host shifts. Thus, the decline of wild solitary bee populations over the last few decades may be linked to viruses or other pathogens. However, evidence for the impact of viruses-transmitted from other genera or resident in solitary bees-on their fitness remains scarce. Here, by assessing solitary bee (Osmia cornuta) foraging, offspring sex ratio, survival and body mass across seven locations in northern Switzerland, we show that resident viruses-but not honeybee-associated viruses-can impact fitness

Significant fine-scale population differentiation in two common bumblebee species (B. pascuorum and B. lapidarius) detected in Northern Europe.

Bumblebees are keystone pollinators which facilitate the reproduction of a wide range of wild and agricultural plants. Their abundance and diversity have been severely reduced by anthropogenic stressors such as widespread land-use change and habitat fragmentation. However, we lack a comprehensive understanding of population structure and local adaptation in bumblebees inhabiting human-altered landscapes. Here, we discover significant fine-scale (e.g. ~300 km) population structure within two common bumblebee species, Bombus lapidarius and Bombus pascuorum, by analysing whole genome data of 106

Comparing Machine Learning Using UAVs to Ground Survey Methods to Quantify Milkweed Stem Density and Habitat Characteristics in ROWs.

Monarch butterflies have declined in both eastern and western populations. Conservation initiatives that support this imperiled species are being implemented in lands managed by the energy and transportation sectors. Vegetation management strategies that encourage the presence of milkweed (Asclepias spp.), the larval host of monarch butterflies (Danaus plexippus), or floral resources to support pollinators are being practiced across North America; however, survey methods to evaluate the success of these strategies vary in accuracy and scalability. In this study, we compared five methods to qua

Design of a Bacteriophage-Based Product for Biocontrol of Fire Blight and Black Rot.

Controlling phytopathogenic bacteria is essential for safeguarding crops and minimizing economic losses in agriculture. Although chemical pesticides are effective, they have adverse effects on ecosystems, beneficial organisms such as pollinators, and natural pathogen predators, creating a need for sustainable alternatives. Bacteriophages ɸEF1 and ɸEF2 (infecting Erwinia amylovora, the fire blight pathogen), and ɸXF1 (targeting Xanthomonas campestris, the black rot pathogen) have shown promise as biocontrol agents in vitro and in vivo. However, to be effective in the field these phages must mai

Microbiome of Dipteran vectors associated with integron and antibiotic resistance genes in South Korea.

The spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) across the environment and the role that organisms that interact with humans play as reservoirs of resistant bacteria pose important threats to public health. Flies are two-winged insects composing the order Diptera, which includes synanthropic species with significant ecological roles as pollinators, vectors, and decomposers. Here, we used iSeq100 metabarcoding to characterize the microbiome of six dipteran species in South Korea: Lucilia sericata, Lucilia illustris, Culex pipiens, Aedes vexans, Psychoda alternata and Clogmia albipunctata. Dwarfism in Pinus taeda originates from independent somatic mutations co-localized in a shared genomic region.

Somatic mutations in long-lived conifers are rarely characterized yet offer a unique window into the spontaneous genetic forces that shape variation in plants. In Pinus taeda, dwarf phenotypes originate from abnormal branches, colloquially known as "witches' brooms", where progeny derived from the affected branch segregate for dwarfism in an apparent Mendelian 1:1 ratio. In this study, we genotyped six unrelated wind-pollinated families segregating for dwarfism using single-nucleotide polymorphism markers that had been previously positioned on a linkage map. Trait-loci association analyses ide

Effect of indoxacarb and commercial pesticide adjuvant on the honeybee (Apis mellifera) temperature preference, CO2 emission and expression of detoxification-related genes.

BACKGROUND: Plant Protection Products (PPPs) consist not solely of active ingredients. Some of the other ingredients of the finished formulations are intended to enhance the efficacy of the main active ingredient. The PPPs' effects impact honeybees that pollinate crops by exposing them to a complex of numerous chemical compounds. Depending on their composition, PPPs affect these insects in various ways. The present study estimated the effect of sublethal doses of insecticide (Active Ingredient (AI): indoxacarb) and commercial adjuvant (AI: alkylbenzene sulphonic acid sodium salt) applied indiv

Design and Synthesis of Indole-Containing Tetrahydrothiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine Mesoionics against Hemipteran Pests.

Mesoionic insecticides have emerged as promising pest nAChR modulators devoid of cross-resistance with neonicotinoids, demonstrating exceptional efficacy against sap-feeding insects. Nevertheless, the tetrahydrothiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine structure remains underexplored within this chemotype. Here, we report an indole-based scaffold hopping of tetrahydrothiazolo[3,2-a]pyrimidine, which leads to the development of a series of novel mesoionics. Their insecticidal potency is evaluated against the hemipteran pest Acyrthosiphon pisum (A. pisum) and Sogatella furcifera (S. furcifera). Derivative G1 ex

Whole-genome duplication enables rapid evolution of male-biased sex allocation.

Sex allocation in hermaphrodites involves a balance between fitness gained through male and female functions. Whole-genome duplication (WGD) might disrupt such a gradually evolved balance, if the relatively instantaneous effects of WGD on cell and organ sizes affect sexual functions differently. We studied sex allocation patterns in intraspecific populations of neo-autotetraploids and their diploid progenitors within Galax urceolata. Floral organ sizes and numbers were measured using light microscopy and genome sizes verified with flow cytometry. Relative to diploids, autotetraploids had propo

Avoiding the tragedies of parasite tolerance in Darwinian beekeeping.

Bee declines have been partly attributed to the impacts of invasive or emerging parasite outbreaks. For western honeybees, Apis mellifera, major losses are associated with the virus-vectoring mite, Varroa destructor. In response, beekeepers have focused breeding efforts aimed at conferring resistance to this key parasite. One method of many is survival-based beekeeping where colonies that survive despite significant Varroa infestations produce subsequent colonies. We argue that this 'hands-off' approach will not always lead to Varroa resistance evolving but rather tolerance. Tolerance minimize

RNAi-Based Bioinsecticides for Controlling Vector-Borne Diseases.

Vector-borne diseases account for 17% of all infectious diseases. The most effective strategies for controlling these diseases have focused on decreasing the vector population, primarily through the use of insecticides. Many insecticides have no specific targets, harming pollinators and beneficial insects. Additionally, the vector populations are developing resistance, reducing the effectiveness of these strategies and increasing ecological damage. Double-strand RNA (dsRNA) is widely used in insects to study gene function by knocking down their expression. Recently, this technology has been ap

Enhancing Honey Bee Health: Evaluating Pollen Substitute Diets in Field and Cage Experiments.

Honey bees (Apis mellifera L.) play vital roles as agricultural pollinators and honey producers. However, global colony losses are increasing due to multiple stressors, including malnutrition. Our study evaluated the effects of four pollen substitute diets (Diet 1, Diet 2, Diet 3, and Control) through field and cage experiments, analyzing 11 parameters and 21 amino acids. Notably, Diet 1 demonstrated significantly superior performance in the field experiment, including the number of honey bees, brood area, consumption, preference, colony weight, and honey production. In the cage experiment, Di

The Greasy Pole Syndrome in Alliaria petiolata (Brassicaceae): The Pubescence and Wax Coverage on Stems Reduce Invasion by Lasius niger Ants.

To reduce negative effects of floral visitation by ants, which do not serve as reliable cross-pollinators, some plants have developed a non-floral, stem-based defense mechanism called greasy pole syndrome. In the present study, we examined the effects of two surface features (trichomes and three-dimensional epicuticular wax coverage) on stems of Alliaria petiolata plants on visiting frequencies, travelled distances, and running velocities of Lasius niger ants. The experiments were performed with stem samples prepared from different (apical and basal) stem portions showing different surface mor

Naturally Occurring Triploidy in Cannabis.

Polyploidy is a significant evolutionary process in plants that involves the duplication of genomic content and has been recognized as a key mechanism driving plant diversification and adaptation. In natural populations, polyploids frequently arise from unreduced gametes, which subsequently fuse with reduced or unreduced gametes, resulting in triploid or tetraploid offspring, respectively. Cannabis sativa L. is a diploid species, but recent work using artificially induced polyploidy has demonstrated its potential advantages in an agricultural setting. Further, recent work has identified that s
