[Scolytidae and Platypodidae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) of two conservation areas in Tabasco, Mexico].

The Scolytinae and Platypodinae are group of widely distributed tropical insects that are capable of using a wide range of hosts. The study of diversity associated with conservation sites allows estimating the richness and abundance of species, their population dynamics as well as understanding the population behavior over time. The species richness and abundance of Scolytinae and Platypodinae was studied in the Chontalpa Ecological Reserve (REC) and the José Narciso Rovirosa Botanical Garden (JBU) in Tabasco, Mexico. Insects were captured with ethyl alcohol traps. A total of 7 057 specimens b

First Evidence of an Established Population of Ixodes scapularis (Acari: Ixodidae) in South Dakota.

Ixodes scapularis Say (Acari: Ixodidae) is the most important vector of human disease in the United States. Recent efforts by public health officials to determine its presence on a county-by-county basis have been undertaken to assist in Lyme disease risk assessment. Recent modeling efforts show that South Dakota can potentially support populations of I. scapularis based on favorable climatic conditions and presence of suitable hosts to support tick populations within the state. We provide the first documentation of an established population of I. scapularis in Clay County, SD, providing only

Diaphorina citri (Hemiptera: Liviidae) Abundance in Puerto Rico Declines with Elevation.

Diaphorina citri Kuwayama is the primary vector of Huanglongbing, the most devastating disease of citrus. D. citri populations in Puerto Rico were monitored with yellow sticky traps on citrus trees or other psyllid host plants at different elevations, ranging from 10 to 880 m above sea level. Trapping was conducted in March through May of 2013 and 2014 when psyllid populations usually are highest. Population levels of D. citri, based on the trapping data, varied among the sites, and there was a strong trend in both years for decreasing psyllid abundance with increased elevation based on the nu

Vegetation habitats and small mammals in a plague endemic area in Western Usambara Mountains, Tanzania.

Human plague still exists in different parts of the world, including some landscapes in north-eastern Tanzania. Wherever the hotspot of plague, small mammals seem to play a key role as host. The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between vegetation habitats types and small mammals in a plague endemic area of Lushoto District in Tanzania. A combination of field survey and Landsat images was used to identify the vegetation habitats. Small mammals were trapped in the mapped vegetation units, and identified. In total, six main types of vegetation habitats were investigated

Interplant movement and spatial distribution of alate and apterous morphs of Nasonovia ribisnigri (Homoptera: Aphididae) on lettuce.

Knowledge on colonization modes and interplant movement of Nasonovia ribisnigri can contribute to the development of optimal control of this pest. The aim of this study was to determine the spatio-temporal distribution and the mode of spread between adult morphs of Nasonovia ribisnigri, comparing spring and autumn lettuce protected crops. The spatial and temporal pattern was analyzed using the spatial analysis by distance indices (SADIE) methodology and other related displacement indices. The population size of N. ribisnigri was greater in the autumn than in the spring growing seasons due to m

Habitat associations of eastern equine encephalitis transmission in Walton County Florida.

Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus (EEEV; family Togaviridae, genus Alphavirus) a highly pathogenic mosquito-borne virus is endemic to eastern North America. The ecology of EEEV in Florida differs from that in other parts of the United States; EEEV in the northeastern United States is historically associated with freshwater wetlands. No formal test of habitat associations of EEEV in Florida has been reported. Geographical Information Sciences (GIS) was used in conjunction with sentinel chicken EEEV seroconversion rate data as a means to examine landscape features associated with EEEV transmissi

[The presence of mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) in flood containment reservoirs in the eastern region of the City of São Paulo, Brazil].

INTRODUCTION: Alterations in the environment contribute to changes in weather patterns, which cause an increase in rainfall, which causes flooding. Flooding has been addressed by building reservoirs, called piscinões, to contain the excess rain. In this report, we evaluated the Culicidae fauna of epidemiological importance in the reservoirs of Caguaçu and Inhumas. METHODS: Monthly collections were performed in both reservoirs, which are situated in the Eastern section of the City of São Paulo. Monthly collections of Culicidae were undertaken using the entomological scoop method and a battery

The snail Potamopyrgus antipodarum grows faster and is more active in the shade, independent of food quality.

Ecological stoichiometry has advanced food web ecology by emphasising the importance of food quality over food quantity for herbivores. Here, we focus on the effects of abiotic factors such as nutrients and light (known to influence food quality) on grazer growth rates. As model organism we used the mudsnail Potamopyrgus antipodarum that is native to New Zealand but invasive elsewhere. In a stream channel experiment in New Zealand, we manipulated light (two levels) and nutrients (four levels) to achieve a range of primary producer carbon: nutrient ratios and added mudsnails (3 densities + ungr

[Damage of Rhopalosiphum padi (L.) (Hemiptera: Aphididae) on wheat plants related to duration time and density of infestation].

Aphids are considered relevant pests on wheat either by direct damage through sap sucking or by indirect damage vectoring BYDV (Barley yellow dwarf virus). Rhopalosiphum padi L. has been observed infesting wheat fields with an increasing frequency. The knowledge and the available technology, besides being more related to other aphids species already recognized as pests, they are insufficient to control the specific problem of R. padi. Thus, this work evaluated the effects of feeding duration and infestation densities of R. padi on seedlings of wheat cv. Embrapa 16. Grain yield, yield component

Efficiency of drag sampling for estimating population sizes of Ixodes pacificus (Acari: Ixodidae) nymphs in leaf litter.

Drag sampling is a commonly used method to obtain relative estimates of the density of questing nymphal Ixodes scapularis Say and I pacificus Cooley & Kohls ticks, which are primary vectors of Lyme disease spirochetes to humans in North America. However, the efficiency of drag sampling in determining absolute population densities of questing nymphs has not been evaluated previously. Therefore, we assessed the efficiency of a single drag-sampling occasion to estimate the total population size of questing I pacificus nymphs in a leaf-litter habitat in California. Repeated daily removal sampling

[The spread of Phlebotomus papatasi Scop., 1786 through the territory of Central Asia and southern Kazakhstan].

The data on distribution of the main vector of zoonotic cutaneous leishmaniasis (ZCL) Phlebotomus papatasi through Central Asia and southern Kazakhstan are presented. The highest indices of density of this species (100 and more specimen per stick trap) were observed only in the Tejen oasis, rather high ones (1-10, 10-100) in the river valleys and at the foothill, and the lowest one (0.01-0.1)--over the desert territory where ZCL was not practically found. Using these data 2 maps were prepared. The first map shows the pattern of Ph. papatasi geographical distribution with the use of a relative

Influence of claw clipping, stocking density and feeding space on the incidence of scabby hips in broilers.

1. The aetiology of scabby hips was studied in broilers by scratching the skin with chicken claws, clipping the birds' claws and varying the effects of stocking density and food trough allocation. 2. Gentle scratching twice a week resulted in skin lesions that could not be distinguished from clinical scabby hips at slaughter. Interaction between birds appeared to be a prerequisite for the skin condition to develop. 3. Clipping of the claws at day 25 could almost completely prevent scabby hips at day 45 when the birds were slaughtered. 4. No positive correlation was found between feather condit

Seasonal vector density and disease incidence patterns of malaria in an area of Zimbabwe.

Anopheline mosquitoes were studied in an area of Zimbabwe to correlate their population densities with seasonality in malaria incidence. Four trapping methods were employed for adult mosquitoes: pit traps, outdoor and indoor man-baited nets and a sheep-baited net. Anopheles funestus exhibited two population peaks during the year, one in March and the other in September/October. The following over-all proportions of the An. gambiae complex were recorded: An. gambiae Giles (2.5%), An. arabiensis Patton (14.3%) and An. guadriannulatus Theobald (83.2%). Peak populations were observed in March, wit

Demographic Structure of Black and Gold Howler Monkeys (Alouatta caraya) in Northeastern Argentina: A Post-Disturbance Baseline Across Contrasting Landscapes.

Yellow fever (YF) outbreaks and anthropogenic fires are major sources of mortality in Neotropical primates, yet their legacy effects on population structure and reproductive output remain poorly quantified. We conducted a comparative assessment of black and gold howler monkey population (Alouatta caraya) across three population contexts in northeastern Argentina: (1) Yellow fever-affected, (2) Yellow fever-free populations, (3) a fire-affected population in Iberá wetlands. Group size was similar across sites, with a median of 9 individuals (range: 3-15). Multimale-multifemale groups predominat
