Pathological correlates of late-onset dementia in a multicentre, community-based population in England and Wales. Neuropathology Group of the Medical Research Council Cognitive Function and Ageing Study (MRC CFAS).

BACKGROUND: We have undertaken a large unselected, community-based neuropathology study in an elderly (70-103 years) UK population in relation to prospectively evaluated dementia status. The study tests the assumption that dementing disorders as defined by current diagnostic protocols underlie this syndrome in the community at large. METHODS: Respondents in the Medical Research Council Cognitive Function and Ageing Study were approached for consent to examine the brain at necropsy. Dementia status was assigned by use of the automated geriatric examination for computer-assisted taxonomy algori

Periventricular leukomalacia causes visual impairment in preterm children. A study on the aetiologies of visual impairment in a population-based group of preterm children born 1989-95 in the county of Värmland, Sweden.

PURPOSE: To determine the causes of visual impairment in a population-based group of visually impaired preterm children. METHODS: Ophthalmological examination and magnetic resonance imaging or computed tomography of the brain were performed in all visually impaired preterm children born 1989-95 in Värmland. RESULTS: Ten of 18 children had periventricular leukomalacia affecting the optic radiation, six had other lesions or malformations in the posterior visual pathways/cortex, but no child had visually impairing retinopathy of prematurity. CONCLUSION: We conclude that cerebral lesions or mal

Anxiety and depression screening across diverse populations: Testing measurement and structural invariance of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 across Black and White groups.

The Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7) and Patient Health Questionnaire-9 are two of the most commonly used measures of anxiety and depression in clinical practice and research. Although the measures are frequently used, little is known about their measurement invariance across diverse populations. Because both measures were originally developed and validated in largely White samples, it is necessary to ensure that the psychometric properties of the measures are similar across populations. In the present study, we use a national sample of college students from the Healthy Minds Study to ex

Population structure of KPC carbapenemase-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae in a long-term acute-care rehabilitation facility: identification of a new lineage of clonal group 101, associated with local hyperendemicity.

In this work, we used a whole-genome sequencing (WGS) approach to study the features of KPC-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae (KPC-Kp) spreading in a large Italian long-term acute-care rehabilitation facility (LTACRF), and to track the dynamics of dissemination within this setting. Thirty-eight, non-replicated, KPC-Kp isolates from colonized patients (either already colonized at admission or colonized during admission), collected during 2016, were subjected to antimicrobial-susceptibility testing and WGS. All isolates were resistant to β-lactams, with the exception of ceftazidime/avibactam (97.4

Population-based study for human papillomavirus (HPV) infection in young women in Japan: A multicenter study by the Japanese human papillomavirus disease education research survey group (J-HERS).

A multi-center study was conducted to examine 6,628 eligible Japanese women aged from 16 to 50 years for uterine cervical abnormality and HPV infection with a liquid based-cytology test and a novel HPV test using the PCR-SSOP-Luminex(®) method identifying 31 HPV genotypes. In 3,047 normal subjects, the overall prevalence across all HPV types was 25%, while that of the common 13 high-risk (Common-13HR) types (HPV-16, 18. 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, and 68) was 17%, and that of the definite high-risk (Definite-HR) types (HPV-16, 18. 31, 33, 35, 45, 52, and 58) was 12%. Relationships of DNA ploidy, S-phase fraction and hormone receptor status to tumor stage in breast cancers detected by population screening. The South-East Sweden Breast Cancer Group.

Cellular DNA content was analyzed by flow cytometry and estrogen and progesterone receptors by an immuno-biochemical method (EIA) in a consecutive series of 807 frozen breast-cancer samples. Before the beginning of the study, a mammography screening program had been introduced in the region where the tumors were diagnosed. Forty percent of the tumors were judged as DNA diploid, of which 86% were ER-positive. The proportion of ER-positive tumors among non-diploids was significantly lower, or 73% (p less than 0.001). S-phase fraction (SPF) was estimated in 691 cases (86%), with an overall mean o

Age groups differences in the prevalence and popularity of individual tobacco product use in young adult and adult marijuana and tobacco co-users and tobacco-only users: Findings from Wave 4 of the population assessment of tobacco and health study.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use is high among marijuana and tobacco users, compared to tobacco-only users. This study examined the relative ranking (based on prevalence) of past 30-day tobacco product use separately across young adult and older adult past 30-day marijuana and tobacco co-users and tobacco-only users. METHOD: Prevalence and relative ranking of past 30-day use of eight different tobacco products and blunts were examined in young adult (ages 18-24) and adults (ages 25 +) tobacco users who did and did not report past 30-day marijuana use (unweighted n = 33,644) from Wave 4 of the Populati

Which groups affected by Potentially Traumatic Events (PTEs) are most at risk for a lack of social support? A prospective population-based study on the 12-month prevalence of PTEs and risk factors for a lack of post-event social support.

OBJECTIVES: Little is known about the 12-month prevalence of potentially traumatic events (PTEs) and to what extent the type of PTE is a risk factor for post-event lack of social support. In addition, it is largely unknown if pre-event mental health problems and loneliness, and demographics are risk factors for a lack of support. Aim of the present prospective study is to fill these gaps in evidence-based knowledge. METHODS: A survey was conducted among a large random sample of the Dutch adult population (i.e. the longitudinal LISS panel) in March-April 2018, and linked with pre-event mental

Histopathologic subtyping of cervical adenocarcinoma reveals increasing incidence rates of endometrioid tumors in all age groups: a population based study with review of all nonsquamous cervical carcinomas in Norway from 1966 to 1970, 1976 to 1980, and 1986 to 1990.

BACKGROUND: The effect of histopathologic review and subclassification on incidence rates for nonsquamous cell carcinoma (non-SCC) of the uterine cervix in the Norwegian population was evaluated. METHODS: All non-SCC from three 5-year periods (1966-70, 1976-80, and 1986-90) were reviewed, classified, and graded. RESULTS: Incidence rates were 1.2, 1.2, and 1.7 per 100,000 for adenocarcinoma and 0.1, 0.3, and 0.5 per 100,000 for other carcinomas in the three periods. Adenocarcinomas increased in all age groups, most markedly in women younger than 35 years. Incidence rates for both major subgro

Development of Food Group Tree-Based Analysis and Its Association with Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) and Co-Morbidities in a South Indian Population: A Large Case-Control Study.

BACKGROUND: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a global problem growing in parallel to the epidemics of obesity and diabetes, with South Asians being particularly susceptible. Nutrition and behaviour are important modifiers of the disease; however, studies to date have only described dietary patterns and nutrients associated with susceptibility to NAFLD. METHODS: This cross-sectional case-control study included 993 NAFLD patients and 973 healthy controls from Trivandrum (India). Dietary data was collected using a locally validated food frequency questionnaire. A tree-based classific

Role of the screening with coronary computed tomography angiography on lipid management and risk factors control in an asymptomatic Chinese population: a community-based, parallel-group, open-label, randomized clinical trial (RESPECT2).

BACKGROUND: Lipid management based on cardiovascular risk level is the cornerstone of primary prevention of coronary artery disease (CAD), while the accuracy and adherence of traditional cardiovascular risk stratification have been questioned. Prevention strategies based on imaging screening for atherosclerotic plaques are found to be more objective and adherent in recent studies. This trial aims to investigate the role of coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) in guiding the primary prevention of CAD in a randomized controlled design. METHODS: Approximately 3400 middle-aged asymptom

Incidence of ulcerative colitis and indeterminate colitis in four counties of southeastern Norway, 1990-93. A prospective population-based study. The Inflammatory Bowel South-Eastern Norway (IBSEN) Study Group of Gastroenterologists.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of ulcerative colitis (UC) has been difficult to interpret because prospective studies have only been performed during the past 3 decades. Geographic variations may therefore be due to differences in study design. METHOD: From 1 January 1990 to 31 December 1993 all new cases of UC in four counties in southeastern Norway were prospectively registered. Cases diagnosed as indeterminate colitis (IND) when endoscopy and histopathology were inconclusive or diverged with regard to diagnosis of UC or Crohn's disease (CD) were also included in the study. RESULTS: A total of

Artificial Intelligence-Guided Analysis of WNT Pathway Alterations: Associations with Genomic Burden and Survival Across African American and Non-Hispanic White Populations, Age Groups, and FOLFOX Treatment in Colorectal Cancer.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) exhibits substantial heterogeneity across ancestry, age at onset, and treatment exposure. Although dysregulation of the WNT signaling pathway is a hallmark of CRC, its associations with genomic burden and survival across diverse clinical contexts remain incompletely understood. We analyzed 2562 CRC cases from AACR Project GENIE and cBioPortal, stratified by ancestry (African American [AA] and non-Hispanic White [NHW]), age at onset (early vs. late), and FOLFOX treatment status. Associations between WNT pathway alterations, genomic burden (mutation count, tumor mutationa
