Pediatric concussion is a significant health concern for parents, medical providers, and schools. This study was designed to gain insight into gender differences in perspectives of children and adolescents recovering from concussion. Specifically, the study explored whether males and females reported different symptom loads for physical symptoms and quality of life after concussion. The Pediatric Life After Concussion Evaluation Scale (PLACES) and the Post Concussion Symptom Scale (PCSS) were completed by 277 participants ages 9-21, with a mean age of 14.8 years. The sample was 47.5% female an

Pediatric concussion is a major public health concern. Despite the prevalence of behavior problems following concussion and their potential role in prolonged symptoms, little is known about how child and adolescent behavior may impact post-concussion recovery. We sought to examine change in behavioral and emotional functioning in a sample of children ages 5 to <18 years with concussion. This study reports on data collected as part of a larger single-site prospective longitudinal cohort study. Participants were recruited from the Emergency Department (ED) of a tertiary children's hospital and c

Mild traumatic brain injuries (mTBIs) commonly occur in children and adolescents and can result in persistent cognitive symptoms. The neurophysiological changes that underlie persistent post-concussive symptoms (PPCS) have not been characterized. Our objective was to compare working-memory related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) response in children with persistent symptoms after mTBI at one month post-injury to children with typical recovery and healthy controls. This was a prospective, controlled cohort study of children with mTBI at one month post-injury. PPCS was defined as ch

OBJECTIVES: Previous older adult studies have examined outcome from moderate-to-severe traumatic brain injury (TBI), but fewer have focused on the effects of milder brain injuries. This study examined age-related differences in symptom reporting and whether symptoms are differentially related to functional outcome based on age.
MATERIALS & METHODS: Patients presenting with a head injury at the Tampere University Hospital emergency department (N = 325, aged 18-100) were evaluated at 1 week post injury on the Modified Rankin Scale and Rivermead Post Concussion Symptoms Questionnaire (RPQ).

OBJECTIVE: Fear avoidance behavior is associated with more severe postconcussion symptoms after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). However, it remains unclear when after injury fear avoidance behavior becomes a barrier to recovery. This study investigated changes in early fear avoidance behavior after mTBI and its associations with postconcussion symptoms.
METHOD: Adults with concussion (N = 308) were prospectively recruited from an outpatient concussion clinic in Ontario, Canada. They completed measures assessing fear avoidance behavior (Fear Avoidance Behavior after Traumatic Brain Injury

INTRODUCTION: Persistent concussion symptoms (PCS) after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) interfere with daily functioning. The study aimed to replicate findings of our previous work showing the efficacy of an intensive exposure therapy for PCS.
METHOD: A replication was conducted with four participants (age M = 25.5, time-since-injury M = 13.25), using a multiple-baseline multi-phase (A-B-C-D-E) single-case experimental design. A randomly assigned baseline (A) preceded the 4-week exposure intervention (B - exploration, C - active exposure, D - booster) conducted by psychologists, with a 4-

Cognitive symptoms are common after mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) and can interfere with return to work. Factors underlying these symptoms are poorly understood. This prospective observational study explored relationships between illness perceptions, coping style, and cognitive symptom reporting in mTBI, including when controlling for sex and psychological distress. Individuals with mTBI (n = 70) and trauma controls (n = 42) were assessed 6-10 weeks post-injury. Measures included the Brief-COPE, the Illness Perceptions Questionnaire-Revised (IPQ-R), and subjective cognitive and post-concu

Background: Although concussion symptoms often resolve within 4-6 weeks, for a minority of patients, persistent postconcussion symptoms (PPCS), such as headaches, fatigue, and mood disturbances, may continue for months or years following a head injury. Rehabilitation of this group-often female-is crucial for reducing health and gender disparities in concussion recovery. A recent report by the National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health showed that the use of complementary health approaches, such as yoga and meditation, has substantially increased in the last two decades. Little is

IMPORTANCE: Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a common presentation in which it is clinically difficult at presentation to identify patients at risk for persistent symptoms, defined as lasting longer than 30 days. Few studies report the time period from injury to presentation; thus, it may be useful to determine early findings that identify patients who are likely to have persistent 30-day symptoms.
OBJECTIVE: To identify parameters associated with persistent 30-day symptoms in adult emergency department (ED) patients presenting shortly after a mild TBI (mTBI).

BACKGROUND: Several studies indicate that approximately two-thirds of individuals with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI) will develop chronic pain, which is often debilitating and a primary factor in long-term disability. Patients with mTBI can suffer concurrently from multiple pain types, such as chronic neuropathic (central or peripheral), nociceptive, or nociplastic pain; however, the prevailing pain types in mTBI patients remain undetermined. This knowledge void limits the formulation of effective therapies for mTBI-related pain.
OBJECTIVE: We aimed to identify the predominant pain mecha

BACKGROUND: Athletes who are diagnosed with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are at increased risk of concussion compared to other athletes. Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing (ImPACT) is a widely used concussion tool, but it relies on pre-injury baseline testing that can be affected by psychiatric conditions. This research aims to determine if there are differences in pre-injury testing composite scores in student-athletes with ADHD compared to those without ADHD diagnosis.
METHODS: We obtained 11,563 pre-season ImPACT assessments of 7,454 student-athle

OBJECTIVE: Although a majority of individuals recover from a concussion within weeks of the index injury, a substantial minority of patients report persistent postconcussion symptoms. Some of these symptoms may reflect a diagnosis of functional neurological disorder (FND). The authors evaluated the relationship between persistent postconcussion symptoms and FND symptoms.
METHODS: In this retrospective chart review, the authors characterized demographic and clinical information from 50 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of FND whose functional neurological symptoms started after a concussion.

OBJECTIVES: Pain is still a neglected problem in mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). In this cross-sectional study, we examined the frequency of musculoskeletal pain in a sample of adult patients with persistent cognitive symptoms after mTBI and whether pain level affected cognition.
METHODS: The participants were 23 adult patients aged 18-50 referred to brain injury rehabilitation clinics for neuropsychological assessment after having sustained an mTBI. A non-injured control group (n = 29) was recruited through advertisements. The patients were, on average, assessed 22 months after trauma. A
