Psychological processes mediate the impact of familial risk, social circumstances and life events on mental health.

BACKGROUND: Despite widespread acceptance of the 'biopsychosocial model', the aetiology of mental health problems has provoked debate amongst researchers and practitioners for decades. The role of psychological factors in the development of mental health problems remains particularly contentious, and to date there has not been a large enough dataset to conduct the necessary multivariate analysis of whether psychological factors influence, or are influenced by, mental health. This study reports on the first empirical, multivariate, test of the relationships between the key elements of the biosp

Facilitating psychological adjustment for breast cancer patients through empathic communication and uncertainty reduction.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the degree to which breast cancer patients' psychological well-being is facilitated through empathic provider communication. We explored symptom/prognostic uncertainty reduction as a mechanism through which provider communication influences patient psychological adjustment. Additionally, we tested if treatment status moderates this relationship. METHODS: Informed by uncertainty in illness theory, current (n = 121) and former (n = 187) breast cancer patients completed questionnaires about perceptions of their oncologists' empathy and their symptom burden, uncert

Psychological status of patients with nephrotic syndrome undergoing percutaneous renal biopsy.

BACKGROUND: Nephrotic syndrome (NS) is a common clinical disease with four main clinical manifestations: hypoalbuminemia (<30 g/L), macro-proteinuria (>3.5 g/24 h), edema, and hyperlipidemia. There is a variety of pathological types that are associated with NS. Percutaneous renal biopsy (PRB) plays an important role in clinical practice in that it can be used to establish a histological diagnosis, to provide information for an ultimate NS diagnosis, and subsequent prognosis. Our aim was to observe the psychological status of patients with NS before and after PRB and investigate the factors aff

The effects of chair yoga practice on stress reduction among high school teachers in Vietnam: a preliminary quasi-experimental study.

BACKGROUND: Vietnamese teachers face substantial and persistent work-related stress, yet brief, scalable mind - body interventions have been underexplored in this context. This preliminary study aimed to evaluate the effects of chair yoga practice on stress reduction and the sustainability of benefits with ongoing practice among high school teachers in Vietnam. METHODS: Using a quasi-experimental design, 41 teachers participated in a five-day, school-based chair yoga intervention. Psychological distress was assessed with the DASS-10, and brief written reflections were collected at baseline, i

Effector-related sequence learning in a bimanual-bisequential serial reaction time task.

In a bimanual-bisequential version of the serial reaction time (SRT) task participants performed two uncorrelated key-press sequences simultaneously, one with fingers of the left hand and the other with fingers of the right hand. Participants responded to location-based imperative stimuli. When two such stimuli appeared in each trial, the results suggest independent learning of the two sequences and the occurrence of intermanual transfer. Following extended practice in Experiment 2, transfer of acquired sequence knowledge was not complete. Also in Experiment 2, when only one stimulus appeared

Neural substrates of choking under pressure: A 7T-fMRI study.

Performance decrement under excessive psychological pressure is known as "choking," yet its mechanisms and neural foundations remain underexplored. Hypothesizing that changes in the internal model could induce choking, we conducted a 7 T functional MRI introducing excessive pressure through a rare Jackpot condition that offers high rewards for successful performance. Twenty-nine volunteers underwent a visual reaching task. We monitored practice and main sessions to map the task's internal model through learning. Participants were pre-informed of four potential reward conditions upon success at

Psychosocial impact of chronic oral mucosal pain disorders: Associations with oral health related quality of life, anxiety, and depression.

BACKGROUND: Chronic oral mucosal pain disorders, including Burning Mouth Syndrome (BMS), Oral Lichen Planus (OLP), Atypical Odontalgia, and Persistent Idiopathic Facial Pain, are debilitating conditions that significantly impair oral health-related quality of life (OHRQoL). These disorders are frequently associated with psychological distress, particularly anxiety and depression; however, studies integrating assessments of OHRQoL with psychological morbidity remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the impact of chronic oral mucosal pain disorders on OHRQoL, anxiety, and depression, and to iden

The Psychological Impact of Male Infertility: A Narrative Review.

Male infertility is a major health concern worldwide. While biological causes are well understood, the psychological aspects receive less focus. This gap is evident in clinical practice and research, where emotional, social, and mental health issues linked to male infertility are often neglected or inadequately managed. This review aims to highlight the psychological effects of male infertility, emphasizing mental health, emotional well-being, and the sociocultural factors influencing men's experiences. A comprehensive literature search was conducted using PubMed and Web of Science, encompassi

Psychological management of patients with chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS): a systematic review.

OBJECTIVES: Chronic prostatitis/chronic pelvic pain syndrome (CP/CPPS) is a complex condition. Despite recommendations for the inclusion of non-pharmacological treatment in the management of CP/CPPS, the focus has predominantly been on the inclusion of physical therapies with minimal discussion of psychological interventions. Therefore, this systematic review aimed to evaluate peer-reviewed studies of psychological interventions for men with CP/CPPS to determine their therapeutic efficacy and quality of intervention. METHODS: The review was registered in PROSPERO and based on PRISMA 2020 prot

Psychological interventions for people with motor neuron disease: a scoping review.

Motor neuron disease (MND) is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative condition with no known cure. MND can affect every aspect of a person's life and has been associated with a wide range of psychological difficulties, which can occur from pre-diagnosis through to the condition's later stages. However, very little research has been conducted on psychological interventions for people with MND (pwMND). This paper aimed to provide the first review specifically targeting psychological interventions in MND and offer potential directions for future research. Methods: A scoping review was carried ou

Coping strategies and perceived social support in fibromyalgia syndrome: Relationship with alexithymia.

Fibromyalgia (FM) is a chronic pain syndrome characterized by high levels of psychological distress and alexithymia, a personality disposition affecting emotional self-awareness. The main aim of the present study was to investigate for the first time the relationship between alexithymia and coping strategies on the one hand, and alexithymia and perceived social support on the other, in a sample of FM patients. To reach this aim, 153 FM patients completed a battery of tests assessing coping strategies, perceived social support, alexithymia, psychological distress and pain intensity. Four regres

Psoriasis: 'the badge of shame'. A case report of a psychological intervention to reduce and potentially clear chronic skin disease.

The psychological effects of skin disorders have long been established. Most research on psychological interventions for people with skin disorders has focused predominantly on cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT); however, CBT is not appropriate for everyone. We assessed the benefits of a psychological intervention, using the principles of systemic family therapy (SFT). The key to SFT is the understanding of problems in the context of family and social relationships, and how reciprocal dynamics influence problems. Problems thus have a dual construction; they do not exist only within individual

Rehabilitation practices of Turkish physiotherapists following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction: an online survey.

We aimed to investigate the anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACL-R) rehabilitation and return-to-sport (RTS) practices of Turkish physiotherapists. An online survey with 25 questions on ACL-R rehabilitation and RTS practices was created on Google Forms and distributed to physiotherapists via social media. Two-hundred sixty-four physiotherapists' responses were analysed. About 62.3% of therapists treated patients prior to ACL-R. Open-kinetic-chain (OKC) exercises frequently started at 4-6 weeks post-operatively (34.8%). Return-to-running cleared at 3-4 months (37%) and RTS cleared at

Variations of work engagement and psychological distress based on three working modalities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the rapid spread of the SARS-CoV-2 virus became a global health threat affecting people's mental and physical health, as well as working conditions and modalities. The reorganization of the work environment also affected work engagement and psychological distress levels. This manuscript assesses how work engagement and distress vary according to gender and age across three working modalities. We used a voluntary response sampling strategy to collect data on psychological distress and work engagement between August 2021 and January 2022. Results are from

Pain here and now: physical pain impairs transcendence of psychological distance.

BACKGROUND: The ability to traverse psychological distance by going beyond the experienced reality of the self, here and now, is fundamental for effective human functioning. Yet, little is known about how physical pain affects transcendence of psychological distance. Using a construal level theory framework of psychological distance, the current research examines the hypothesis that pain impairs people's ability to traverse any kind of psychological distance whether it be temporal, social, and spatial distance, or the hypothetical. METHODS: Using the cold pressor test, 151 participants partic

Chronic Stress, Diabetes, and Cardiovascular Disease: Epidemiologic Evidence, Pathogenetic Insights, and Therapeutic Strategies.

Chronic stress has been shown in cross-sectional as well as longitudinal studies to be strongly associated with diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). These studies have used various methods of stress assessment. Proposed pathogenetic mechanisms linking psychological distress with diabetes and CVD are complex and include stimulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis with excess cortisol release, as well as stimulation of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system, resulting in elevated blood pressure, in addition to an altered immune system, increased inflammation, an

Combining Pharmacological and Psychological Treatments for Binge Eating Disorder: Current Status, Limitations, and Future Directions.

Binge eating disorder (BED) is characterized by recurrent binge eating and marked distress about binge eating without the extreme compensatory behaviors for weight control that characterize other eating disorders. BED is prevalent, associated strongly with obesity, and is associated with heightened levels of psychological, psychiatric, and medical concerns. This article provides an overview of randomized controlled treatments for combined psychological and pharmacological treatment of BED to inform current clinical practice and future treatment research. In contrast to the prevalence and signi

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser syndrome: sexuality, psychological effects, and quality of life.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Küster-Hauser (MRKH) syndrome is a congenital condition in which a genetic female is born with vaginal agenesis and a rudimentary to absent uterus. This condition affects a woman's ability to menstruate, to engage in penile-vaginal intercourse, and to bear children. Much has been published about how best to create a neovagina in women with MRKH, but little has been written about the psychological impact of MRKH and quality of life outcomes for women with the condition. A review of the extant literature published from 1955 to 2007 supports that (1) surgical or non-surgical crea
