Is three-dimensional-printed custom-made ultra-short stem with a porous structure an acceptable reconstructive alternative in peri-knee metaphysis for the tumorous bone defect?

BACKGROUND: Long-lasting reconstruction after extensive resection involving peri-knee metaphysis is a challenging problem in orthopedic oncology. Various reconstruction methods have been proposed, but they are characterized by a high complication rate. The purposes of this study were to (1) assess osseointegration at the bone implant interface and correlated incidence of aseptic loosening; (2) identify complications including infection, endoprosthesis fracture, periprosthetic fracture, leg length discrepancy, and wound healing problem in this case series; and (3) evaluate the short-term functi

Bone Tissue Engineering in the Growing Calvaria Using Dipyridamole-Coated, Three-Dimensionally-Printed Bioceramic Scaffolds: Construct Optimization and Effects on Cranial Suture Patency.

BACKGROUND: Three-dimensionally-printed bioceramic scaffolds composed of β-tricalcium phosphate delivering the osteogenic agent dipyridamole can heal critically sized calvarial defects in skeletally mature translational models. However, this construct has yet to be applied to growing craniofacial models. In this study, the authors implanted three-dimensionally-printed bioceramic/dipyridamole scaffolds in a growing calvaria animal model and evaluated bone growth as a function of geometric scaffold design and dipyridamole concentration. Potential adverse effects on the growing suture were also e

Accelerated Bone Regeneration via Three-Dimensional Cell-Printed Constructs Containing Human Nasal Turbinate-Derived Stem Cells as a Clinically Applicable Therapy.

Stem cell transplantation is a promising therapeutic strategy that includes both cell therapy and tissue engineering for the treatment of many regenerative diseases; however, the efficacy and safety of stem cell therapy depend on the cell type used in therapeutic and translational applications. In this study, we validated the hypothesis that human nasal turbinate-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hTMSCs) are a potential therapeutic source of adult stem cells for clinical use in bone tissue engineering using three-dimensional (3D) cell-printing technology. hTMSCs were cultured and evaluated for c

Three-dimensional printed haptic model from a prenatal surface-rendered oropalatal sonographic view: a new tool in the surgical planning of cleft lip/palate.

Three-dimensional (3D) ultrasound has significantly improved prenatal screening and perinatal care in the area of cleft lip/palate and other deformities, providing essential preoperative information to the surgical team. However, current 3D reconstruction modalities are limited primarily to display on a two-dimensional surface. In contrast, a 3D printed haptic model allows both the surgeon and the parents to develop a better understanding of the anatomy and the surgical procedure through the ability to interact directly with the printed model. The production of a 3D printed haptic model of cle

Three-dimensional printed zerovalent iron enables selective and sustained reductive dehalogenation of florfenicol via structure-induced corrosion resistance and electron transfer regulation.

Zero-valent iron (Fe0) is widely applied for reductive dehalogenation but is limited by inefficient electron utilization and rapid corrosion in aqueous environments. Herein, 3D printing was employed to engineer the structural and interfacial properties of Fe0 for enhanced reductive transformation of florfenicol (FLO) under anoxic conditions. Compared with pristine Fe0 powders, the 3D-printed Fe0 (3DP-Fe0) exhibited a hierarchical porous architecture, lattice expansion, and enhanced hydrophobicity, which collectively regulated Fe0 corrosion behavior and interfacial electron transfer. These stru
