A prospective study in 80 exfoliative dermatitis patients over a period of 5 years establishes 41.9 years as its mean age at onset. The disease affected both males and females, with a preponderance of the former. The clinical features were identical, irrespective of the etiology. In a prospective study of 29 hospital inpatients with candiduria, yeasts were frequently isolated from the urine in the absence of symptoms and no serious deep fungal infection occurred. The prevalence of diabetes mellitus and urinary catheterisation was significantly increased in this group compared to the general hospital population. There was a high incidence of yeast species other than Candida albicans in the urine, non-albicans species constituting 39% compared with 18% from other sites (p less than 0.01).

During a five-year period, 262 (4.7%) of 5,531 pregnant women had positive cervical cultures for Chlamydia trachomatis, and 131 of their infants were followed up prospectively to ascertain the outcome of chlamydial exposure during the birth process. In a prospective study of the etiology of pneumonia in patients hospitalized at a university hospital, all respiratory secretions were tested for routine pathogens as well as Legionella. A diagnosis was established in 60 of 87 patients studied. Of the 37 nosocomial infections, six were caused by L micdadei. Fifty patients with medically refractory gastro-oesophageal reflux were treated by the insertion of an Angelchik anti-reflux prosthesis. All patients had a pre-operative upper gastrointestinal endoscopy, 32 were investigated with 15 h overnight oesophageal pH studies combined with oesophageal bile sampling and 20 underwent oesophageal manometric studies. During the past 4 years 196 patients with the idiopathic long QT syndrome were enrolled in a prospective international study conducted to obtain a better understanding of the clinical course of this unusual repolarization disorder. The complications of central venous catheters used for immediate postoperative nutrition and monitoring were evaluated in 120 patients. Two patients had to be excluded due to an irregular protocol. 149 central venous catheters were placed in the remaining 118 patients. A prospective study on congenital cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection was carried out in Sapporo, Japan. Only 77 (6.2%) of 1233 pregnant women were seronegative in the first trimester. In such a highly immune population, 11 (0.5%) of 2070 newborn infants were found to have congenital CMV infection. 112 patients with traumatic hyphaema were investigated prospectively over a period of 3 years. 53 had conservative treatment and 59 tranexamic acid treatment. They were hospitalized, but fully mobilized. Both groups were given supplementary local therapy with glucocorticoids and mydriatics as well as monocular patching. Twenty-seven consecutive patients whose diagnoses were previously unestablished and who demonstrated baring of the circumlinear vessel underwent thorough ophthalmologic examinations. Evidence supporting optic nerve damage was found in 24 of these 27 patients.
