Oral and masticatory rehabilitation using osseointegrated dental implants after resective treatment of multicystic ameloblastoma in the lower jaw with a fibula graft.

Ameloblastoma is an aggressive odontogenic tumor which typically occurs between third and fourth decade of life that often needs resective approach. Immediate reconstruction may show better results. The treatment of multicystic ameloblastoma in the mandible being a rare case that occurred in the late second decade of life, which was surgically removed along with the affected teeth with safety margins, and the region was immediately reconstructed using a vascularized graft, removed from the fibula. Its integration, in combination with osseointegrated dental implants and fixed implant-supported

After the Fact: A Brief Educational Program on HIV Postexposure Prophylaxis for Female Detainees in a Local Jail.

In recent years, four conditions, siliconosis, Gulf War syndrome (GWS), macrophagic myofasciitis syndrome (MMF) and post-vaccination phenomena, were linked to a previous exposure to an adjuvant, suggesting a common denominator, and it has been proposed to incorporate comparable conditions under a common syndrome entitled Autoimmune/inflammatory Syndrome Induced by Adjuvants (ASIA). We report a case of a female who at the age of 11 years was diagnosed with Still's disease. At the age of 22 she underwent silicone breast implants and presented with a transient lupus-like syndrome. Then, at 25 yea

Investigation of Stresses Induced by Different Framework Materials in Implant-Supported Fixed Prosthesis Using Finite Element Analysis.

BACKGROUND: In the implant-prosthesis complex, material choice and prosthetic design directly affect stress distribution and load transmission. AIM: This study aimed to compare the effects of different prosthetic framework materials on stress distribution in implant-supported fixed prostheses, using titanium and zirconia abutments, through three-dimensional finite element stress analysis. METHODS: In this study, two titanium implants (4.1 mm × 10 mm) with one titanium and one zirconia abutment were modeled. Three-dimensional finite element models of implant-supported fixed prostheses were cr

Ceramic-on-polyethylene hip arthroplasty reduces the risk of postoperative periprosthetic joint infection.

Metal-on-polyethylene (MoP) total hip arthroplasty (THA) prostheses are known to release metal debris. Basic science studies suggest that metal implants induce a pro-inflammatory response that ultimately chemoattracts leukocytes including macrophages and neutrophils to the surgical site. This raises concern of higher risk of infection with these prostheses through the "trojan horse" mechanism by which neutrophils and macrophages transport intracellular pathogens from a remote site. This study compared the infection occurrence between MoP and ceramic-on-polyethylene (CoP) implants to determine

Lumbar arthrodesis infection by multi-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, successfully treated with implant retention and ceftazidime/avibactam.

There are increasingly more patients with prosthetic implants (orthopaedic prostheses, lumbar instruments, osteosynthesis material). In the last decade, infections caused by carbapenem resistant Enterobacteriaceae have increased (bacteriaemia, abscesses, urinary tract infections...) with great difficulty in treatment and important associated comorbidity. We present the first case of infection of a lumbar instrumentation by Klebsiella pneumoniae producing carbapenemase D, OXA-48 type, and successfully treated.

Anterior Hyperfunction by Mandibular Anterior Teeth: A Narrative Review.

"Combination syndrome", defined by Kelly in 1972, is a challenging condition observed in a patient with an edentulous maxilla and a partially edentulous mandible with only mandibular anterior teeth. "Anterior hyperfunction syndrome" is regarded as a synonym of combination syndrome and was first described in 1994. Although these terms have been well known, the definition of "anterior hyperfunction" has not been described yet. This narrative review focused on anterior hyperfunction and discussed the etiology and the clinical managements. An electronic bibliographic search for this literature rev

Reoperations after valvular heart surgery: indications and late results.

The incidence of reoperations after valvular heart surgery was higher after valve-preserving procedures and after valve replacement with biological prostheses than after implantation of mechanical prostheses. The indication for reoperation was elective in the vast majority of cases; usually it was due to progressive late deterioration of repaired valves or of tissue valves. Symptoms are not a sensitive indicator in timing the reintervention. Progression of clinical signs, radiological and ECG alterations and echocardiographic criteria must be followed closely once late deterioration has been d

Complications and revisions in anatomic and reverse short stem shoulder arthroplasty.

INTRODUCTION: One current trend in the field of shoulder arthroplasty is a design shift to shorter and metaphyseal fixed humeral stem components. The aim of this investigation is to analyze complications resulting in revision surgery after anatomic (ASA) and reverse (RSA) short stem arthroplasty. We hypothesize that complications are influenced by the type of prosthesis and indication for arthroplasty. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 279 short stem shoulder prostheses were implanted by the same surgeon (162 ASA; 117 RSA), and 223 of these prostheses were implanted as primary procedures; in

A Single-Center Study of a Resin Inlay Dental Implant-Fixed Prosthesis for Closing Proximal Contact Loss in 89 Patients Who Underwent 3-Year Follow-Up.

BACKGROUND Proximal contact loss (PCL) is very common between implant-fixed prostheses (IFPs) and adjacent teeth and leads to a high incidence of food impaction. Our aim was to determine if the mesio-distal adjustable (MDA) crown prostheses introduced in this study could easily establish new contacts intraorally without the intervention of prostheses retrieval. MATERIAL AND METHODS The MDA crown requires casting in the inlay framework at the proximal contact area. If PCL occurred, the resin in the inlay framework could be easily removed and refilled chairside. This single-center prospective st

[The role of endoprostheses in the scope of hand surgery. Endoprostheses vs. traditional surgical procedures].

Alloarthroplasty has largely replaced traditional procedures in arthrosis of hip and knee joints. In contrast the role of alloarthroplasty in comparison to traditional procedures in hand surgery has been uncertain. To evaluate this question every registered hand surgery department (n=307) in Germany received a questionnaire requesting information on number and type of implanted prostheses and traditional procedures concerning the wrist joint, distal radioulnar joint (DRUJ), first carpometacarpal joint (CMC), metacarpal phalangeal joint (MP), interphalangeal joint (PIP), and preferred character

Oral Lichenoid Lesion following Dental Implant Placement and Successful Management with Free Gingival Graft: A Case Report with 10-Year Follow-Up.

Titanium and metal alloys are widely used in implants, crowns, and bridges in implant dentistry owing to their biocompatibility. In this case report of a 45-year-old female patient, multiple implants were placed in five different sextants at different time points. Notably, oral lichenoid lesions (OLL) occurred in three sextants following implant placement, strongly suggesting that the dental implants or prostheses were the causative factors for OLL. The lesion was of the reticular type with erythematous surroundings and was symptomatic. Although several conservative treatments, including repea

Evolution of tibial fixation in total knee arthroplasty.

Cementless total knee arthroplasty (TKA) implants were designed as an alternative to cemented implants. They were touted to provide long-term fixation without the fear of cement debris particle generation and cement degradation resulting in late prosthetic loosening and failure. They were envisioned as a superior solution for TKA in younger patients. However, critical studies revealed a unique set of complications, which included poor fixation as evidenced by frequent occurrence of radiolucent lines, aseptic loosening, osteolysis, and patellar polyethylene dissociation from metal-backed cement

Radiographic evaluation of healing tissues of early-failing implants after therapy: a case report.

Aside from clinical evaluation, the interpretation of radiographic images is one of the most frequently applied diagnostic procedures in patients with oral implants. Radiology is an important part of treatment with tissue-integrated prostheses, both at the pre-operative stage to obtain full assessment of the bony host and at the post- operative stage to assess the clinical result. Radiographic examination of peri-implant tissues is an essential diagnostic prerequisite for the evaluation of success and failure of oral implants. A case of peri-implant radiolucency detected 3 months after surgica
