The association between psychological distress and alcohol consumption and physical activity: a population-based cohort study.

INTRODUCTION: The COVID-19 pandemic and infection control measures caused changes to daily life for most people. Heavy alcohol consumption and physical inactivity are two important behavioral risk factors for noncommunicable diseases worldwide. The COVID-19 pandemic, with its social distancing measures, home office policies, isolation, and quarantine requirements may have an impact on these factors. This three-wave longitudinal study aims to investigate if psychological distress and worries related to health and economy were associated with levels and changes in alcohol consumption and physica

[Psychological and psychopathological issues of conspiracy theories: From the COVID-19 health crisis to the existential crisis].

OBJECTIVES: Research on conspiracy theories (CT) has increased significantly in recent years. Studies come from various disciplines in the field of the humanities and social sciences. They show in particular that adherence to CT rebounds at every moment of "crisis". The health crisis we are experiencing is no exception: COVID-19 pandemic entails an "infodemic", according to Tedros Ghebreyesus, General Director of the World Health Organization. Indeed, we are witnessing the production, and international dissemination, of false informations, including conspiracy explanations of the coronavirus a

Effects of adaptive error-threshold practice on soccer instep kick learning.

This study examined the effects of contextual interference and algorithmic practice with 33% or 44% error thresholds on learning the soccer instep kick in novice participants. Seventy-one inexperienced students (18-25 years) were randomly assigned to Blocked, Random, algorithmic 33%, algorithmic 44%, or control groups. After pre-testing, practice involved 324 trials over two days from 5, 6, and 7 m distances. Algorithmic groups began with blocked practice and progressed to serial or random structures based on accuracy thresholds (≥ 67% for 33%; ≥ 56% for 44%). Blocked and random groups practic

The emerging SARS-CoV-2 pandemic is known to take a toll on both physical and mental health. We present a case of a patient with a first episode of severe depression with COVID-19-related psychotic features. A patient with no history of mental disorders was admitted to the Psychiatric Unit due to the symptoms of severe depressive episode with psychotic features. Progressive deterioration of his mental health, behavior and activity was observed in March of 2020. He was not infected nor exposed to infectious agents but presented delusions about being infected with SARS-CoV-2 and being a source o

Stigmatization toward People with Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, and Binge Eating Disorder: A Scoping Review.

Research about stigmatization in eating disorders (EDs) has highlighted stereotypes, prejudices, and discrimination against people with EDs, as well as their harmful effects on them, including self-stigma and a difficult recovery process. Whereas a recent review focused on the consequences of ED stigma, our work aimed to provide a broader synthesis of ED stigma, including its consequences, but also its content and distribution. More precisely, we focused on three EDs-namely, anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder. Based on a systematic search of four major databases in ps

"Now It's Just Old Habits and Misery"-Understanding the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic on People With Current or Life-Time Eating Disorders: A Qualitative Study.

Background: Many aspects of the Covid-19 pandemic may make living with or recovery from an eating disorder (ED) particularly challenging. Understanding the processes which underlie the psychological and behavioral responses of people with EDs during this time are key to ensure tailored support in these unprecedented circumstances. Methods: People with lifetime EDs (n = 32) were recruited through social media from May to June 2020 during a period of strict infection control measures in the United Kingdom (i.e., "lockdown," "social distancing"). They completed open-ended questions in an online a

Telegenetics use in presymptomatic genetic counselling: patient evaluations on satisfaction and quality of care.

In recent years, online counselling has been introduced in clinical genetics to increase patients' access to care and to reduce time and cost for both patients and professionals. Most telegenetics reports so far evaluated online oncogenetic counselling at remote health centres in regions with large travelling distances, generally showing positive patient outcomes. We think online counselling--including the use of supportive tools that are also available during in-person counseling--of presymptomatic patients in their homes can also be feasible and valuable for patients in relatively small regi

Multi-omic subtypes of Alzheimer's dementia are differentially associated with psychological traits.

IMPORTANCE: Psychological traits reflecting neuroticism, depressive symptoms, loneliness, and purpose in life are risk factors of AD dementia; however, the underlying biologic mechanisms of these associations remain largely unknown. OBJECTIVE: To examine whether one or more multi-omic brain molecular subtypes of AD is associated with neuroticism, depressive symptoms, loneliness, and/or purpose in life. DESIGN: Two cohort-based studies; Religious Orders Study (ROS) and Rush Memory and Aging Project (MAP), both ongoing longitudinal clinical pathological studies that began enrollment in 1994 an

Effects of a play-based approach on psychosocial variables in federated long- and middle-distance athletes.

INTRODUCTION: Considering the theory of self-determination and its relationship with human motivation and the play-based approach (PBA), a training program is implemented in young middle and long-distance running athletes with play activities (simple tasks with rules in a ludic mood). The objectives were (1) to analyze the effects of a PBA on the autonomy support interpersonal teaching style (ASITS) perceived by athletes, the psychological variables of satisfaction of basic psychological needs, motivation, enjoyment and intention to continue practicing athletics and depending on sex, and (2) k

Psychomotor speed as a predictor of functional status in older chronic heart failure (CHF) patients attending cardiac rehabilitation.

BACKGROUND: The association among psychological, neuropsychological dysfunctions and functional/clinical variables in Chronic Heart Failure (CHF) has been extensively addressed in literature. However, only a few studies investigated those associations in the older population. PURPOSE: To evaluate the psychological/neuropsychological profile of older CHF patients, to explore the interrelation with clinical/functional variables and to identify potential independent predictors of patients' functional status. METHODS: This study was conducted with a multi-center observational design. The followi

Psychosocial impacts, preventive behaviours, and concerns associated with the COVID-19 pandemic for pregnant and non-pregnant women: A matched analysis from the International iCARE Study.

BACKGROUND: The COVID-19 pandemic negatively affected physical and psychological health worldwide. Pregnant women were likely more vulnerable to mental health difficulties due to the significant social, psychological, and hormonal changes they experience. During the pandemic, higher rates of antenatal depression and anxiety were observed compared to pre-pandemic rates. Increased mental health symptoms in pregnancy have been associated with adverse outcomes for child development. Understanding pandemic-specific preventive behaviours (i.e., mask use, physical distancing) and concerns may also be

The Effects of the Lockdown during the COVID-19 Pandemic on Alcohol and Tobacco Consumption Behavior in Germany.

BACKGROUND: Similar to other countries, the government of Germany has implemented various restrictions of social life in March 2020 to slow the spread of COVID-19 pandemic. This results in millions of people being isolated for long periods, which may increase feelings of worry and anxiety. As the consumption of alcohol and tobacco is an often used dysfunctional strategy to cope with such feelings, these restrictions might cause an increase of consumption. Already at the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, the World Health Organization (WHO) warned that increased alcohol consumption during the

Bidirectional Links Between Social Rejection and Sleep.

OBJECTIVE: This set of studies examines the bidirectional links between social rejection and poor sleep, a ubiquitous and increasingly problematic health behavior. METHODS: In study 1, a multiday field experiment, 43 participants completed a neutral task just before sleep on night 1 and a social rejection task on night 2. Objective and subjective sleep, postrejection affect, and physiological responses were measured. In study 2, 338 participants reported typical sleep quality before coming to the laboratory where they received social rejection or social acceptance feedback from a stranger. Ph

Reduced empathic responses for sexually objectified women: An fMRI investigation.

Sexual objectification is a widespread phenomenon characterized by a focus on the individual's physical appearance over his/her mental state. This has been associated with negative social consequences, as objectified individuals are judged to be less human, competent, and moral. Moreover, behavioral responses toward the person change as a function of the degree of the perceived sexual objectification. In the present study, we investigated how behavioral and neural representations of other social pain are modulated by the degree of sexual objectification of the target. Using a within-subject fM

Determinants of authentic responses to medical student wellbeing surveys: An interpretive description study.

INTRODUCTION: Medical students develop higher rates of depression and burnout relative to similarly aged university graduates, suggesting that the medical school journey contributes to adverse mental health. Medical students prefer self-report surveys to characterize their wellbeing; however, enlisting authentic responses can be challenging. Our study sought to identify factors that impact medical student engagement and honesty when completing wellbeing surveys. METHODS: From June 2023 to September 2023, we conducted semi-structured interviews with 20 medical students at the University of Alb

The psychological ability to adopt recommended coping responses reduced infections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, a key question for researchers and authorities was to understand the psychological motivations that sustained public engagement in protective behavior such as physical distancing and hygienic protection. While feelings of threat were rampant during the pandemic, theories of health psychology have highlighted appraisals related to the ability to cope (e.g., the feeling of being able to adhere cost-effectively to government advice) and argued that coping appraisals are superior predictors of motivations to protect the self against risks. In this study, we conducted
